I've made models a lot as a child and the thing that absolutely astonished me about Gunpla is how extremely cheap it is and the quality. For sometimes less than a 4th of what a standard Western military kit or something more expensive like Warhammer you get a kit that is pre-colored, has amazing detail almost always including clear parts and stickers, and can actually move and hold it's pose. And they're pretty simple to assemble. It's amazing and compared to all other models it's almost unbelievable that they can do this, it has opened up model making for me again in a new way since I have less time and energy than I did as a kid and I also need my money for other things now. It's kinda hard to go back to regular kits now that my eyes have been opened by Gunpla.

I confess: As a kid I thought Gundam was the greatest s***. So I watched both seasons of IBO last year, at the age of 35. I was such an idiot. Now I own 10+ Gunpla kits and build them regularly, even with my kids, having so much fun and enjoying the hobby. I'm even playing them as miniatures in Andrea Sfiligoi's "Samurai Robots Battle Royale" (which works pretty well and pretty near to the anime, btw.). So so glad that I changed my mind. By trying it out and leaving my prejudices behind. I'm starting to watch IBO again, but with my wife... and she thought Gundam was the greatest s***, seeing me building up all these kids toys... We have finished the 4th episode by now and she asks so many questions about the characters... and she seems to like it. That feels so great, haha. So so glad that she changes her mind. By trying it out and leaving her prejudices behind.

My story of being an idiot. I have already watched several Gundam series when SEED came out. Now, it has it's fair share of flaws. But the opening scene, when the pod drops and GINNs come out of it, in my opinion, is one of the most beautifully animated sequences in Gundam. Pitty, the rest of SEED wasn't on the same level of quality. Anyway, GINN was the very first MS that made me think "gee, i wonder if there is a model of it?" Over 13 years later i have over 50 Gunpla (never bothered to count) and i think i possibly probably might have an addiction.

The film trilogy remove a lot of the silly moments and toy commercial episodes that don't fir in a serious war drama and makes the pacing faster, but it also removes some character development and even entire popular characters. There's a lot of debate on watching the series vs the movies. I'd say give the first few episodes of the series a chance, but if you find the pacing too slow or just don't like it, then drop it and try the movies instead.

One thing this video doesn't mention is that another thing that allowed the series to get back on the air is the female fanbase. The original airing of Gundam wasn't very popular with kids, but it became popular with adult women in the reruns, and those fans had enough interest to keep the series going in the gap between the clover toys and the new bandai toys, and those bandai toys got kids interested. It was those two things together that led to Zeta Gundam.

FA-78 Full Armor Gundam and MS-06R Psycho Zaku will always have a special place in my heart. They're my favorite example of how Mobile Suits aren't just scaled-up infantrymen with fancy paintjobs. They're weapons of war that we're going to strap as many weapons onto as possible.

My all time favorite is the God Gundam(aka Burning Gundam) Mobile Fighter G Gundam is the best series imo ❤

God. I disagree with you so hard on so many fronts. But I'll respect your opinion as a Gundam 'fan'. From, U.C fan. Legit though G-Gundam is my least favourite Gundam series. But it's fun to laugh at.

@@ForgedHorizons Lol I understand the frustration, G Gundam isnt exactly the most 'hailed' series in the franchise lol but while I love the war and drama aspects of Gundam, I've always been drawn more to the "tournament fighter" style Gundam series like G and Build Fighters, but a lot of my gunpla are actually from series like Zeta and Wing(which I also love) lol I also respect your opinion as a fan to not like G Gundam, but in the end, cmon guys, they're just toys x)

God I love that series so much! I’m glad I’m not alone!
I was going to comic shops in the early and late '90s buying gundam and macross model kits. I remember when wing came out in the states and was able to buy gunpla in toys r us and building became normal. I was so happy and had a ton of kits people had never seen until years after.

This was spot on. I got the itch to build again while watching Iron Blooded Orphans. Although I had built some when I was younger from Gundam Wing and G Gundam, it had been a long time. Putting together Barbatos all these years later was very enjoyable.

Thank you for the video. I've been wanting to put one of these together but I missed this wave in the 80s for several reasons. You did a great job of explaining the basics of this hobby and gave great references to other resources.

I never saw ads for Gunpla when I was a kid. I think I was in a Michael's craft store and looking at the model cars and I saw this badass looking mech model. I had no idea what it was from but after building that first one I was hooked! I started watching the Anime and begging my mom for the Master Grade kits.

This video was recommended to me in June 2019. I had no idea what Gunpla was before this video. Since then I've built over 20 kits including at least one of each scale and grade and just finished my first ever Perfect Grade, The Perfect Strike Gundam. Thanks Crunchyroll for giving me my new hobby. Also curse you for making me spend all my money :p

I remember my dad coming home from the Philippines and he happened to have the RG Wing Gundam EW, and he gave ME the task to build it, my brother was also given the task but he obviously wasn’t gonna do it. I of course built it and that was probably one of the best things I’ve ever accomplished, completing my first ever Gundam model/Gunpla. What’s funny is that it was my mom who told my dad to get the kit, and my mom knows about Gundam, mainly because she is from the Gundam Wing generation. She told me all about her knowledge about Gundams and even showed me a couple episodes of Gundam Wing while she was rewatching the show. That did nothing but strengthen my passion for Gunpla. Here I am with about 30 or so Gunpla kits in my collection, all thanks to my parents.
