From Australia. Played Master System up until 1994. Every kid on my street had one. All my friends had one. They were a cheap way for parents to entertain young kids. It'd be cool if they offered PSG/FM options for the games that support FM. Don't wanna be stuck with one or the other. Or they could go the extra mile and allow PSG sound effects and FM music. Some games like After Burner & Thunder Blade have nice FM music but absolutely horrible FM sound effects. The PSG sound effects are infinitely better. Also the pause button needs to be on the controller, but the one on the Mini should work as well. Also they'd put Columns on there instead of Baku Baku because Sega. I'd add Kenseiden, Miracle Warriors, Power Strike, and Golvellius. And you'd know they'd include Fantasy Zone because again Sega.

8:56 As many may know, the Japanese Master System had an FM sound feature that several games took advantage of. And most of those games retained the FM sound data on US and European releases, though those regions didn't get the FM sound module or built in hardware. I you play those games using an emulator or FM supported SD cart, you can access that FM sound. Phantasy Star was one of the only games (maybe the only game?) to have the unused FM sound data removed for western releases, meaning you can't hear the Phantasy Star FM soundtrack if you're using a western ROM (the only ones in English) of the game, even on an emulator, clone console, or SD cartridge that supports FM sound. Which is a real shame because the Phantasy Star FM soundtrack is one of the best on the Master System. There's a ROM hack of the Japanese version that adds English, so you can play in English with FM sound. It also lets you increase the gold and Exp you get from battle by x2 or x4, greatly reducing the amount of grinding you have to do. Phantasy Star was revolutionary for the time, but if you want to play it today, I highly recommend this ROM hack. If they were to make a MS mini with Phantasy Star, these options, at least the FM sound for English, would be great. In fact, allowing FM sound for all English games would be awesome.

Last year, here in the UK, a streaming TV was released known as Sky Glass. You can add shows to your library but you can’t record! I feel you can’t rely fully on streaming. Over-the-air, cable and satellite TV all still have a place in the modern world, they’re especially good for if your internet goes down! Because of this, I came up with an idea for my own TV: I would call it SmartVision, it would have antenna and satellite tuners by default, be modular so you can easily replace a broken HDMI port, add composite AV etc, let you record shows, stream Netflix, Disney+ etc, let you add shows to a list like Sky Glass, and I would also include 50 Sega Master System games! You’d be able to play them using either the remote or Bluetooth Sega controllers (sold separately) The game lineup? Alex Kidd in Miracle World (English and Korean versions would be available) Alex Kidd in Shinobi World Sega Chess (gotta include a few casual titles!) Columns Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine Phantasy Star (English, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese versions would be available) Scramble Spirits Masters of Combat Virtua Fighter Animation R-Type Castle of Illusion Legend of Illusion Deep Duck Trouble Dynamite Dux Sensible Soccer European Championships Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf Road Rash Sonic The Hedgehog Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Sonic Spinball Sonic Chaos Sonic Blast Out Run Space Harrier After Burner Hang On Astro Warrior and Pit Pot Golden Axe Warrior Shinobi Streets of Rage Streets of Rage 2 Basketball Nightmare Not the whole lineup, but you can see where I’m going with this

You would think Sega would have done this already after the success of the NES mini.

I never got around to playing the Master System. I'd like for this to happen, too. Also, a SMS mini would absolutely kill in Brazil.

This would actually have me intrigued to witness, because TecToy have released (and I believe still are) *_a lot_* of new SMS versions over the years. Starting at the 2000s, the consoles were mostly reliant on emulation (not dissimilar to current mini consoles) and had loads of built-in titles (that I totally doubt they had the rights to republish). This has at the same time the appeal to sell like water in the desert, due to the console's appeal in Brazil, or not sell anything at all, because it'll probably come here at a prohibitive price due to currency conversion (unless TT makes another deal with Sega to produce the units locally, like the good ol' days) and with very few titles compared to the many versions TT have already released, so almost no one would feel tempted to buy it.

