The cps attorney hit the nail on the head when she said the family is not acting on best interest of the child but they’re acting as a matter of pride.

I agree. The dad doesn't want the state involved because he's not able to control the state. And the dad plays the doctor and gives his diagnosis. He has said medical conditions so she must have it also. And removing her from school. Just crazy!

@SOMD-THC I agree with most of your statement. But, agree it not, COVID is a killer. Not for someone healthy usually, but it has happened. My dil, my son, and I discussed each of the 3 affected school years so far on if we were comfortable (yes, they included me as I am their back up daycare for sick days, staffing days, holiday and spring break, etc) with my grands going to school with covid being rampant. I am 54 with my own health concerns, and I am my 84 year old father's sole care giver. Covid is an important discussion every school year. And after heavy travel holidays. My dad was actually hospitalized for 5 days in September due to covid pneumonia, is still dealing with the after affects, and that was not transmitted by my grands. I had covid symptoms for 6 weeks. It's crazy to make a decision for your entire family without considering all aspects. Now, if you had said it sounded like it was the excuse they were using, I would have fully agreed. I doing think it was ever an issue for them, and they were trying to avoid the exact situation they now find themselves in.

The child’s lawyer is great. She clearly expresses her stance, her needs but even more so, she advocated for Carly in a very compassionate way. She covered the legal and safety, education etc. But also covered wanting access to an appropriate friend and her belongings and why. That shows me that her attorney really cares and listens to her client and that is so important. ❤

Thank goodness CPS is involved in this debacle. The Grandmother did a terrible job with her son why should anyone expect her to do any better with her granddaughter! Diet Mountain Dew as a sleep aid???????!!!!!!!! Living in squalid conditions with no hot water for 2 years is an abomination! This is a father who has no ability to keep himself out of jail but expects that what was good enough for him is good enough for his daughter! I believe that he loves his daughter but real love means walking through fire for your children and sometimes that means facing the fact that you do not have the ability or the backbone to put her first in every decision you make. If he had either he would not be in jail with a 12-year-old daughter. Expecting the Grandmother, who also loves this young girl, to raise a child at her advanced age and with her health issues, not to mention no transportation in rural Texas, is beyond selfish! If you want control of your child stay out of jail you asshole. I pray that this sweet girl will thrive with help from professionals who can get her the help she needs!

Anyone who feels bad for grandma, just remember, she raised the man that's been in and out of jail since 16. Who also says he has ADD who also probably didn't receive the emotional and medical support he needed as a child to flourish and now his daughter's going down the same path. I'm so glad they stepped in for her and even though it will be a hard road, I truly hope she can turn things around for her self. It unfortunately just wont be easy the longer you wait to treat children with these needs.

@Ruby_2470
@Ruby_2470 9 ай бұрын
It’s really not fair to come to that conclusion, and you obviously do not have children. You can raise them with the best of intentions and values, and it is up to them ultimately what they decide to do with it. You will fail them by being a helicopter parent and on top of them all of the time but at some point your child is going to have to go out and do that world and do something for them self and you cannot always blame the parent for every choice they make. I find it even more sad that you’re gonna blame a parent for ADD and assume they never had any support for it. Are you also taking into account and how old her son was when this happened because 1520 years ago they didn’t know about ADD like they know now. One day you may have children and one day you will see that you can do the best that you can do but there’s gonna come a time where it’s gonna be their chance to make decisions, and if you allow them to have the excuse of blaming every decision they make on their parents that’s what is actually failing them.
@Ruby_2470
@Ruby_2470 9 ай бұрын
Now that you’re an adult… if you even are… every mistake you’ve ever made, every bad decision you have ever made, you blame that on your parents raising you? I’m sure you got in trouble in school before maybe even been arrested so we can assume that your parents were terrible parents who probably should’ve had their children removed from them if I go by your logic…correct? To me that sounds like a copout at some point you were an adult and it was your choice to make the decision you did. Not your parents grow up. This woman is obviously here fighting for her grandchildren and the only person around to be a parent to these kids. Blame the person who deserves to be blamed.

And they have her out of school so she has no friends living in a rural area. 12 years old sharing a bed with her grandma. Grandma doesnt have enough gas money to bring her to services. They’re keeping her out of school when she already has learning disabilities . Sounds like the girl doesnt even want to go back there and i don’t blame her. Unfortunately this issue with the family is generational. The fact that both grandma and dad think they are providing a safe home shows the way they were raised. Not taking a bath daily and staying clean is a no brainer for us but not to them. Being 12 years old and sleeping with grandma while there of a perfectly good bunk bed is also crazy. Cleaning the home with no clutter is also not important or it could be that grams is too old to clean it up. Either way this cold needs to be taken out of that environment.

