How is it doing still holding up. I got one needs going through to make sure can be rebuilt. It's locked up tight. Even if I get it free up and it runs I'd want it to be rebuilt make sure it be reliable. Or might just sell whole mower cub gt2542. Looks like few months old even though bought 06. Really don't know history of it other than people had it did take good care of it locked up they gave it to me. Hey had new battery and starter on it captain chair perfect shape and one of cleanest decks I've ever seen on used mower really cleanest used mower I've ever seen . Idk don't want put lot in it if motors are not great never had cub. Only second Kohler other one had on tiller 6hp years ago. 35 years I thinking. Lol thanks

This was one of favorite video’s. You explained everything and was very thorough. I would not hesitate to do my engine after seeing this. I would have liked seeing the breather valve disassembled as I have a toro groundsmaster with a kohler that fills the air cleaner with so much oil it stops running. I have clean it with carb cleaner before it will run again. Thank you for posting this.

Awesome! Thanks for the great words….. I’m glad it helped someone that’s what it’s all about. I know I try and find a video on everything I do first just to know what I’m in for …. Love KZbin for that. Hopefully you get it fixed… the breather is very simple just the cover, a sponge and a thin reed (flat metal) with one bolt that blocks hole….. just look at the reed make sure it’s not broken and lays flat…. Sometimes if it is slightly bent up you can flip it over and then it will seal again

Helpful video. I’ve got one to do. It always helps to see what it looks like ahead of time. If only I could work that fast…haha! Nice shop by the way. I think my favorite thing is the little red cart. It looks to be exactly the right height. I’m going to go get one before I start.

Are those gears on the crankcase cover metal? The oil pump and governor gears?

My 2002 Husqvarna 5223 zero turn XP with the Kohler Command Pro 23hp engine (made June of 02) has the Cast Iron 80mm bore with 1.5mm rings.. The Engine ID Sticker is Gone and after Calling and Talking to Kohler Corporate, Husqvarna Corporate, and MANY Others, I STILL Don't know which actual Engine designation to buy Parts for my Mower Engine.. This IS Ridiculous from the Mechanic's Point of View.. Wondering if you have had this problem as Well? .. Thanks

@@KenMrKLC, I bought the Engine kit from The Little Red Barn, and it Seems that the Headgaskets are "Supposed to Be" Universal for the 22hp through the 26hp?? .. I Have been a Mechanic and Rebuilding Engines all the way back to Like 8 yrs. Old (started with my Dad and Brothers as Helper).. The Bore size is 80mm on the 23hp.. These Head Gaskets are like 1/4" too Big approximately in the Cylinder Bore location.. Almost 1/8" too Wide on each side of the Bore (Where the cast iron Cylinder liner OD isn't even touched BY the ID on the Gaskets).. This ISN'T a Recipe for a Long lasting Rebuild.. Everything else in the Kit is Fine though.. I'm Hunting Head Gaskets that fit without Paying like 90.00 for OEM Now.. SMDH

I Talked to John at Gardener, and His personal High level of Expertise Helped me to Come Up with the Actual engine designation numbers (since the Silver sticker was Missing), from my Input of Carburetor numbers and other Descriptive info that I had Written Down.. I Knew that Mine was a type A which has the 80mm bore, and the 1.5mm top ring.. Mine (made in June of 2002) also had the Cast Iron bore which is a Great Plus.. Thanks, Richard

Sorry to bother you but I have a quick question, i have a chance to buy a mid 1990s walker with the 16 hp motor, it has 1600 hours on it for $800. It looks and runs pretty good, is this something decent to buy? Can i upgrade the engine later? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 16hp model or more of a homeowner geared machine where the whole body tips forward as opposed to 2 separate units… it depends on your needs but I am mostly only familiar with the MT model. For bagging I wouldn’t want any less than the 20hp I have which in later years they upgraded to 25, 23, 27 26 31hp …. There is a predator 23 motor swap in one of those models on KZbin….. I personally wouldn’t use that model unless it’s just for a starter unit or to toy with. Even a free mower could be too expensive if you have to put more into it than it’s worth in the end. I see the MT model like mine for sale cheap pretty often needing repair

I just used the Laguna 4" Cylinder hone from Harbor Freight... Most Hones are the same

Sorry if I missed it but what kind of honer do you use and did you re-use the original head bolts? It looked like I seen you cleaning them up and reusing, if so would you recommend it? Thanks so much for the video

Yeh I see why all the manufacturers are dropping Kohler they have dropped the ball on these engines trying to make a mint off us suckers , good video im going to have to do mine also and I had a imposable time just trying to get imfomation about the starter on this junk .
