I cannot find my original comment from many months ago but I'd like to update my situation. I thought I had a parking switch bad in the motor. I replaced it but still had the same issues. I replaced the switch on the steering column and it didn't help. I just dealt with the wipers not parking, and not having intermittent abilities. I eventually found out that mice have been chewing through the wires under the fuse box. M7 insurance paid to have the wiring fixed, and wouldn't you know... the wipers worked as they should have. So the lesson here is that if all else fails, you might want to examine all your wiring in case there is rodent damage! Again, great video. Thank you for your help!

Just finished replacing my wiper motor and linkage, video helped a lot. I have the 4 cylinder caravan. Only two supports and 4 screws in the plastic. I could not get the wiper arms off by tapping or pounding, I bought a 3 arm puller for $20 and they just popped right off, a 2 arm would have been better because of the plastic. All works now.

Thank you! This series was just what I needed to get our '05 grand caravan back on the road quickly today :) passenger side wiper went limp after I tried to use the wipers, not knowing they were frozen. Turns out both arms were loose on the pivots, so they were in the process of stripping out the splines. Trying to use them while frozen just knocked out whatever was left of the passenger side splines. Thankfully because pivot shafts are tapered, I was able to just position the arm back where it belongs and tighten the nut down nice & snug. Working great now! Thanks again :)

My wipers made a funny noise, slowed down, then quit in the middle of a downpour in St Louis traffic. I'm thinking it's the wiper motor. Your video makes it seem so easy, but I don't have time to do it myself. How many hours do you think it would take a mechanic to fix this? I know the rate is different everywhere you go, but hours should be about the same right?

Morning Amanda. The labor hours show to be 1.5 hrs so I would think around $100-$150 in labor plus the needed parts. Thanks for asking and for watching the video. Make sure to subscribe.

My wipers do not return home after I turn them off. They stay right where they are when I turn the switch off. I've read that the "park switch" is most likely to blame, but I have also read that the switch is located in the wiper motor. Will replacing the wiper motor fix this problem?
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
Your correct, the park switch is located on the wiper motor. There is a very good chance it could be your issue.

MotorCity Mechanic Well. I finally replaced the window motor. This did not fix my problem. I took the multifuncion switch off and cleaned a lot of grease off the contacts but this did not work either. I ordered a new multifunction switch to see if it's bad. Will update after I replace it. Also: I can no longer return the wiper motor I bought because Advanced Auto will not accept opened and installed parts. This is their policy so I took an $80 loss on a motor I did not need. This isn't Advanced Auto's fault. It is mine for not trouble shooting well. I'm saying this so anybody doing this project can save a few bucks by doing proper troubleshooting and not purchasing something and not being able to return it.

My driver side wiper works fine. No noise. The passenger side works once in a while. Do you think it's the wiper motor? If so, how much would something like that cost to have done at the shop? ballpark?
@MotorCityMechanic9 жыл бұрын
+MrAtrain98 Afternoon, the front wipers work off of one motor....if there is an issue with one side then the linkage has an issue or the wiper arm on that side has a loose nut attaching it to wiper linkage. I would try grabbing the side that doesn't work and see if it moves independent of the other. You can take the plastic cover off of the arm where the nut is and try to tighten it....make sure the arm is in the correct location when you do this so that they are set up correctly and don't hit each other when operating. Let me know what you find. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.

Great video! Cool trick getting the wiper arms off by keeping the nut on there and tapping with a hammer while pulling up on the wiper arm. I thought you could only do it with a puller. I took that whole assembly out the other day on my van ('01 Town & Country) cause I wanted to change valve cover gaskets. I lucked out cause the wipers still worked perfectly when I got it all back together. Although I did mark their position with a sharpie before I initially removed them. Your videos are excellent! Keep up the great work! Cheers!

HI MotorCity Mechanic, can you provide a parts number for this motor? Mine is exactly like the one you replaced in this video, yet all the parts shops in my area only seem to carry one that has a different electrical hookup and is incompatible with my vehicle. Its super frustrating- they all cheerfully tell me they have my part and each one is the same- no hookup boot coming out of the motor on the side, just two ports on the bottom of the motor that look like they're supposed to push down into something on the floor of the tray/basket. Can anybody offer help?