When the GAL mentioned that the child wants her clothes and makeup my heart broke. That child does not want to go home but is willing to in order to get out of her current placement. It sounds horrible for her. Put her in a therapeutic foster home with no other kids especially biological children. Sounds like she is worried about being treated unfairly or maybe she has had very bad experiences with other kids. But it would be in her best interest to get as far away from that family as possible. And by all means please make certain that her foster placement will NOT further harm her because it happens.

The grandmother is a doormat her son and grand daughter to walk over when she tries to take control she clearly goes too far. She lacks the tools, finances and I would go as far to say she did not want to deal with what sounds like a difficult child that will take a great deal of effort time and patience. She has clearly been coached because what she is saying now does not match her previous actions such as the state of their living conditions for years. I'm not a Dr but I'm fairly sure Mountain Dew is now a cure for anything other than thirst and to blindly take advice from a non medically trained is just more of her laziness most would have taken the child to the Dr. What I find alarming is that she diagnosed her granddaughter with learning difficulties because she didn't start talking until she was two and a half which is not unusual and this is probably why she neglected the granddaughters educational requirements.

This case hit HARD for me. I just started part 2 and am only a bit into Grandma's testimony, but it echoes so much of what I just went through with my 11 year old daughter and her Paternal Great Grandmother. My ex husbands grandmother has always provided child care for me since my daughter was born. She was AMAZING with my daughter as an infant. Once my daughter got a bit older, and my ex husband and I went through our divorce, our daughter began to act out a bit. Specifically because her Dad uses a VERY military-esque authoritative parenting style in his mom, bordering on abusive in my opinion. The way custody is for us is I have our daughter during the week and Dad has her EVERY weekend. So on Fridays after school she goes to Dad's and is dropped off Monday morning to me around 6 am. I also was working full time and so during the week, Great Grandma would pick her up from school and have her until about 6-7 pm based on traffic and how long it took me to get there to pick her up. Once or twice a week, my daughter would ask to spend the night at her Mimi's. This was fine with me. Until the physical fights began. Much like my ex husband, I began to learn that my daughter's Mimi also used a VERY abbrasive, although not as harsh, parenting style. She is an utter control freak and DEMANDS perfection at EVERY turn. If my daughter had a single HAIR out of place, she was made to re-brush her hair for 100 strokes- no less. If my daughter had a single item of clothing left on the floor of her room, the room was torn up, and my daughter was made to clean it up all over again. Things like that. My daughter began suffering, Yet she continued to WANT to be with her Mimi because she loved her. Finally it came to a head one night when she was staying over. Her Mimi is older- in her late 70's, although VERY healthy and active. But even in the summer, she keeps her home at a sweltering 78 degrees. NEVER less than that. It is STIFLING in there at ALL times. My daughter was breaking out in horrific acne from sweating. My daughter had enough one night, and attempted to turn the thermostat down. This sent her Mimi into a rage and a physical fight broke out. I got a phone call at 1 am from her Mimi saying I needed to pick her up RIGHT THIS INSTANT because of the thermostat. Mimi has since been completely cut out of lives at my DAUGHTER'S request. She finally had enough and had to put the love for her Mimi on ther backburner. Even at the tender age of 11 she had the self awareness to know no matter how much she loved her Mimi, this couldn't continue. All of us, including my daughter's father, Mimi's Grandson, has cut off contact with her and we have not seen or spoken to her since that date. And I can honestly say, my daughter is THRIVING now!!

As a mom of two adhd kids, the idea about caffeine helping slow them down is correct. Her understanding that it was the fact it was diet did something is where my concern comes in. Basic science tells us if you have one upper (hyperactivity), and add another to it (caffeine), it can help in the very short term. No, it's not enough, or appropriate, but you would be surprised the number of educators who still rely on this when there is a melt down at school. "I had a rough day. I was not able to focus or concentrate, abs Miss Jones was awesome. She took me to the teacher's lounge, and gave me a cold Dr. Pepper (coke, mt dew, etc) to get my mind off my day, and being in there with her really helped. Mom, I really like Miss Jones.) The child can’t sleep so grandma decided to “treat” her with diet Mt. Dew! A 12 year old child that doesn’t even have a bed and is sleeping in the same RV bed as grandma. ( Grandma has COPD so does grandma sleep with a Cpap? That is complete speculation but those are really loud. )

Whew a lot of people in Appalachia live like that. While there might not be a hoard the living conditions are the same. There are still people without running water in their home. Will cost far too much to have it installed. there are people that live out west in the desert that also have to have water shipped in regularly. I think Grandma is overwhelmed and she means the best but unless she was actually going to step up it would not be a good fit. I think she might be scared of her son who seems negligent.

