Nice video! (sub'd) Did you end up needing to resharpen after touching the blade with the mouth closing plate? I would think not since it didn't seem to be a violent impact...

It wasn't bad. I don't recall it needing sharpening right away. I think I went straight to truing up some stock with it, so a small ding wouldn't have been a problem.

Great video. Thank you for sharing your experience. Just a quick question, if you don't mind. That water bottle looks pretty good. Which brand is it? Thank you.

I don’t know the brand. Though I’m not sure that would help. I bought it at a home center. I’ve had several and every time I need another the store is carrying a different brand. Search “Garden Sprayer” and you should find something that works.

Have you use a veritas low angle jack plane.?
@thejointeffort

Yes. That was my first bench plane. It works well. And I really like the PM V-11 steel that Veritas makes. But over the years I’ve come to prefer the overall design and especially the shape of the handles on the Lie-Nielsen planes.

Bye the way….. I’m liking that Swarf T-shirt…… must be custom?

Thanks Fred! Yeah, it was a custom shirt. I’ve actually work mine out… I may have to print up some more. Maybe I should float a pre-order on the Joint Effort to see who might be interested. 🤔

Sorry, JE. This is an incredibly inefficient method, and I would not advise it at all. I've been cambering BU planes for 20 years, and can do all this work in under 3 minutes! Step 1: grind the primary bevel at 25 degrees (I hollow grind). The low angle makes for less metal to remove. DO NOT grind at 45+ degrees. There is too much steel to camber. Step 2: Add the chosen secondary angle when you hone, and add the camber at the same time. EG Add a 50 degree secondary/micro bevel and camber this. There is little steel to remove, and it should take a minute or two to do. Done. Regards from Perth, Derek Cohen

Your "unequal" problem is you lost count of the number of strokes you made on each side. That's easy to do if you let your mind wander even a little as work. I noticed in camber videos that blades are sharpened fully square, and then maybe 4 - 5 camber strokes per side are taken and no more. The cambered edge does not have to be raised high off the surface of your board to avoid leaving marks. If that's the case maybe your board first needs to be flattened. I do not use a chambered blade when I am trying to maintain a square edge in a workpiece especially for jointing. Having a few extra blades allows for experimentation of higher or lower angles as opposing to using high angle frogs. I have not tried it with a plane blade yet but I have read that chisels should not be sharpened to an angle of more than 25° due to thinning and thus weakening the edge potentially causing chipping when the tool is used. This next point is not directly related to your video but I have noticed that there is no reason any cut has to be made 90° to a workpiece. Rotating the front edge of a plane skews the blade away from the direction of the cut and does two things: it makes the cut 1) easier in difficult grain and end grain (and sometimes possible at all) and 2) in a pinch it allows a slightly dull blade to still make a clean cut. I suspect that not all of us stop to sharpen a blade every time we should, especially when only a few more passes remain.

I liked your methodical even fussy approach. Plane setup is about the details. Impatient Ruffians need not apply.

Like so many things, it seems really fussy until you build a routine. Then it kind of happens on its own… not much thought or time required.
