Thanks so much for such a quality video here, earned a sub. Great video. It really helped me be prepared for this difficult repair. I was working on a 2013 equinox awd. Had a lot of trouble with the bottom converter bracket. It took a 15mm crows foot, 24 inch extension, and a lot of patience.
@tritech Жыл бұрын
Just got that same bracket off after fighting with it for days. Started with a 12 point socket and rounded off the 13mm. Then tried a 6 point on an impact and rounded it off. Tried rounded socket extractors in 13 and rounded it more. Tried filing flats on it to get it to 12mm and gave up and started to use an osciscillating tool to cut the head off. Blade dulled and before running out to get another I tried pounding on a 12mm extractor socket and it finally came loose. No idea why that bracket bolt was so tight, everything else, even the rusty cat bolts came out fine.

I had a jumped timing chain on my 2.2 L61 Z22YH in my 2007 Holden/Opel Astra a few years back, so I thought I might as well do the lot, both chains, guides, tensions, waterpump, thermostat, seals , oil pump impeller, as I did not want to do many small repairs in the future. The old water pump - which was fine - had a plastic impeller they have bad rep, the new one is metal. The car was about 12 years old at the time an the service history was lacking, so I made the assumption the guy I brought it from had not really taken care of it. I also replaced all cooling hoses, fuel lines and others. I used all OEM parts. So far so good.

An engineering design where you have to remove engine mounts and capture the timing to replace a water pump? No, just no. Excellent video but I'm sure GM doesn't want the consumer to know about this. Thanks for warning us about this headache.

If you're really worried about bolts dropping in the timing cover you could always make the hole bigger on the water pump sprocket holder, slide a piece of pipe into it that goes right over the sprocket bolt, then insert the socket into the pipe. Bolt will slide right out the pipe and not into the engine.

Nice work on this one Brian. The only other water pump replacement & repair nightmare that's worse than this one can be found on the Ford V-6 they put in the Edge & other Ford products. There's no way to tell if the water pump is leaking in the Ford because the pump weeps the coolant directly into the crankcase. The transversely mounted engine configuration complicates damn near every repair. In some cases it's necessary to drop the entire engine out the bottom to gain access to the timing chain. Total crap!!
@markleggett39443 ай бұрын
It is almost as if Ford figured that they could sell a lot more engines by designing a leaking water pump to destroy the bearings in the engine. They realize that 90% of people never open the hoods on their cars and would drive them until they stop. No decent engineer would ever think this was a good idea.

I HATE HATE HATE these crap boxes. I've never had a vehicle kick me in the nuts so many times despite absolute to-the-tee maintenance since purchased new. Our 2012 Malibu has needed in all its 70,000 mile life: a complete timing overhaul, an exhaust manifold, an exhaust flex joint, a rear brake caliper rebuild, an emergency brake pedal assembly, a front wheel bearing, two power mirror switches, two front door speakers, a trunk release button, and a rear defroster tab repair. If I wasn't doing all my own work, the repairs would have exceeded the value of the car twice over. GM corporate sucks. No help whatsoever, just a "sorry, go fork over a couple thousand to your local dealer."

It burns 4 quarts of oil between oil changes. Had to have the windshield wiper linkage repaired 3 times. because the linkage came apart. What where these engineers thinking when they engineered this engine? They had to have been drunk.

The only thing I figured out that might help someone else along the way as if you put those timing chain screws into a socket and put a piece of electrical tape over the top of it and hold it on the sides The screw wont come out and you can screw it halfway to the timing chain and then pull on the electric tape and it will rip. I tried it your way it scared the hell out of me I almost dropped a bolt into the timing area. Also did you know that that tool you only want to screw a few threads into the timing chain sprocket. if you go too far you'll go into the water pump and then your water pump can't be removed without loosening those screws. Some other obstacles I came across just thought you might like to know!

i just pulled my 2.4, thru the top, in no time at all. i had a timing chain issue, metal shavings, all the good stuff blah blah. NO SPECIALTY TOOLS OR LIFT REQUIRED FOR ANYTHING. i own the manual and lets just say they are proper. interference engine.... absolutely. first i pulled the head, like butter, no fancy tools, forget timing shit we r talking one bicycle chain with 3 super obvious marks. keep it moving, it all looked acceptable, i got a new timing chain kit and head gasket for it. there are 2 chains one turns balance shafts and the water pump the other new slides guides and tensioner. back together with the old tty bolts... it fired right up.......nasty knock metal to metal wtf no check engine no misfire no issues.....next the rpm guage quits engine stalls......no start.....pulled the crankshaft sensor,runs like a champ no rpm though....start it a hundred times no shit... it starts one day shuts off,to never crank again.....no time for drama i pulled the plugs after i couldnt even turn it with a wrench 4 plug flattened by force.....result after pulling head AGAIN? piston literally exploded......i know im just a guy talking but if u have an interference engine and it fails, throw it away and get one that hasnt jumped yet! again JUNK! many good reusable parts to keep but dont roll the dice. moral yes by the book is best, but u need no specialty tools for this job u dont need a lift this engine easily comes out the top and if u r doin a water pump why not time this engine? scratch that specialty tool and all those hard to reach fancy swivel tools and pliers and literally bs steps. if the water pump went u r already rollin the dice with this engine,plus its so easy to just fix it u save but spend on things u need like tty bolts head gasket vvt solenoids cam phasers etc.....DO NOT BUY THINGS TO BE PROPER,and if ur water pump is driven by the timing chain why wait? GREAT VIDEO, VERY PROPER, THANK YOU FOR THE TIME U SPENT TO TAKE THOSE STEPS.

Generally they are there as brown powder, not seen any that went in, more were dropped on the road as chunks when that pump seized. changed Ford ones at the roadside, went out and seized 12km from town, drove in gently and stopped at the garage at 20 to 6. Went to the spares place right there, after going across the road to FORD, and they had one at the other branch. Arrived 5 past 6, and we compared the new "second source" to the one in there, and fitted it there and then at the garage. They asked where the car was, and we told them it was the red one by the pump. He said he never saw anybody get those water pumps out so fast. Experience, plus my friend is a qualified mechanic, and we have done a few water pumps, plus more engine overhauls, on that particular model engine, seeing as it was a package engine for machinery where we were.

Probably, however, there is the advantage of having a water pump that will continue to function even in the event of a belt failure. The one thing you said I didn't want to happen, happened (eye-roll). I had someone doing the work following your instructions when he got ahead of himself despite my objection. I was trying to tell him he was skipping a step (By not using the magnet tool) when... Bam! It happened he dropped a bolt inside. I was livid, to say the least. Can you recommend a video or webpage that will instruct me on how to get that bolt out? PLZ & thaNx!

Best thing to do is pull the timing cover without moving the engine. This video has a good engine out explanation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJm2lKKXbJqkbaM Best of luck!

The catalytic converter wasn't in the way ?

There is another special tool that fills the opening so the bolts can't fall in to the engine.

Dang did ya have to put the word extraction in your video? Sorry i cracked a crown and got an infection so they had to, dare I say it, extract the rest of the tooth. Almost died, but that's a story for another day back to the video. Never underestimate the power of a well used mirror to find hidden bolts. Love the bonus footage.

Why you didn't take the top cover to give you space to take the water pump out 🤷🏻♂️
