Well done for persevering, proper man in a shed engineering and doing your best with what you have. It made this old retired precision engineer laugh and cry in equal measure🤣😭 But as always the speeded up filing segment was a highlight, more please👍👍

aargh no hammer tapping this time, I'm sure it's on the cards soon though. I'm sure it was much better than the grinder attack that I had planned otherwise, or a hacksaw and a drill.... let's stop there actually🤪

Thanks very much Paul, that's great to hear. Never too late to mess around with new things, or old ones 🤪 I might have a look for a bigger lathe, it would be nice to make some little brass things and what-not. Thanks for your kind words, Glyn

I can highly recommend having a father in-law and all the old style bits of handy kit that come with them in their sheds!! I've found a chain saw which I haven't needed to use yet and an old tool that even he didn't recognise. It turned out to be a tool for setting the teeth on saws.

You need to set the height of the cutting edge on to the centreline of the rotating axis. Otherwise the tool will run rather than cut.
@Trev3507 ай бұрын
Thats the hardest brass I've ever seen. Normally a parting tool would go through brass like a hot knife through butter. And it normally comes off in small chips. That cut more like brass plated mild steel. But you got there in the end. The bike is looking great. Now then... You now have two discs on your dash. One brass the other chrome. So things match up, why not buy a tank badge off the signals version? Stick it over the Chrome badge and you will have a better match. Check out what Bruce 'coast rider Scotland' has done to his. That's what I'm suggesting. They are only a few quid from a royal Enfield dealer.
@GlynOC7 ай бұрын
Thanks Trev, that's interesting. I've never looked at the dash of a Signals closely, I'll have a look at what they've got. That brass is addictive 🤪 It is certainly strange brass but it succumbed in the end, it would have been the grinder if not!
@Trev3507 ай бұрын
@@GlynOC no, it's the petrol tank badge you want....and stick it on your dash! Check Bruce's bike.

Yep, something like that. 😅 Get the impression that lathe needs some TLC, including new bearings. Almost there.
@GlynOC7 ай бұрын
The poor little thing, it's got all rubber bands in the back, I'm surprised they lasted long enough but they're still available and a few other spare parts. I don't know what that Indian brass was alloyed with but it was hard as nails! At least it should last longer than the plastic version👍
@davericketts91017 ай бұрын
Never seen brass behave like that in a lathe. I know the lathe is virtually worn out and it`s hard to see from the camera angle but it seems the tool was too high and rubbing the brass away instead of cutting it, particularly the parting tool you first used.
@GlynOC7 ай бұрын
Yes, it was hard as nails, much harder than I expected, lord knows what that alloy was or maybe the surface had work hardened when the knurled part was done, the middle wasn't so bad. The tools were centred but the angle was a bit odd wasn't it👍

Hi Glynn I've messaged you a few times before, but I would appreciate your assistance if you dont mind.Im a tight Yorkshire man ! I'm busting to get a Halcyon Re the cam fitting: _ the crank lock tool? I cant bring myself to pay for the tool when I've got a lathe! I dont know if you can measure the two diameters on the locking pin with any accuracy? Say 0.025mm will be good enough If yes pls could you tell me the diameters and the length of each section? As reward _ I'll make you one and send you it. Once ive got that, I can make the cam iocking tool. Regards Mike N
@GlynOC6 ай бұрын
Hi Michael, sorry for the delay. I've been trying to find my vernier for measuring it but just can't find it so can't accurately measure. I think you could do it with a drill bit fitted in the crank (blind hole) and just make sure it's kept concentric with the outer hole. As for the top, another drill bit in the camshaft hold and making sure it's vertical relative to the head face would sort you too 👍
@michaelnicholson52186 ай бұрын
@@GlynOC Thanks Glyn, No problem regarding the sizes etc, I'm retire,d, so I've time on my hands! I'm fairly sure the crank hole is 8mm, I'm guessing the case hole is about 10mm. As these are mass produced engines, the TDC will not be that accurate, as will the cam position. If you were to add up all the tolerances, it's not going to be smack on. When I get my halcyon I will make the drawings for the crank pin and valve tool available, Keep up the good work ! Best Regards Mike N
@kelco22467 ай бұрын
that was brutal to watch , learn about tool centre height
@GlynOC6 ай бұрын
It didn't sound any better either! The main tools had a good centre level but those parting tools weren't meant for it I don't think and didn't have any adjustment, I could have used some pennies to tilt it up though I guess!
@GerryMullin-io5qv6 ай бұрын
Keep at it and you will get the hang of it maby use 8mm tools ,we all have to learn.
