When we got married, during the VietNam war, the ladies magazines always had articles on frugality. Woman's Day and Family Circle were bought at the check out stand and I still have a couple. One is. "150 Gifts to Make Yourself" and the majority of articles were on saving and money management "Fifty meals under 90 cents". I cut out all these articles and saved then in a file I made by cutting the lid off of a Tide detergent box and then cutting the sides down at an angle, and I poured over these articles. Newly weds expected to start with little and it was fun. There was an energy crisis, Jimmy Carter was telling us to turn down the heat and put on sweaters and the whole mindset of the country was different.

It is a much different mindset these days, Lanna. Those magazines sound like a lot of fun to me. I would pour over them too. Thank you for sharing your great story with me. I enjoyed reading it very much :)

Very true! I was born in 65, and my grandparents were depression-era. I grew up with frugal thinking! These days newlyweds spend a huge amount on a wedding and also expect to move into a large furnished house right away. It was probably the advent of credit cards in the 60s right? Before that, it was a long process of saving every penny to make a purchase, and if you didn't shop carefully that money was wasted. Now it seems everything is considered disposable, and I have acquaintances that live in a cycle of re-decorating because they want to follow a new trend.

Exactly. When we started out we had an old table somebody else there out and 2 lawn chairs. We had to use boxes to organize our clothes until we bought a dresser for $2 At an auction. It was ugly until we painted it My neighbour was 94 when she died 10 years ago. They put a down payment on a house and started out with literally nothing more than blankets and whatever else they got for wedding presents. They bought furniture over time second hand from neighbours who were moving and had that mortgage paid off in 10 years. And then they paid cash for everything for the next 60 years.

@@notahoarderorcollector.dep8819 We had to replace our old furnace 10 years ago. It had been converted from coal but the burner went and it would have cost $10k to have it recertified. When the guys came to replace it they looked at it in awe and took pictures. They said it was more efficient than anything built today and apparently the guy who converted it was famous among the local furnace guys. Lol who knew? Our new furnace was the best we could get but nope...it isn't as good.

Shopping grocery outlet and clearance are the way to go. I’m very frugal that way and always look for a deal. I coupon a lot so I can save for fun things. Also be aware of goodwill type stores as some charge way too much and looking for clearance up to 80-90% at retailers saves even more. One thing was the solo moulding putty I will be going to Michaels for today for my older school age nephews! It will be part of their Easter bag I give them. And one for me, I am a big time list maker and use pencils daily! As for paper towels I have always felt they were wasteful. I do buy the select a size but one roll can be on my paper towel holder for 5 months! I have used for years old kitchen towels which became stained to use as paper towels. I loved these towels because they were CuisinartI do buy Kirkland’s/Costco brand napkins because they are compressed into a 4 pack and are better quality them the 350-400 count cheapie brands for $4. Lasts us forever and I use old kitchen towels that are worn or stained. I throw them in a small bucket in my washroom and wash when it hits a certain level. In San Antonio we have a Hill Country grocery brand sold at HEB Grocery that makes the BEST BEST BEST kitchen kitchen wash cloths. I have stopped using sponges because of them. They are absorbent, yet wring dry great for spills. A 3 pack is only $1. 50. I have bought them for all the grown women in my family and they love then too. Thank you so much for sharing.

Make sure your really read your auto insurance policy before opting out on the rental car insurance. I work in auto insurance. 99% of policies only cover the rental if it's being used as a temporary substitute, while one of your owned vehicles is out of commission. A rental for taking a trip or while on vacation is completely different.

And a lot of people forget that an accident in a rental car is equivalent to an accident in your car, so if something were to happen God forbid, you would have to pay your deductible to the rental company and any fees that insurance refuses to pay. Don’t forget about your insurance rates going up due to an accident being on your record. I used to work in the industry and I’ve seen it happen way too often.

