How would you go about starting from scratch? Materials? Seems a whole lot cheaper just to buy one.. Fenwick paint jobs are superior, Can I achieve that finish or look?

You could ask the same question about fishing.... why go fishing, when you can go to the store and buy already caught and prepared fish?

What's a good blank for a beginner to build on that will still give you good performance

Jason Wells , The MHX line of blanks is great. I personally only use those and StCroix blanks. American tackle now has titanium guides , much cheaper than fuji. I built a MHX highmod with them for my brother. Good stuff.

I built a rod that's too heavy on the butt section due to a heavy duty reel seat, is there a way to lighten this section of the rod or balance the rod overall?

I have never caught my shirt or jacket etc. on my rod or reel handles or butt. I always fish naked. And I have no store bought depth gauge or temperature monitor either both are natural. LOL
