In an interview with Doris Roberts, she said the writers eliminated many of Robert’s lines because Brad’s wonderful facial expressions made them unnecessary and were actually funnier than the spoken lines.

That house was amazing - the clashing curtains and wallpaper, the blousy pelmets everywhere and picket fences. Absolutely insane, yet somehow it worked. I always liked the landscape picture above Ray and Debra's bed too. It was cosy but chaotic.

in retrospect i thought the same too but my grandparents house was always open door policy with all of us. we were always over there like ray's parents were here, their doors only got locked at night we'd just come inside bc in a way it was our home too, would feel weird to knock or ring the bell before we entered and they wouldnt understand why we wouldnt just come in. (i also think people who keep their doors locked all times were once victims of a burglary of some type, those who keep them unlocked probably have always felt safe at home)
