I imagine it's too new for this channel, and it probably never left the US, but CarnEvil always spooked me as a kid, I was so fascinated with it that I used to stand on my tiptoes to peek at the older kids playing it, but I never had the guts to try it. When I look at it now, it's funny to imagine that I'd be so scared of a game without even playing it, but I think that's how a lot of kids experience their first horror game, watching from a distance.

I used to have nightmares of the Area 51 game over screen. The music mixed with the guy turning into an alien with the blood in the background, then jumping at the screen. Got me every time 😂

Shocked that the house of the dead isn’t on this list. The intro to the game traumatized me for life… until I got older and appreciated the game

When i fist saw Spinal Breakers in 1994 it was more unsettling to me than Mortal Kombat two years before, there was a man who finished it in one coin almost every day.

Red Earth: The original Metal Gear Rising. Slicing enemies in half and dramatically squishing their organs. Platinum had to have taken inspiration from it.
In MK Trilogy, it was Cyborg Smoke who had the fatality of blowing up the earth. It was given to Cyrax in Mortal Kombat Gold (Mortal Kombat 4 with additional characters). In Mortal Kombat 1 (2023 game), Cyrax again has this fatality, with a very dramatic shot of the earth being destroyed! I always saw this fatality as a case of taking extreme measures to destroy the enemy, and overdoing it a little... lol Cyrax is stuck in the desert because after defeating Shao Khan, he is without purpose and wanders the earth aimlessly, until he shuts down in the desert. Sonya and Jax eventually retrieve him and awaken his human side. Turns out that like Cyber-Lip, he was just "evilly reprogrammed".

@@jeffread6593 This is a Google translation. Thank you for the very detailed explanation! I'm still a newbie MK fan, so I really appreciate the detailed explanation. The story has many twists and turns and is a bit of a mixed bag, but there's no doubt that it's a very well-made fighting game. This is one game I'd like to see become more popular in Japan.
Interesting how Golden Axe used voice samples from the first Rambo movie.

I'm convinced both Japanese Arcade developers and Western PC Game developers were out to traumatize their audience. The X-Com game over, various scenes in the Command and Conquer series, System Shock and the ending in Doom are prime examples.

For sure. There was the awesome Alien Vs Predator arcade game; Nothing about either of those franchises never unnerved me, except for one thing: People stuck into the walls of their hives to be implanted with 'huggers. in the hive stage of the game, some enemies are zombified hosts that fall out to attack you. Now obviously that isn't what happens in Alien canon, but it took the already disturbing concept and one-up'd it with zombies. Were they being controlled by their chestbursters? What gives??

That giant stone Rick Sanchez from In the Hunt reminds me a bit of Orcus from the 1992 Midway work Total Carnage. Both have a similar theme: as the boss gets injured, it unleashes even more gruesome attacks. Midway would go on to start the Mortal Kombat series later that year, establishing a legacy of gory arcade action. I remember playing through Cyber-Lip very well. The alien mission commander and the twist ending seem like a precursor to Half-Life, in which the alien "G-Man" congratulates you on defeating the enemy, and offers you the choice of working with him and his masters or death. It's pretty apparent to me what's happening in Image Fight. The alien plant which corrupted the moon base's computer has also infiltrated the player's ship. In the first playthrough, the humans retrieve the ship, which presumably causes the plant to infest the mothership as well; in the second go, the humans have gotten wise to this ruse and instead destroy the player's ship. Either that or the player character self-destructs to avoid infesting the humans' ship.
