Part 2. Mystery estate trunk opening! We bought everything in a house!

today I dig deeper through our estate purchase and open up years of stored trunks in the basement! what will I find?!?

Just recently, an employee in a Goodwill in Oklahoma USA found $42,000 all in $100 bills in between some donated sweaters. She went on NBC news. They found the owner and it was returned. Andrea received a $1000 reward for her honesty.

I once found a £1000 in tens between the pages of a donated book in my local charity shop. I was a volunteer and I alerted the manager. We couldn’t track the donor because she was not a regular and she never came back again. I think it went in as money donations otherwise the manager kept it 😂

Alex, thank you for thinking of the wig donation. My Mom had cancer and lost her hair, she had two wigs. When she died our family donated them to help women that couldn't afford to buy a wig due to the cost of their medical bills. Again, thank you Alex.

Did you check the names on those silk scarves? Anyone who has bespoke Saville Row suits custom made would likely buy designer scarves, such as Yves St. Laurent, Dior, etc. Vintage and designer buyers will pay over $100 for those silk scarves

It is a real service he provides. Early on he commented that the family were in a different country and could not travel due to pandemic. Even if they could, this would be a daunting and emotionally difficult task. Having someone who is ethical and kind to take care of this is a real blessing.

I was in a coffee shop a long time ago and the walls had shelves and shelves of used for sale books with sofas and comfy chairs and bistro tables all around. It was the coolest place to buy a book or just sit and read and enjoy a cup of coffee☕🥯. Maybe you could do something like that with your coffee shop.

You caught that too! I thought it was funny when he said that the handmade sweaters came from the looms. I have spun enough wool/silk fiber to have over 1,200 yards for one sweater which I knit. That is a lot of spinning for one sweater. But it is so beautiful when you finish. No loom involved, 🤣

@@jenniferr2057 It was the lady's wish that the stuff be donated to the community weaving group. I think joining a group of weavers that work together would certainly be the way to start if you don't have a loom of your own. Trying out a craft without having to invest loads of dollars into it is a wonderful option. I share my craft (soapmaking) with as many people as possible. Some underemployed folks have even learned enough to sell their product to help pay for household bills, so that makes me feel really good.

Our local guild has equipment that we loan to members it's a great way to discover if you like a technique. I was demonstrating at a festival where one of the observers kept bringing friends over to see me "looming" when I was spinning wool on my Columbine wheel. I kept saying " yes, I'm spinning wool into yarn" and she would bring another person over to see me "looming"! I love to demo both spinning and weaving, interacting with people is so much fun.

I can’t believe how much stuff is kept in that house. I personally dread having to leave all my stuff when I die, thinking the kids will curse me! Luckily I don’t have basement or attic! My husband on the other hand has mountains of old tools etc under the house. My daughters will curse me because I have heaps of fabric. My grandson already eyes off my books as we have similar taste...horrid and fantasy! It really is a nightmare for those left behind. I bless the people who donate fabric to thrift stores. Last year I depended on donated fabric to make masks to send to schools and hospitals and also created "mask bags" with arm holes so the school band could use their saxophones. THOSE took a lot of fabric!

OMG! Alex don't just give away those looms, spinning wheels and wool! There are two spinning wheels one in the dinning room in the zip up bag and one in the basement. Without knowing the brand of wheel they could be worth hundreds of dollars. My jaw dropped when I saw the loom in the basement. Large looms like that can go for thousands, sometimes they are worth between $5,000- $10,000!

My grand aunt also had a huge book collection! That on top of the other stuff was a bit overwhelming, I kept finding books in closets etc. After sorting and keeping some, my grandmother refused to let us bring the rest of them to charity... so now she has about 8 boxes full of books next to her own stash. I don’t look forward to having to help sort through all those books and sort again in the (hopefully) far future.

Many towns have little free libraries. A lot of modern books could fill those up. I did read a recommendation recently to not put antique childrens books in those boxes, as they might have lead ink in them. Never realized it before.

Keyboards too... I just gave a colleague a broken Cherry MX-3000 that I got for free about 20 years ago and he told me he saw an even worse one on eBay for 200 Euros! IBM Model Ms are probably the most valuable ones though. Suggestion ... have someone open each unsealed puzzle or game. I cleaned out a hoarder house and found about $200 in a puzzle box in with puzzle pieces. Ironically, this puzzle sat out in the driveway with other board games with a FREE sign on it, unclaimed by anyone after a yard sale. I don’t know why I thought to open it, it was light and obviously missing many pieces. Yikes!