I am pretty low waste. However, with 3 kids I found that purchasing a handful of plastic folders for school was a game changer. Instead of annual paper folder purchases, we are still using the same plastic ones (over a dozen years). Buying them during school sales was really cheap.
@TheFrugalMinimalist5 жыл бұрын
Those plastic folders do hold up for longer but I've never had one hold up for a dozen years, Lori! That's really impressive that your kids have maintained those for so long! Stocking up during school sales is a very smart thing to do. 🙌. Thank you for your great tips and for watching. I hope you're having a great day!

Great content! Some tips over the years i picked up are toget free magazines and fliers and reuse them for other purposes such as making origami boxes for storage for small things like clips and like as wrapping paper or to line surfaces with it instead of coasters , using old newspapers to line trash cans rather than bags , using charcoal ( the ones for bbq ) as a general deodorizer, also keep those free silica bags from shoes and bags and use those to make leather bags and shoes last much longer in storage since they absorb moisture in the air, there is also this new gadget from japan which is a stapleless stapler which may also lessen unecessary staples.
@TheFrugalMinimalist5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your excellent tips! I very much like the idea of making something out of free items. Origami can yield useful things for sure. That’s amazing you line trash cans with newspaper. Do you have to fold them to work? Great tips on the charcoal, silica packets and stapler too! I’ve not heard of that stapler and it always irked me to have the few staples left. It’s a pain but I’ve gotten to use those little staples in a conventional stapler Takes some dedication but that new gadget sounds much more green and pain free! Thank you again for your excellent ideas. I love frugal talk! 🙌. Thank you for watching and I hope you’re having a great weekend!
@lightandnightEQUINOX5 жыл бұрын
@@TheFrugalMinimalist nope , we just take 2 large sheets and line it directly It works for smaller sized trash cans perfectly. As for the staples. SAME. Those last few pieces always just end up going to waste. The stapless stapler does cost quite a bit more, but it's worth it on the long run.

Thanks for the video and all the tips! I love being frugal-it requires you to be creative and think "How can I get what I want/need either for free or by not spending very much?" You're very welcome! I used to watch MacGyver way back in the day and liken frugality to him being able to get out of those tough situations. That was an excellent informative video and I truly appreciate it. Oddly enough, I rewatched a few of your videos today and here came this video into my notifications. Made my day ❣️. I have one question about food items that go on sale in cycles. What are they and how do you know when they will come up for sale. Did my question even make sense ? It’s one of those days for me lol. Thank you for doing this video. I enjoyed it as well as learned from it ❤️
@TheFrugalMinimalist5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimmarie! The cycles usually go along with seasons or holidays and I found that either bucking the trend or going with the trends can save money. Like I've found a lot of huge pasta sales in the late summer, early fall when there are heartier dishes being served. I've even seen one pasta clearance in January because I think people were dieting and not buying so much. Stock was high and expiration was closer than they liked I think. Meats I'll shop for either right before or after big holidays. Especially after because most people have leftovers and don't grocery shop 😂 Labor Day is always a great time to find sale steaks. Lots of processed snack foods like granola bars will hit discount stores pretty much right after school starts. Things like that! I hope this answer your question! Thank you again for your kind worlds and support!! I hope you have a great weekend! 💕

The window fan, you can get by with a cheapo box fan, or do like I do and use a high-velocity fan that was given to me about five years ago because it didn't work all that well. Some oiling and cleaning and it worked fine. I also have a whole house fan from the 1950s that I plan to restore and use. I picked it up off the side of the road. It works, but the wiring is dodgy so needs to be replaced. It also needs proper lubrication and a good cleaning and maybe repainting. It moves a LOT of air.

I just found this and subscribed. Very good info. It is amazing how much money can be saved without a loss to quality of life. I am driving a 2001 Chev Blazer. Runs well, looks just fine. Regular maintenance and service from a good full service garage keeps it like new. Savings on insurance and registration are considerable. Cable TV is the biggest ripoff. One third of viewing is commercials, then loaded up with realty shows which are cheap for them to produce. There other streaming services besides Netflix, also can buy an antenna that picks up near signals in area.
