Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 36
I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students, and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency. Here is a link to the playlist I am adding to: • Online Learning During...
If you have not seen the Part 1 video in which I pinch and level the pots, it is linked here! • Part 1 - Efficiency in...
This video is Part 2 of a handbuilding video which shows efficient ways to work in sets using the pinch method. In this video, I show the cleaning process using a shredder (surform), ribs, a notched card, and fingers and water. After it is cleaned, I added design by carving and slip trailing. I show how I match the diameters of the footring, lip, form, etc.
Check out this link to a live searchable Google Doc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! (also some non-amazon suggestions on here!)

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZbin channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

I enjoyed these 2 videos and learned Lots of tips! As a newbeginner in pottery (Raku) I also make all my vessels by hand and it does take longer to clean and have a nice smooth finish. Thanks Karan and you too stay safe and healthy😊

Impressive! Where were you when I was in highschool art classes? I've made my far share of pinch pots but the way you go about getting them smooth and uniform with each other was an eye opener. Could you do a video on handbuilding lids. And one on making redware like the german folks who settled in Pennsylvania made. I realize they did a lot of drape molding and probably wheel throwing, but I would like to try their technique on handbuilt containers. Much thanks for your informative videos.

Could you show the Asian method of how to start throwing, using a base slab and 2 starter coils? I'm an old lady with weak wrists and just starting the wheel after forever hand building.

I’m way too much of a perfectionist, I would drive myself mad trying to make sure they were all exactly alike.

What do you do with all the excess shavings? Can you keep them, add a small amount of water to make slip?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I always recycle them, and once it’s in slip form you can then dry it out again to the point of workable plastic clay! Here’s a video I did years ago on how I recycle in my home studio without a pug mill! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ2zcpWJrcaLeLc

Can I ask please , does your shredder get rusty . Mine gets really rusty after washing it
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Жыл бұрын
Hi Shontal! Yes, shredders do rust if kids leave clay on them, or they are washed without much attempt at drying. My school ones that the kids use, I give up on keeping that at bay...however, on my personal shredders at home, I wash well, then rub with a bit of oil, or try a squirt of wd-40 and then remove the majority of the residue with a rag! That increases their longevity!