I had a stash of coins and cashed them in at a Coin star machine in the local supermarket. Handing the receipt for £62 to the cashier I was gobsmacked to find I'd pressed the wrong button on the Coin Star machine and donated the lot to WWFA charity.🙄

@@user-ez1tf1vi4m I have one of those iPods and I LOVE it. Bad thing is that I have to use my old MacBook from 2007 to load songs or audiobooks. The reason is that my MacBook Pro 2012 and MacBook Pro from 2020, their OS (operating systems) will not recognize the older iPods. I was so mad when my 2012 MacBook had an update and I realized right away that that update prevented me from adding any music or audiobooks to my Classic iPod. So now I need to buy a new battery for my 2007 MacBook to edit my iPod. Apple shouldn't have done that to the Classic.

Summary: Alex has checked the pockets; he did break even when the car sold; I’m sure he had a good reason to donate the looms, and yes he knew they were valuable; he now knows about money counting machines from the comments; he finds it more difficult to wear a rig when filming and can’t find the harness anyway. I’m sure Alex knows what he is doing and is a good man. Perhaps he donated the Weaving Looms and Supplies to help the Guild and keep the art alive. Thanks Alex for including us on your adventures. Edit needed: The family said it was the woman (whose looms they are), requested they be donated to the Guild. Alex: the general consensus is we are worried about you not wearing a mask in areas where your allergies act up. Just a kind suggestion. 😁 I believe we can move on now.👏👏❤️

The dolls are not storybook dolls, Type in story book dolls on ebay and you will see what the boxes are and hat they look like. Unfortunately the dolls that he showed so far were very common dolls not with much at all. I have collected dolls since 1985 and was wishing he would have opened the other boxes so I could see if any were Ginny dolls. Now they can be worth some money!

Another good outlet for those books: prisons can accept paperbacks, but not hardcovers (at least that's how it is in the States). Good luck with it all.

Yes - he has to condense an entire day's work into a half hour video so he, being a great video maker, doesn't include routine stuff --- he shows us the fun stuff - opening trunks, etc. A long series of pocket checks doesn't really carry the story along!

I think that the guild will loan out any of the weaving and spinning equipment to members who don't have a wheel, or loom, carder, winder, etc. I think the very large looms would stay at the place the guild meets since they are too big to check out for the week or month. I've just heard that they are very generous in letting members use different items that they normally could never afford.

I have dreams, real dreams at night in which what you are doing is happening to me, I'm going through houses that are full on antiques and rooms full of cool things and especially old dolls and I'm so EXCITED. Somehow I realize I own all of these things and then I start to wake up...Oh NO! I guess because I spent a lot of childhood going with my siblings and parents to old dumps in the woods and abandoned houses and auction sales, museums, garage sales, second-hand stores, antique shops, SO FUN!!

If the fiber artist's stuff is donated to a club that's great but I'll admit I'm shocked because there's about $10k+ in there (not retail). I guess this falls under the same idea as the clothing in the Musicians house. All of us fiber lovers in your audience are scratching our heads though since we know that one cone of that warp thread goes for $15 and each of those bags of yarn have easily $200 of wool in them.

Alex said in an earlier comment that it was the owner's wishes to donate the weaving stuff so he is following their instructions. About the Musician house clothing --- Alex got $10,000 for all of it, which paid off what they paid for the entire house contents plus that got all that stuff out of the house. He knew that selling the clothing bit by bit would bring tenfold that amount of money but they don't have a way to store, clean, and sell a huge amount of clothing nor do they have the time. The vintage clothing people have all that. I have learned so much about conducting a business from him. You pick and choose what you can do and can't do as you try to make profits.

Save the dining table and chiars for your coffee shop. It's also nice to have books in a coffee shop - either as a book swap or that people can start reading while they sit in the shop and buy for a $ if they want to take it home. (The $ could even be for charity if people donate books.)

Did you check the pockets of coats and others clothes? I found 7,000 in a coat one time. Was fun. 1,500.00 in a freezer in a box of peas. Several hundred in pots and pans. 75,00 in a book. Many coins in butter containers.

When you were going through the trunk with the dolls, while you went quickly, I did see the groom doll. I still have the same groom with his bride. I am 72 and they were given to me on my 5th birthday. Hope that helps you with dating them.

After my mom passed away end of 2014, I went through her house, which mom and dad had lived in since 1957. Lots of cool stuff, some I knew about and some I did not know about. At the end, though, when every one in the family had taken what they wanted and I had pulled out what I could not bear to get rid of yet, there was a lot of junk and useful stuff I had no use for. Called a company which cleans out houses, sells what is sellable, donates some and trashes the rest. All I did was sit on the couch in the air conditioning and watched them work - 5 guys, 2 trucks, 3 hours, and it was done. I did not even need to vacuum when they were done. Of course, now I am ready to get rid of some of the stuff I 'saved', but it was practically painless, except for missing my parents.

Those model kits are worth a pretty penny. I looked at some that are being made today and they aren't cheap so I know a collector would love to get their hands on those. If you're even already, wow. All I seen were dollar signs everywhere you went. You should do a pop-up video every once in a while showing what certain items sell or sold for. That would be really cool.
