Alex Kidd in Shinobi world is one of the best games on the system. Didn’t play it as a kid, so no nostalgia, it’s solid. Edit: Golvellius is really good. And difficult.
@caseyhayes45902 жыл бұрын
I played most of the great SMS games around 2000 for first time while I was playing new PS/Saturn/Dreamcast games so they were all 10-15 years old at the time. I found a good 20-30 titles that an NES-only player really missed out on. I played a lot of them on real hardware (the best games I could find in US pawn shops and game shops at the time, cheap but hard to find), missile defense 3D with the gun and glasses is probably just lost forever now to most considering you need system, gun, glasses and CRT tv.

Golvellius was good but Golden Axe Warrior was the best zelda-like game. Better than Zelda as well
@caseyhayes45902 жыл бұрын
@@pinebarrenpatriot8289 It's a typical question of should these systems have the more common games that defined systems and players actually played. Or the super rare expensive games that are awesome that nobody could find or afford unless they bought them the month they came out. I mean playing Golvellius on real hardware isn't prohibitively expensive, playing Golden Axe Warrior with a real cart and system and gamepad is (and has been since the late 90s).
@pinebarrenpatriot82892 жыл бұрын
@@caseyhayes4590 same can be said for hundreds of 8-bit games across the board on multiple consoles especially later sequels in the Mega Man series for example when they were considered irrelevant as the 16 bit Era was taking over so nobody knew how expensive these less produced carts would become. That's Retro collecting in a nutshell across the board. Just like Golden Axe Warrior, I would of bought 5 NEO-GEO's with all money if I knew then what we know now. But that wasn't the point. Golden Axe Warrior is just simply a better game. I'm not debating the price or availability
@caseyhayes45902 жыл бұрын
@@pinebarrenpatriot8289 I mean some people want "nostalgia" games that they remember more than the best games, almost nobody has nostalgia for Golden Axe Warrior. I'm with you that I'd want the best games and even more likely to want rare games I missed when they were new. On Saturn I happened to buy nearly every rare US game but on other retro systems I never had most of those games because I was moving on like everybody else. It's the same thing including the 3 button Genesis controller over the 6 button for US market...the three button is more nostalgia for more people so that's what they included. IMHO great games nobody played because a console had become obscure are among the best to put on these (Monsterworld IV on Genesis mini is great example). In the case of SMS the entire library is obscure to many who might want to try it. I think SLX was trying to predict what would actually be on there and considered things like that...same with Alex Kidd in Shinobi world getting left off first list, easily best Alex Kidd game but the least actually played at the time.

@@UltimateGamerCC it failure wasn't caused by nintendo only. first of all you have to think that japanese executives were mentally closed and sega was very corporative, unwise and unpolite. they thought to sell unit only with their internal developed and published games and there was not a true open third party mentality, they failed in japan with all the console except saturn but master system and megadrive sold well in other country because the emea chief was very wise and skilled. In fact after they refused to work with sony and sgi to build megadrive successor, powerfull and easy to program and subsequently tom kalinske resignation they pratically suicided themselves. Saturn was very difficult to program, they build a complex hardware without taking care of 3d specifications, all 3d modelling software used and are still using triangles as basic primitives for example and they didn't wanted to marry the right way to approach 3d, but they wanted to fight on the same field in which every one else was more capable of them (like italian horsemen fought against soviet tanks during world war)

If Sega ever decides to make a Master System Mini, they should do three important things with it. They need to give players the option to switch between the PSG and FM music and sound. They also need to take off the region-locking on the console. Lastly, Sega must not put ALF on the Master System Mini, because viewers know that game looks and plays terribly because of AVGN.
@Cyberbrickmaster19862 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The AVGN knows how to rip apart a game even when it's good! But when it's bad, that when he really lets out his fury! Sure he was pretty harsh on Winter Games and The Last Ninja, which were considered good on the Commodore 64, but those he reviewed were supposedly inferior NES ports. The Last Ninja especially brought him back in his place after his 200th episode gave him a wake up call on how bad games can be effected by game crunch, teasing us into thinking we've seen the last of him for a while.

Your last few words in the video speak very true. If this project was to go ahead Sega really gotta add some special features in the settings options of the Mini to help please the community, especially if licensing of some of the games on the system is going to be a problem pissing people off. I will boycott this if it were ever to retail without supporting 50Hz. We need: 1. A designated PAL option to run the games in 50Hz by choice. 60Hz by default though. 2. A pause button on the controller. 3. The choice between FM and PSG sound output. 4. Fix the controller issues with some of the games like Wonderboy In Monsterland, Tennis Ace and Bomberaid all freaking out if a Mega Drive controller was inserted. 5. 100% accuracy of that 4th PSG noise channel, it can't sound like someone dragging a sack of potatoes across the floor like in emulators and it can't sound like it's almost non-existant like in Kega Fusion and Gens Plus where they softened the noise channel so it was almost not heard. The games i'd like to see personally included are Laser Ghost, Alien Storm, Dynamite Dux, Alex Kidd The Lost Stars & Shadow Dancer, all of which are Sega's own IPs and should have no issue being included. Great video SLX!

