When the show was first on, my kids were about nine and five years old so I related more to Deborah Now that I am 68 and have two little granddaughters and know how exhausted they can make you, I relate totally to Marie Plus, I love Marie because she reminds me of my grandma

Ray Romano’s life for the most part. His older brother was really a cop, who really actually touches his food to his chin before he eats. He really had (at the time the show began) a daughter and twin boys. With the daughter on the show being named after his real life daughter Alexandra aka Ally. In the pilot episode the twins were named after his real life twins but that changed their names after the show was picked up. However, after the show began he actually had another child in real life. The dad character is based on Ray Romano’s father and the mom character is based on a mix of Phil Rosenthal (the creators) mother and Ray’s. Ray has said Phil’s mom is more the overbearing type like Marie was than his actual mother. When the show began Ray and his family lived in New York and his parents lived right up the street, rather than across the street but still the same neighborhood. Also, Ray was actually a futon delivery guy just like in the episode where they flashback to where he met Debra.

The only unrealistic part of the show is that Marie is always dressed up to the nines. Housewives don't do that especially when they're cleaning house, cleaning toilets and cooking. She always looks like she's going to a cocktail party.