Oh man, I would love this! The Master System was such a fun console! Cheers and great video!

Until you actually look through the master systems library you realise yes theres enough quality games for a solid reason to release a mini. If they released it with an option for standard or FM sound for games that supported it (R-Type etc etc) would be awesome.

To be honest, the Master System / Mark III is probably the only classic retro system left that we could get a "mini" version of. We aren't going to get any systems with analogue sticks (so anything N64 and later) and most of the rest have been done at this point (at least the ones that were popular enough that they would actually sell). A Saturn mini might be possible, but that console is notoriously difficult to emulate, so maybe not. At the same time however, Sega seem perfectly happy to forget the Master System ever existed for the most part, and would rather push their Mega Drive and classic arcade libraries instead, so it seems unlikely it'll happen.

Fantastic lineup of games, I would totally buy this if they released it. The only major problem I see from Sega's end is that not a lot of people had this system in USA and Japan, so while fans of retro games would be excited it wouldn't get any of the "nostalgia" bucks from casual fans in these markets like the NES and Super NES classics did. Still, a small run of the Master System mini I think would be successful, especially if it comes with favorites like Streets of Rage and Sonic on the box. I think some people would buy it out of curiosity too because here is a system with Streets of Rage and Sonic that they have never seen and never played.

We should get a Master System Mini!!!

The Master system was my first and favorite system. The one game I used to come back to all the time was Action Fighter. I played that all the time even though I was really bad at it.

Will I ever forget that xmas morning, where under the tree, was Quartet. Tainted with personal nostalgia, still my favourite for the system...and top ten of all time.

What, no Golden Axe, Altered Beast or ALF?!?! All kidding aside I think you forgot my favorite shooter on the SMS, Power Strike II

I couldn’t agree more! I would so support this idea! However I got screwed on the Turbo GraphX 16 mini. I live in Canada, couldn’t pre order one in Canada and now there selling for over $300. Huge downer because I’d love to complete my collection, I have Genesis, SNES and NES mini’s.

I think it would also be cool for the master system mini (if it ever comes to be a thing) to also have FM support on the games that had it.

Absolutely fabulous video and I agree with everything you said. I was the Master System kid, my brother the NES kid. One thing though, I am surprised that you didn't mention the fact that Road Rash was a very late, Europe-only exclusive. Online gurus say that the slow gameplay stems from the 50hz broadcast rate of PAL TV's, and that makes sense to me.

You make some great points. Another one is that they could probably hit a price point of $60-$80 while maintaining the quality of the product, thus making it a "why not" for anyone who didn't already consider it a "must have".

The way SEGA think about their history these days, it goes Arcades, Genesis . . . Sonic. They don’t want to acknowledge their perceived failures. Well, those that failed in the States

Dear Sega, I’m ready and willing to give you money for a legitimate means of obtaining old IP. Don’t let the legacies die, you will make lots of money, trust us! Love, A Sega Fan

Regular Canadian Sega Master System soundtrack>FM soundtrack. System will definetly need both Japanese/North American selection for each game.

In my opinion, there are too many RPGs on your list. And some essentials are missing, such as Asterix, Land of illusion, Batman Returns, Moonwalker, Fantasy Zone or Micro Machines. A lot of people don't know, but Rygar was a nice port for Master System, only in Japan: Argos no Juujiken.

Love the list, and the Master System was the first console that I owned! I have a couple opinions on your list, but the majority was great! First off, thank you for knowing about Spellcaster! That's my favorite game on the system! Second, I think Trans Bot is a much better side scrolling space shooter than the SMS version of R-Type And some that should be on there in my opinion, you showed some at the end, but we could get rid of some of the multiple games from one franchise and add these good ones: Hang On Kung Fu Kid (probably my second favorite) Teddy Boy Fantasy Zone Great video though! If they announced this, it would be a day one buy, if not pre-order for me, no question!