They might even use a CRT and those powerful arcade speakers to let you play those shooter games like Virtua Cop. There are arcade systems out there, but they almost all play just one or two games. Sad.

As I never had the chance to experience the Master System back in the 8 bit days, I would absolutely buy a mini for a good price.

Gotta have it! Something so unique and special about that SMS sound. I think it would need a light gun and Gangster Land., Great Baseball is a fantastic too.

I want a Master System Mini so bad. I grew up on the SMS, and my fondest memory of gaming comes from that console. I remember saving up the extra money to get Phantasy Star after seeing the commercial. I played it through so many times, and memorized all the dungeons. I need to play it again. From the video today, Action Fighter was one of my all-time favorites, I spent so much time playing that one, and it was great to not spend all my money on the Spy Hunter arcade game. I'd need to have those two, R-Type, the Shinobi titles, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Space Harrier, and it would be nice to have Miracle Warriors and Kenseiden. If Sega does make a Master System Mini, the controllers need to have the little joystick, that was one of the many things that made the Master System light years better than the NES.

Crazy idea about the 3D glasses.... How much could a 'mini' cost if it was in the form of the 3D glasses and a controller? More like a Virtual Boy, just with modern, lighter, but hopefully inexpensive components? I'm sure it would be overkill for a few Master System games, but I'm thinking that the 3D versions of classic Sega games that were released on Nintendo 3DS deserve another outing. Ports to the existing VR formats like Quest and PSVR would be more sensible, but we all know that it's impossible for Sega to choose the most sensible way to do anything.

Astrix and Enduro Racer (both JPN + international version) for me. E swat + basketball Nightmare would be good also

I grew up with Sega primarily. I started with the Master System being I think my second console after the Atari 2600. I remember playing some great games on the system and really thought it was better than what the NES offered at the time. I hadn't played much of the NES back then so I didn't really have that good of a grasp on what was available outside of Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Bros 1 and 2, Duckhunt and a few others. While I was playing games like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World Castle of Illusion, Shinobi, R-Type, Wonderboy in in Monster Land, Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap etc. It wasn't until years later that I realised that how good the NES was after seeing reviews of games and then trying them for myself. But back then though it was Master System all day long for me.

Great follow up video! All they need to is let you add you own GG and SMS roms via thumb drive or ssd.

15:25, Now the Gun might be expensive to reproduce because you would have to add a built in camera with special software but I don't think the glasses would be too expensive to reproduce because were talking about a CRT television, (Not a 3D television) rechargeable active shutter glasses with a dongle doesn't sound too expensive especially not for 30 year old games and hardware.

A product like 3D glasses would still be in the $50 range, easily approaching the cost of the main unit itself. I don’t believe Sega would risk that on a potentially small money-making device like this. It isn’t really about what can and can’t be done here. It’s more about how Sega sees its profit potential.

Now this is a good list! Of course a few are nostalgic picks but such a compilation should have at least one or two of those too. Sega is also not limited to the arbitrary 20-ish games that nintendo went with.

I could easily see them putting a cart slot (similar form factor to the Switch) then sell extra Game Packs for the licensed games. $40 on top of the base price might seem a lot for a handful of extra games, but $40 for an external cartridge with the Disney licensed games would be just fine IMHO as they really were that good.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is one of my favourite MS games. And Double Dragon.

Hah, and here I purposely avoided making a "Where's game X?" post. While a Master System mini doesn't exist, fortunately M2's ShotTriggers Aleste collection on Switch & PS4 does. Anyone who cares about the Power Strike games needs to grab that ASAP, because the red carpet treatment M2 gives the ShotTriggers games is way beyond anything you'll get out of an emulated mini console. A couple of other titles worth mentioning - the very late-released Wonder Boy V Monster World, which looks AMAZING on the Master System and really shows it had the potential to challenge PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 games. And two rare Japan-only 3rd party games - Solomon's Key & Bubble Bobble, which are both of higher quality than most of the library. Monster World was on the Genesis mini, and Solomon's is a Tecmo game and probably too obscure to merit the licensing, but they're worth mentioning just to give them their due. Bubble Bobble would have almost no nostalgia value tied to the system, but would be a standout 2-player surprise on a Master System mini all the same.

Asterix is very impressive when it comes do graphics. Backgrounds are OK but the character sprites are early 16-bit level. Very detailed and colorful, they did a great job there.
