The First Lady of the American Screen, Bette Davis, earned the 1979 Best Actress Emmy Award (Prime Time, Limited Series or Special) for her work opposite Gena Rowlands, the Queen of Independent Cinema, in the outstanding made-for-TV classic "Strangers: The Story of A Mother And Daughter". Rarely been seen since its May 1979 broadcast, it marks a vital point in the career of Hollywood's greatest actress as it is one of the high points of Miss Davis's "Silver Age", when she played rich parts in some of the most acclaimed television productions of the mid-1970s through the early 1980s. Three decades after its broadcast and two decades after Bette's passing, "Strangers" remains a superb and resonant human drama, deservedly comparable to Ingmar Bergman's "Autumn Sonata" and James L. Brooks's "Terms of Endearment". I hope that my fellow Bette fans will continue to cherish one of her last great performances and films.

The sounds at the beginning are so evocative of that passing era. The kettle, that doorbell, the squeaky screendoor, the bus...

This is just like my mother. I didn't see her for the last 9 years of her life. She was the most tragic person I ever knew.

So many top actresses consider Bette Davis to have been the greatest of them all, including Meryl Streep and the great Gena Rowlands. I agree, and an Emmy well-deserved. But don't know how Gena wasn't even nominated. And don't know how Gena didn't win the Oscar for A Woman Under the Influence, one of the greatest performances ever. The Academy so rarely gets it right.

Gena Rowlands did ultimately live to receive an Oscar in the form of a lifetime achievement type of honor for her overall cannon of work in film.

This was filmed in Mendocino California. The house that Gena walks by before getting to her mothers house is my great grand parents house and my cousin is the lil blonde girl ringing the door bell. and we use to play in the house this is filmed in

I just love this pic! I think this is the BEST of Bette's later performances - I really wish this were on DVD - Better just gets better when paired with a strong Co-star, and Gena Rowlands? My God! Shes's amazing here - matches Bette step for step! I heard that this film was so highly praised it was released theatrically in Europe and did quite well there - no surprise. Gena and Bette together? Acting Heaven!

Two of our greatest actresses sharing the screen together. Amazing! Two nights ago, I watched A Woman Under the Influence for the first time, and I'm absolutely amazed at Gena Rowlands brilliant performance. It was the first film I've seen her as the lead character. Over the years, I've only seen her in supporting roles. After watching A.W.U.T.I, I'm instantly hooked to watch Gena's movies. A phenomenal actress! Its incredible be she didn't win the Oscar for A.W.U.T.I. I love Ellen Burstyn, but that Oscar belonged to Gena.

This was a great movie, Bette Davis and Gena Rowland were amazing in this film. Very sad and moving movie. Also Bette Davis and Jimmy Stewart first movie together, for the first time, The movie is called RIGHT OF WAY 1983, great movie, very 1980s, But a good Bette Davis movie. Then she did the movie WICKED STEPMOTHER 1989 and Her very last movie was WHALES OF AUGUST 1989 co-starring the first lady of Hollywood lillian Gish who was 96 years old at the time and did movies in the 1919s, 1920s, 1930s, and won an Oscar in the 1920s. In my opinion all great movies. Love watching Bette Davis movies an extraordinary women and the greatest actress ever.

There was Bette Davis and then everybody else. I love Gena Rowlands too but Miss Davis was in a class of her own. I recently watched A Pocket Full of Miracles, Now Voyager, and Mr. Skeffington and the list goes on and on Oh and The Little Foxes. Watch these movies and then comment.

Yes. though both films were set in New England ("Summer of '42" in Nantucket, not sure specifically where this one is set, but it's also clearly New England, given Rowlands' reference to her having come down from Boston on the bus), both were filmed in Mendocino, California.

why do all of these skip 4/10? Everyone has 3/10 then 5/10. Couldn't at least one person have included 4? Or maybe someone could just upload 4 only? I'll look for another film to watch. I don't care to watch this whole thing with a hole in the middle.

Once you understand that the mother is not going to unclench her teeth, the whole scene feels unreal and boring. The talent of the actresses is not in question, but the writing is terrible. Is that the unconscious reason why the director is not even mentioned in the blurb (alongside Bergman and Brooks)?

So bad at acting that she got an Emmy for this performance! Ridiculous comment! Bette Davis was one of the greatest actresses ever! And Ms Rowlands thought so too. Listen to her Oscar acceptance speech!
