I watched both part 1 & 2 to the end and I don't even need to change a water pump right now, but I own two of these Ecotec's. I appreciate the detail, tips and humor, and I know how much work it takes to edit, "render", upload, publish, etc. Thanks

I'm working with a 2012 chevy malibu and there is a hidden bolt behind the water pump near the exhaust, how do I remove that?
@loganwork7024
@loganwork7024 7 ай бұрын
@hizkie8238 I know I'm too late, but maybe it will help someone. Service manual says to remove exhaust manifold, but you dont have to. I got a 1/4" flex head ratchet with a short 10mm in from under the car. There isn't much room to turn it out by ratchet, I had to put the socket on and use my hand. I also have the fender cover and oil pan off, so that might have helped me. Good luck!

Generally I am not afraid to tackle a repair unless we get into pulling engines or something. Also, I am not a pro, I am a mechanic out of necessity! My son has a 2010 Cobalt and it appears that the water pump has failed. I have spent a lot of time researching the replacement of the the pump and to be honest it has me a little frightened. To this point, your two-part video is calming my fears. Thank you for taking the time to explain the details and especially the magnet to bolt tip. If anyone is going to drop a bolt into a timing casing, it's going to be me! So Thank You for that, I am ordering the magnet tool in the link right now!!!

Hey Brian, when I do these I take a 6x1.0 bolt and cut the head off of it and thread it into the drive pulley on the pump, that way I have a stud to line it up with the gear.. then you don't have to fight it trying to line up the bolt holes from the gear to the pump. Also, instead of trying to use a magnet held against your socket take a tiny piece of paper and set it in the side of your socket and push the bolt in, the paper will cause a tight enough fit to hold your bolt in the socket and then you can thread the bolts in that way. Hope that helps.

Just got into one on an equinox tonight after watching this video. One big set back that I came across that you dont have to worry about is the engine block heater goes directly behind the water pump! And its really in the way! Also seems to be alot less room around the 2.4 in the equinox. So far not a bad job if i can avoid pulling the exhaust manifold. Thanks for the tips. Sure makes it a hell of alot easier!

Took me 2 days to complete this job because I dropped a bolt in the timing cover. Took the oil pan off wasn't in there so finished taking out the water pump where I was able to fish it out with a magnet. I consider myself mechanically inclined but this is by far the hardest job I've ever done and ive replaced whole engines and transmissions. If anyone on here is thinking about buying a Malibu or equinox with the 2.4 don't do it and if you do take it to someone else to be serviced. They'll hate it too but it will save you the headache.

Some shops will quote sky high prices to do a job like this! They actually hope the customer will take the job elsewhere. If the customer decides to stay with them then they make a lot of money still taking the risks of a miserable job! I really can’t blame them. Anytime a shop takes on a miserable job that is time intensive they likely have to turn away other more profitable jobs!

Great video parts 1 and 2 thanks to your knowledge and telling me about that special g.m. timing tool I got grandpas new waterpump in for a fraction of what anyone would've done it for. Sucked putting the new one in I ended up having to pass it from the under driver side over the exhaust over the frame then stuck it in from the bottom. Guess theres a 1000 ways to skin a pig! Thanks my guy!

It's retarded. I showed the lady my car, 07 town car. See the alternator? Under that is water pump. A handful of bolts, and fill with coolant and put 2 alternator bolts back in and I'm done in 30 min flat. Your Malibu takes me 30 min just to get the damn tool like this blue 1 in cause not enuff room, right beside the front support, can't jack up engine for the way it's made. It's Insanity. Only worse 1 was 3.5 ecoboost. 10.5 hours, and while I'm there it had Ober 100k, Ford says do timing set while there. I don't think I'll ever do another ecoboost unless it's mine. No more GM like this. Wtf GM???