All you need to do is get up close and personal with it lol. I just act like I am giving it a hug and just reach around. There is no need to remove anything. You have plenty of room to get to all the back plugs and wires. It may be more by touch then sight but after doing the front side....you should have a good understanding where they are located and what to expect. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

my wiper stopped working a awhile back it would work if i pushed in the washer part. but only wipe once each time i pushed it now i get nothing any suggestions? its a 1996 grand caravan.
@MotorCityMechanic9 жыл бұрын
+kodiackid Evening, looking at the wiring diagram.....the motor and relay should be okay if working with the washer. The other two possibilities are the multifunction switch (wiper switch) or the body control module. There's also the possibility of a wiring issue as well. What helps is having a scanner that can access the body control module and look at the data related to the wiper switch so see if each position is registering. Because the operation is controlled directly by the body control module so its our eyes and ears.
@kodiackid9 жыл бұрын
I opened up the wiper compartment today to find it full of water and there is a drain that was clogged that rests above the serpentine belt do you think water killed the motor even though I haven't been able to use it? Mine's a 2005 silver Grand Caravan SXT 3.8L - is that what yours is? - and it owes me and my three boys nothing ... but it's such a great utilitarian vehicle with a ton of 'jam' and a comfortable ride and we've gone all over with it - hockey, soccer, camping, hiking, hauling - I just hate to get rid of it and instead prefer to learn about vehicle maintenance and repair and show the boys a few tricks at the same time. In closing, you do an EXCELLENT job of describing and the camera and editing work is equally impressive. Any tricks on 'clamping off' a leaky power steering hose until I can get out to the country shop and replace it in a couple of weeks? For example, I'm about to wrap and clamp a section of power steering hose over top of where the leak may be at its worse - provided I can find that - I believe its passenger side somewhere behind the metal heat-sheathing ... which is why I'm looking to remove the 'cow' (is that the term)? i.e. in order to get some room back there to work. Also need to then replace the sway bar frame bushings, replace the muffler, do the front brakes. {Bravo and well done!}
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Chapman I have no real tricks on the leak other than trying what you mentioned. My van was the same year and same engine,. It got totaled in a rear end accident and then we moved on to the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The van had lots of room for sure. Hate to have seen it go like that but still love that jeep lol.
@taylorowner9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the smart way to do it. I may have to replace the motor in my 2002 T&C; but maybe not. Here is the problem.The van sat for about 6 months un-driven because of some cooling system issues. With those solved and metal pipes replaced, the van is back in service. However, the wipers make a groaning sound when they operate. They always work at both speeds and intermittent. Is the groaning or moaning something needing lubrication, or is it the precursor to the motor eventually failing. Because the wipers didn't moan when the van was in constant us and only started after the period of non use I considered the noise to be from non use.What is your opinion?Also, do you have a video on replacing the motor for the rear wiper on the Chrysler Mini vans? Mine has failed.
@MotorCityMechanic9 жыл бұрын
+taylorowner Hey there. It wouldn't hurt to remove that front cowl panel and spray the joints/pivots with some wd40 and operate the wiper to see if the noise gets better. If noise still there....then you can remove the linkage from the wiper motor itself and then see if the noise is present....if so then you will need the motor. I really don't recommend aftermarket motors.....the one I installed failed within a week. You can put the word lifetime on a box and it means nothing if it fails in the middle of a down pour. Because when else will you be able to tell it fails....when you use it due to rain. I then replaced that unit with a mopar replacement. no issue since. I don't currently have an videos on the rear....actually haven't had to replace on yet. Make sure to subscribe so if I do then you will get notified. Thanks for the question

@MotorCityMechanic9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jose. As far as your VW....I don't deal with many imports. But the first thing I would check is the radiator fan. Make sure it comes on with the a/c. I would think it would have an overhear issue as well if the fan was an issue so I'm not sure. Highway means airflow across the radiator versus no flow sitting still....that's why my thought process went into that direction
