Gazzara was diagnosed with throat cancer or mouth cancer, and was successfully treated surgically, but ultimately succumbed to the disease. He worked steadily until the end of his life.

Is he the same Ben Gazzara who, in the 1990s, did the narration for the dinosaur series Paleoworld? Because, although also deep, the voice doesn't quite sound the same. Then again, it seems unlikely that there were 2 different men with that same name doing television around the same time.

@@tomc8617 Yes, Tom, Ben narrated the series paleo world. He had a great voice for narrating. He was a great guy. I met him several times. He was very intense in person. His presence was remarkable. @@sam_fujiyama - IMDB is wrong. He narrated the entire Season 1. Other people did Seasons 2 through 4. I have all 4 seasons on my PC and can confirm it. I just wasn't 100% sure it was the same Ben Gazzara. However, Peter Gazzara Sr, commented above that it was in fact his cousin.