Hey Brian, Could have sworn that I was subscribed to you, a few years ago, I could have sworn!!!! Anyways, I hit the sub button AGAIN! I purchased a 07 G5 2.2 vin-F & lucky me, This car has every problem a G5 can have & some!!! It was running when I approached at the lot so, The tapping at start up was hidden from me! When I realized the issue, I rushed & ordered a timing tensioner & THANK GOD I HAD MY LITTLE EXTENDABLE, ANTENNA STYLE MAGNET WITHIN REACH Because, As I unscrewed the 32mm socket, IT ALL CAME APART INTO PIECES & Thankfully I had the magnet ready! I just ordered a dr.engine timing set $124.88-133.93 after tax, from ebay! It comes with a new oil pump/front engine cover, water pump, both timing chains, 3 tensioners, oiler, & all the guides, 2 cam gears, 8 bolts(new cam bolts, & guide bolts, along with a front engine cover gasket. My water pump works fine so, I am debating on whether to change it & the biggest thing is, My cooling fan DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY ON ITS OWN! I extended all my know how & don't know how to fix it but, when I probed one of the pegs in the fuse box for the cooling fan relay, (test light attached to ground) When I touched 1 peg, the fan came on! I went to the junk yard & got another relay & that did not help! So, I connected to that peg in the fuse panel, ran to a toggle inside the car & then to ground so, When I hit the toggle, the fan comes on! The temp usually bounces between 183-189 but, If I am stuck in traffic or going up a massive hill at low speed, I have seen 210-212 degree-SCARY!!!! The fan spins when I activate it but, I am a loss as to why it does not function properly? So, I am scared to open up the cooling system & risk any air bubble's! I do not have a cooling system vacuum tool or any fancy cooling system tools! besides a squeeze clamp tool.. anyways, I worry about summer time temps & just how to get my cooling system working properly but, I ordered a timing kit & soon, I will be installing it & getting to the root of the tapping noise at start up!!! Any suggestions on my cooling fan issue? it has a single fan yet, the fuse box has relays for cooling fan 1, & 2 with a 3rd spot for a fuse. The car had some front end damage in the past & i don't know if this fan is the correct fan or not? I also purchased a new crank bolt, & the two 0-rings for the coolant tube (90537379). Still need dexcool! Gasket maker & maybe a new thermostat gasket? Will a small sqeeze tube of gasket maker be enough for the timing job or do I need a full tube that fits into my caulking gun?

Ryan, I'm about to change water pump and thermostat on my 06 pontiac solstice 2.4L manual (fhe 2.4 is the non turbo base model but my car has a Hahns Turbo and Intercooler, with custom tune, and obviously original air box and air filter removed and replaced with an open conical filter attached to a long tube running from the intake obviously, and sits dead center over the fan shroud/between the turbo charge pipes. Not sure why I just told you that as it has nothing to do with my reason for commenting LOL My question to you is could you explain this rod method you stated? Thank you

When I was an apprentice many moons ago my Mentor taught me to use thick grease to hold bolts inside the socket for tight areas. Dip the head of the bolt into red grease cover it good then pop it into your socket. It won’t come out until it’s threaded into where it is supposed to go.

I was able to get the water pump holding tool on the timing sprocket without having to remove any of the timing sprocket bolts. I am really confused as to why you pulled them off, or even why you “turned the engine” to line up the holes to get the tool on. I was able to get it on without turning the engine at all. I understand there is a thin cover that goes over the timing sprocket that has 4 bolts, but it looks like you are taking off the bolts holding the sprocket in place

Great video brian. I was wondering if you had used the OTC 6616 holding tool. The bolts couldn't fall into the engine when they were removed.

You've done a great job on the water pump. But for the best results on O-rings I find that MOLYKOTE O-ring grease works best on any O-rings 😎

I have one for ya! On my 07 Pontiac G5 vin-F 2.2, The cooling fan does not operate! The fan spins when power & ground is applied. I thought maybe the relay was bad & replaced them but, That did not fix it! The temp displays on the dash so, I assume the temp sensor is okay? Since it was not operating, I removed the relay & taped into one pin & when I ground that pin, the fan comes on so, I ran a wire into the cab, to a toggle then to ground! I have a aftermarket fan controller but, the temp sensor is 3/8ths if I remember right...Any idea what size threads are on the factory temp sensor? I am wondering how I can run a aftermarket fan controller & still retain my temp display on the dash? Any suggestions???? Watched to the end!!! I enjoy watching & learning about the job that I am about to do! I watch them from beginning to end & watch as many video's as I can find regarding the issue of which I am about to tackle, To see what I am getting into! Looking for tips & tricks, & what to watch out for!!
