It took me about four half days total to complete my head gasket install (blown by the 7th cylinder and the water jacket). I can happily report my disco is back up and running! Tons of props to you and the Atlantic British youtube for having such a clear and concise videos! I also have secondary air and forgot the pipes connecting the two cannisters on each side of the engine, but luckily, I was able to shift the harnesses and lines out of the way and slip it behind the intake manifold. Probably would have been easier to do this before putting the intake back on so here's a heads up for anyone else.

On the head bolts, after I did the initial 15-ft-lbs snug, I used a paint marker to put a white dot on each bolt head, pointing to the front of the engine (this took maybe a couple of minutes). This gives you a reference for knowing when you've turned them enough: After the first 90-degree tighten, they'll all point to the right side of the car, and when you're done, the dots will all be pointing to the back of the engine. Without a visual reference it can be a bit confusing--especially if you have to "reset" when you run out of room to swing the breaker bar. (Land Rover could have just mounted everything one inch further forward and we'd all be happier! Everything at the back, especially those two corner head bolts, is a royal pain.)

Cheers Doug! From a Yank in the UK. 2001 NAS Disco 2 V8 owner here with problematic SAI system! lol @51:19 I found that a Saab 55557389 vacuum connector has the same dimensions as the Land Rover part. Easy to internally punch it out from inside the intake manifold with a long extension and a 1/4” adapter at the tip.

2 comments: seems like you went beyond the 90* when you broke it into 3 or so 45* turns..? And I thought the pushrods were to be numbered to the proper rocker; when you cleaned them up, that no longer matters? Thanks for the educational videos!!

Tip !, Take heads to a machine shop and get them docked and cleaned !., It was worth the money !.Also replace the valve seals and re seat the valves (with past and a lapping stick )..Also when refitting rocker covers replace the 4 bolts with slightly shorter ones , I did mine with Alan key head And use the blue air craft sealer on both sides of the rubber gasket !, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THESE 4 BLOTS , On each one as you could crack some thing !. I did my head gaskets last year and they still don't leak !.Tip 2 replace spark plug leads and coil packs as it will save hours of labour later , Tip 3 I used all of the steel exhaust manifold gaskets , it worked fine no leaks , I also re tightened them after a 200 kms , I also did the same with the intake manifold .Also use new head bolts , And do not use the torque settings on the box the gasket s come in do it like this bloke says !!!

In part #1 mention was made of a head stud kit in lieu of the TTY bolts. Is it possible to get the heads on and off with the studs installed? Seems it would be pretty tight, especially driver's side.

Is there anything that can be done to re-engineer the engine so that it's less prone to head gasket failure? Like a bigger radiator core and a lower thermostat?
@danielhurst8863
@danielhurst8863 3 жыл бұрын
You can use a 180 thermostat instead of the 190. The engine design is old is predates the CAFE laws for mileage and emissions. To meet the modern standards in the Discoveries, the temperature needed to be hotter, and that causes long term issues with the aluminum engine. The engine is simply running a bit hotter than it was designed for, and this causes issues.

A big tip do the tension on the head bolts as in the video !, If you do the torque as per the Gaskets the head gaskets will leak !.It is called torque by degrees < the easiest way is to put a chalk mark , Then go ninety from that !.That is after snug in them down with a torque wrench !.

Hey dude, excellent stuff, very professional and informative but a bit late in my case since I did this job 2 weeks ago. My question is, I have a 4 wire connector at the back of the engine that pulled out of it's socket and I need to know which wires go into which connector location. I believe it goes to the transmission but have to take another look today. it's basically about oil pan bolt level and at the drivers side against the firewall and I believe it was grey in color (not at the Disco II right now and it's 4.0 with Automatic. I believe its for the transmission because when I floor it, it doesnt kick down into a lower gear. Thanks
