The revive still has somewhat of a general retro 70's aesthetic, like what the MG 2.0 did. Some people genuinely like the more minimalist look. I mean, if you really wanted surface details, why wouldn't you just go for an MG or RG? As for the complaints about the joints, joints are exposed in practically every gunpla, from HG to PG, which is fine because they're part of the design. Ironically, the kits where you can't easily make out the joints tend to be ones that utilize the fine build system, and their joints end up looking cheaper for it. Between the revive and the entry grade, the revive looks better in a standing pose while the EG looks kinda awkward. The EG looks much more dynamic when posed, which is probably how its proportions were designed. For a kit that runs under $10 and doesn't sacrifice much in terms of engineering or accessories, the better question is probably "Why wouldn't someone purchase a High Grade RX-78 Gundam (Revive) today?" It's the same price as the old HGUC RX-78-2 despite significant improvements and, like you said, (less than) half the price of its more premium HG counterparts.

I was actually going to make a comment of my own after watching this, but you beat me to the punch. The Entry Grade is “Entry” for a reason, as it only gives you the most absolute base experience of building model kits in general that is suitable at any age. However, the Revive gives you a greater taste of what it is to step into the line of High Grade as it is a much more well rounded welcoming mat and much more true expectation setter for what is an HG, the biggest and most popular line for the hobby.

In a nutshell - I bought the revive as my first kit about 2 years ago, and now there's a shelf of gunpla in my house with the usual stockade of Ver Ka and real grade. You clearly did the same. While it is lacking in a lot of areas, it took a couple of hours to put together, allowed me to cut my teeth and build confidence in basic building skills, looks well enough the part, and it's solid as a damn rock with no deficiencies. It's also one of my favorite when I want to play around or start messing about with some poses because its joints are rock solid and bendy. It's the best action figure I ever built. I love my RG RX-178 Mk II that I built shortly after I built the confidence from the Revive, but I don't mess with it for fear of loosening the joints. It's a statue that can be posed. The revive is my adult action figure, and yes I love it. And it was on the shelf for $10 at my local Target when I needed it, whereas the HG Origin costs $25 and I usually can't even find it online, let alone in a store (still to this day never have, despite having a nearby Bandai dealer). That said, my 2.0 RX-78-2 MG is still my favorite kit precisely because it looks exactly cut out of the anime, unlike my Revive, whose proportions are a little janky. The 2.0 MG is also balling on every cylinder - perfect inner frame, perfect accessories, perfect stability, and a beautiful core fighter right where it should be. And it has the best head sculpt bar none short of perhaps the MG Nu. Gorgeous. Another reason I like the Revive though - Unlike the Origin, it has the proper recessed chest vents. I will indeed buy The Origin version, but it's going to be because of my love of the manga. For the same reason, some day a G3 will occupy my shelf due to my love of the novel. The Gundam never should have had the primary color silly color scheme. Side note, The Origin movies flat out sucked. Read the manga, enjoy the gorgeous pastel watercolors from Yas, or go home. Yas is a beautiful panelist, a storied character designer, and a magnificent painter, yet I care not for his directing or writing. Tomino's writing, at its best, is the "secret sauce" to Kunio Okawara's flame grilled patty and Yasuhiko's attractive packaging. The Origin manga works because it's working from within the source material. Not so for his movies, in which he takes too much creative liberties and colors outside the lines. Also, the 3D animation is ghastly and vastly inferior to the hand drawn greats like F91, 0080 or Stardust. To see Yasuhiko at his best as an animator, F91 is where it's at. I'll take the colony infiltration scene in F91 over absolutely anything in The Origin, the best of which is the ship battles and nothing to do with MS combat anyway. As soon as the Zaku shows up, it ruins the beautiful choreography of ship combat. For point of comparison on the ridiculous argument about 3D animation being superior, I point you towards Hayao Miyazaki. Concede, and say uncle.
@JangoTheBlueFox3 жыл бұрын
I think what people mean when they talk about "animation accuracy" is actually accuracy to the original mechanical designs by the mobile suit's mechanical designer. in this case Kunio Okawara. and the Revive kit definitely matches that original artwork better than most other HG kits of the RX-78. I think you also knew this is what they meant but decided to take their comments at face value and make a dumb argument about it.

As someone who leans more toward the "I want it to look like the anime" side of the spectrum, I find that the MG RX-78 2.0 is essentially my ideal of what it means to produce a physical version of an animation design. And yes a lot of that just comes down to preference, but the low surface detail, even lower than the HG Revive, makes it feel as if it is a representation of the anime. I feel like we're in an era where Gunpla is dominated by RGs and Ver. Kas. And it makes sense, they tend to push the engineering to obscene degrees and are only improving. But I look at that RG Zeong, and can't get into it. With Okawara's OYW designs especially, I really feel like less is more where surface detail is concerned.

This is the perfect time for me to do a friendly reminder on how Comic-Walker has The Origin Manga for free on their website, on full color, for anyone who got left wanting more from what The Origin Had to offer and didn't knew about it (Yeah, that manga does cover the full 0079 story) Now about the video, I'm still left in the middle of my inner war for what HG RX-78' kitni should get, I got myself the old RG a couple of years ago and it's started to die recently, getting loose, losing parts. So I've been thinking what should I be getting to take the mantle of "Obligatory Granddady Gundam Kit in your shelf" I was in-between the Revive and the Origin, now we recently got the Entry Grade and made stuff even more hard, this was a great video, it got me some more insight cues for what I should takes notes on for my next purchase, I thank you for that.

The Origin has existed for a while now- only the OVA is fairly recent... as opposed to a certain "radical redesign" that came out about a year ago...

Personally,I enjoy the revive for quite a few reasons,like how the proportions are elongated,but not to the point of the Beyond Global,and stocky,but not to the point of ol' circle-headed Origin Rx 78-02 Now,the revive is the simplest,cheapest (for its time),and most beginner friendly (once again,for its time)and most,if not all of these perks are held up in the much cheaper Entry Grade,which is overall the best "anime accurate" design,which,I think just means that the proportions look more human and natural,and the design isn't over the top or panel lined to the extreme

@OtonashiV3 жыл бұрын
The entry grade trades the v-fin part separation for no yellow on the rifle's scope and no beam effects. The revive has clear yellow eyes, which is kinda neat. In a standing pose, the revive looks much better, while the entry grade looks more dynamic when posed. Although it doesn't have polycaps, the EG's c-clip joints can easily loosen up, and in some cases are loose out of box. It also features more hollow parts in the joints and gaps between parts. It's not strictly better, though it is a fantastic kit for the money. However, the price difference of 300 yen between it and the revive isn't that great considering the bazooka and beams the revive gets you. You're practically paying the same price for the base suit.
