Part 2 of the Land Rover Discovery 300tdi coolant hose replacement. This video covers the method I used to re-fill the system with coolant and bleeding to ensure no air locks.

I'm nitpicking here but with the discovery the heater core is part of the coolant system so unlike other car makes no need to put the heater on :-) I find it annoying since in the summer the heater core radiates heat into the cabine... Aircon saves the day though :-) Great job! I flushed mine a few days ago as well, but engine feel hotter then usual... I still have the stock temp gauge, it stays nice on temp which is not a reference... Anyway, do you have a tutorial for the radiator cap water sensor?? Much obliged! Grtz from Belgium :-)

Thanks for your post. You are correct. On my 1963 Land Rover Series 2a, like many others also, the heater core also has flow from engine and this is why many put a tap to turn off the supply of hot water to the core. As for my coolant level alarm, in my opinion a must have item! Get these from www.enginesaver.com.au/ and it's very easy to install. Cheers,

Sorry i don't know. Perhaps send them an email asking about overseas postage. They are a small item so i would think wouldn't be too expensive.

I followed this technique today, but as I was filling the expansion tank I had left the thermostat and radiator bungs off, the radiator didn't seem to fill very high but I poured a lot of coolant in to the exp. tank. I then filled the radiator itself, and fitted the bung. Following that I topped up the thermostat housing but it kept draining, and the level in the exp. tank would rise even with the cap on tight. Not sure if this is normal, I'm apprehensive to run the engine for too long in case there is air in the head!

Jordan, another way I did it is to disconnect exp tank from frame, the lift so that it sits higher than thermostat housing. Make sure you turn the heater nobs inside to full HOT. Take off thermostat plug and wait until coolant only flow out. Whilst flowing out, put the plug back on. Turn car on and let idle. Turn on heater to start to feel warm air come through. Once you are happy that no air in system, bolt exp tank back on frame and you're done.

I've got air in the heater matrix I'm sure but of course on the 300Tdi the highest point you can /fill is the thermostat body - but on a defender the tops of the heater matrix pipes are *higher* than that. On the old landy you could bleed air from the heater hose. I'll have to try your method of lifting the expansion tank.

As much as I like the 300 tdi the over complication and hose arrangement of the cooling system is poison