I wonder if grandma would have been less defensive & made less excuses if Carly's father hadn't been on screen or a part of the hearing. Her testimony is highly contradictory to her actions leading up to the hearing. Having no hot water for 2 years & bathing 'down the clubhouse' once or twice a week denotes neglect to me in this day & age. I couldn't imagine going through puberty & not being able to shower or bath unless I went out of the house to my grandma's local club, sheesh😟

Lord have mercy, I'm cringing in my very soul. I've homeschooled 4 kids between 2nd and 12th grade. This grandma is not... not... capable of homeschooling. I'm very, very open to exploring different ways of learning. One of my kids has severe OCD and ADD and homeschool was the only way I could get him to actually learn. I don't believe you need to have a teaching degree to HS but, I'm sorry, if you think DIET Mountain Dew is something to "give" a child who she believes has ADD because it does the "opposite"?! No.This is a big signal of her (in)capacity to teach. Having to take washcloth baths at her age, with what sounds like emotional issues, is really bad for her personal development and habits. It sounds like school was not working (it happens) so she took her out to HS- but realized she's not able to manage her, so she just took her to parks and stuff to get her out of the house. Loving her granddaughter doesn't mean she's a good caretaker.

This case, if things are indeed a they appear, breaks my heart. I don't think either Dad or Grandma are any better functioning than the child. Even if they possess a higher IQ than she, they are too close to the situation to even begin to see it clearly. Perspective seems to have been completely obscured by a "certainty" that just one more try will surely yield the desired result.

My son barely talked til 2.5. It wasnt because he couldn't, he's just an introvert. Hes always been the type to stand back and observe before he engages. Unfortunately, he has some speech issues, which hes been getting lessons for for 3yrs. That alone has caused other issues with reading and ELA. Which in turn has caused emotional issues. Its a tough road. Its kinda like the chixken or the egg. Does the disability cause the emotions or do the emotions cause the disability. And it takes a lot of time, effort, patience and trial and error to figure it all out. Were so lucky that his school is very involved and has been on top of helping him every way possible. This is what this little girl needs. Not to mention.... some parents/guardians need to know when they are out of their pay grade. If a child is going thru something that cannot be figured out in the home, its time to call in resources. I think some parents/guardians want to think they can solve it all, so they end up in a dire situation. We have to recognize when our babies need help we just dont know how to provide.

TLDR: My daughter has a speech and language disorder and delay and has behavioral issues as a result. Carly's are partially probably this but also being compounded by grandmas poor understanding as well as trauma. My oldest has autism and developmental delays one of her main ones is language. She didn't start talking in sentences until 5. She has a lot of behavioral issues that are rooted in an inability to be able to communicate her needs, wants, and sensory issues. I have a feeling this girl is probably in the same boat. But also has the genuine primal wound of the loss of her mother and the trauma related to her living situation. As well as trauma related to the father's incarceration and addiction. My daughter, we needed to learn to parent in a way that was based on connection but also based on her understanding of language and processing. If she doesn't understand something we take time for her to process, we rephrase something. We give her time to process and formulate her thoughts. If we don't do that she gets very frustrated and either shuts down (most of the time) or rarely becomes explosive because she is unable to understand what's going on or what's being asked of her. I can't imagine what it would feel like to be the grandmother in this situation without much guidance or understanding of her granddaughter's disability but also having to deal with her son's bad choices. I hope that everyone involved gets the therapy and education needed for emotional and intellectual growth.

This has been the most sensitive and kind comment on this thread. Thank you. Feeling for the child, and not burning grandma at the stake. I think the man in the orange jumpsuit probably abused (still would be doing so if he was out) his momma, and more than likely her husband(s) did as well. Neither grandma or dad should ever say anything to her about the case. But I did like the judge putting Harris in her place, telling her he's going to wait for a mental health professional, and not a lawyer to make mental health recommendations. I know she was only trying to do what her heart days this child needs, but she wouldn't like it if the judge allowed a mental health professional to argue a legal case. 🤔
