This video is dedicated to the units that use EP oils as lubrication. The diffs and transfer box oils are changed together on a service. Lets look into the details and how to replace them using Original Technical Data to help us.

Ok but my Disco is not a truck and I’m not working in a quarry!,,Because I live in Italy where there is more dust are you saying I should change oils every month?..

Ah, okay same person different name,.......... to save a lot of words I would recommend that you have your vehicle regularly serviced at a garage where you can take their advice on what is the best interval for servicing your car for the use it has and the environment you live in. Servicing doesn't just involve changing oils but also inspecting other components which may help your oil work well. Anyway. Italy is Europe, all be it Southern Europe. I would NOT call the environment in which you live severe enough to warrant frequent oil changes. Perhaps places like Morrocco or the Middle East where sand gets in everywhere. I'd also say that Iceland has similar problems but with volcanic ash. As the example I set earlier it was also a probe to see if you understand some technical comparisons on oils ie: 80/90 as compared to EP 130 which is just a heavier viscosity. HGV or car or 4x4s. There is no difference in the lubrication they use only what product / grade etc. is used where and when. I would advice once again to seek advice from people in your locality.

Another reason to undo the filler plug first is so that if it’s seized and you can’t get it undone you still have oil in your diff and can drive the vehicle, if you drop the oil first and then can’t get the filler plug off you are stuffed.

Another good reason to unbolt the top plug first: if you undo the lower one first and drain, then find out the top plug is rusted shut, you're in a bit of a bind.

Your videos are phenomenal, just an unbelievably huge assistance to me in my Rover care. I've referenced Atlantic British videos for a lot of maintenance and basic repairs, valve cover gaskets and the like, but you guys go much farther in-depth and much more specific, like with your transfer case videos and prop shaft repair videos. Your videos will help me keep my Disco 2 2004 alive hopefully for many years to come. If you happen to check the comments, would you know how on earth a hole might appear in a new transfer case drain plug? Have you ever heard of this? I just replaced my transfer case oil two weeks ago and fitted brand new plugs, the correct plugs, and now two weeks later I'm noticing transfer case oil around the case and a hole has appeared right in the center of the plug, possibly not all the way through but at least partially. The Disco started shaking on acceleration just in the last two days. But I took a 2,000 mile trip right after changing out the transfer case oils and didn't have any issues the entire trip, it was only after getting home that the shaking grew very notable on acceleration and I've stopped driving it to diagnose the problem. Curious if you've ever heard of this hole in the drain plug appearing.

Land Rover is expensive but if they were offing synthetic oils and you have brought mineral oil then you have to change the oil at the recommended service interval for that type of oil.

I have a 2008 LR2 and the engine was stumbling/sputtering. I took to an Auto Zone and they connected to the code reader because the check engine light came on and the code was P0088 Fuel Rail/System Pressure too high. The check engine light went out and then came back on. I took it to Land Rover and they couldn't find any issues other than a software update needed to be done. Just the other day my LR2 started doing the same thing and the engine light came on and went off this morning. Could it have been bad gas in my lines?

@andrewx86x
@andrewx86x 6 жыл бұрын
I have a 2015 Defender that has had a rear diff replaced at 35,000 km (possibly due to bearing failure - surely they could have fixed this by now), but notice that the temperature of the new rear unit is quite hot (Maybe 45-50 deg), whilst the front isn't hot at all. Just barely warm. This is after a highway run, vehicle unloaded. It's a 50:50 torque split, as you know, so why the massive difference? They should be the same temperature! Hopefully the oil holds up, but I worry about the bearings over time. We all know that the transfer gets damn hot. At least 70 deg plus!
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 6 жыл бұрын
I don't expect an even distribution of power to either from or rear axles via the centre diff until it is locked. As it is a differential it will be distributed where needed. I've noticed that the front differential is always the one with the most work worn oil and damage.

@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 7 жыл бұрын
25Nm. If it is the plastic cap one ( the 2.2 Duratorq is a canister filter) then go by all the other manufacturers which is 25Nm max. Any tighter and you run the risk of cracking it.

I have got a land rover lr2 2008, and my rear wheel drive don't seem to work, it says its got a transmission system fault, and when i turn the terrain knob, it says terrain system fault too. I went and checked it out it says is o711 (transmission fluid temp sensor) I don't have any land rover dealer around me. What can my local mechanics do ? Can you tell me what the problem is ? Please ! Thank you

It says to “renew” monthly. I’m an American (in Brasil). Does “Renew” mean top off? Obviously I’ll see the color and condition at this time, but just want to make sure it’s not telling me to change it ;)

Plain European English ;) So you change your Diff fluid monthly? I can understand if you are off roading and running through rivers and such, but if it never sees the trail for 4 months or 6, would you still change "Renew" it? Or just dip your finger in and make sure it's topped off and clean?

If you are running road without off-roading then it is not necessary to replace the oils frequently. Just check and top up as required.

You will need to shorten your oil service intervals IF you are working in extremes. Driving on road is not the same as taking your vehicles regularly through water, mud, unmetalled roads etc. Depending on the severity of your environment that will determine how often you replace your oils. You could use EP130 in your Diffs and transfer box if it is very hot climate... It is an oil used in the truck when they are working in quarries where the usual oil would still be 80/90.
