When I was a teacher and a kid was violent I didn't give the parents a choice. If they refused I'd call CPS immediately and they called the police. @@mjduffy618 They didn't even follow their own protocol to contact the school law enforcement officer assigned to the campus. What was explained later was Ethan claimed the drawings and writings were for a video game he was creating, and the parents said if they took him home he'd be left alone because they have to go back to work. So the child and the parents minimized the problem and convinced the admin he was just creating a new video game and there was nothing to worry about. As a mental health professional I would have erred on the side of caution and not just bought the story of him designing video games, even if the parents backed that story up. But I imagine whoever sent him back to class and didn't even check his backpack and locker, has had zero mental health or crisis experience. As a high school student I think that the talk of masks in this meeting is absurd. I understand that this meeting was supposed to talk about masks and whether we should keep them or not, but we have bigger fish to fry. One of our schools just got shot up and you are talking about masks? Are you kidding me? This is childish. All of the mask mandate talk is childish. Students do not care whether we need to wear a mask or not. We just want to go to school safely, that is all. And if that includes wearing a mask, then I would be more than willing.

You said exactly what I was going to post. Are the students aloud to have their say at these meetings? If so you might think about speaking your mind. You're too young to understand the overall significance of "masks." Masks are a symptom. The disease is far greater. Government mandates of masks with decades of past studies showing conclusively that they don't filter viral particles is not about just masking. Its to see how much push back they'll receive to this seemingly mild annoyance...and to see if any of the population is actually educated enough to resist or simply go along. Why have the numbers of the spread gone down during the mandates and up without them? These are actual numbers that you yourself could collect from varies independent sources on the internet. Don't have to take anyone's word. Have you actually (not Facebook) ever read scientific backed data showing the efficacy of masks? Have you researched for yourself any CoVid related materials. Do you have any Scientific supporting links to back anything you have said? Have you researched if there has ever been a mask mandate in the US before? What area of expertise do you have or what have you read that leads you to believe you're right and the scientific community is wrong? For over 20 years the schools and teachers, administration have been giving parents lip service and nothing is done our children are dying by the hands of other students, it’s time to hold them accountable, let them fear a lawsuit let them fear losing everything they have worked for their entire lives and maybe then they will do something about the dangers in our schools today after all they now hold the parents responsible for their children who skip school after 10 absences they send a letter stating we will have to appear before the court if it gets to 20 and we will be fined for it, when in fact it’s the schools who are letting this happen the teachers are letting the kids walk out of class not the parents the schools are letting the kids walk out the door and leave campus not the parents so where is their accountability in it, parents drop off their child at school thinking they are indeed attending classes the school staff are the ones letting kids get away with walking out yet they are never held accountable for it, so who’s fault would it be if a child was to walk out of a classroom and then out the door off the campus and was kidnapped and murdered is it the parent who dropped their child at the front door watching the child walk in or is it the staff who let them walk out. I know who I’d blame schools need to take responsibility and held accountable for their non actions throughout all these years or nothing will ever change.

Due to covid, we don’t know if the school board capped the number of parents allowed in that school board meeting. Many “public” meetings have limited the number of people allowed to attend. So it’s not necessarily that the parents don’t care.
@berrystraws2 жыл бұрын
Also, the public forum portion was “unscheduled” meaning the school board did not notify parents prior that they would have an opportunity to speak publicly and address the board. Since it was going to be broadcast online anyway for all parents to see, many parents probably felt they could watch it online and didn’t need to be there physically.

Wait--the school shooter was involved with the dead animals on campus? He had a count down clock? You were told by other kids? You must take homicidal ideation seriously. Searching ammunition and drawing death should have led to immediate suspension. His family should have been told to get clearance from a psychiatric evaluation before he could come back to school. The police should have been involved in the meetings. I work in this field, and you need to get your process together. I am so sorry this shooting happened and children died.

His parents were told to take him home from school and that they had 48 hours to get him professional help. The parents refused to take him home. I have never heard of that before where a parent refuses to take their kid home when the school has requested it.

@@marylinthicum678I never heard of it before either. Doesn't this district have a community crisis team? I am in VA. I have worked in 2 school districts here. They do CHINS immediately when children present like this. This gets a child in front of a judge quickly and a child hospitalized. This helps get the child into the evaluation process immediately. Most parents don't know what to do when their children present with a mental health issue especially the first time. Later, a community crisis team meets to develop plans for the child and get resources in place before the child is released from the hospital. Chins means child in need of supervision.

This board as in many don’t know what they doing. It’s about their paycheck. They try to silence people they make excuses or place blame so they can’t be held accountable. The faculty at the schools do what the school boards says. When my son in hs was bullied and choked. The dean said well it’s a he say he say. I ask for the resource officer and told him I want this kid arrested for assault. He said we only have your son saying it happened. As he spoke two girls came in and said they wiitnessed it. I was told they they were going to suspend him for three days. No , he’s being arrested! They did show up at lunch and handcuffed him in front of everyone. I just don’t get why I had to go that far.

Someone should tell that second mom this is just the way the world is now. People are subject to unlawful searches everyday from police officers .... It's really surprising they aren't doing it at this school. And people think mask mandates are a rights violation ... Rights violations are the American way ... search them kids .... but she should be commended for blaming the shooter and not anyone/rhing else ... i.e. bullying .... that excuse is played out now. These kids know exactly what their doing when they take a gun to school. That's like victim blaming.... and we tired of that.

Why do we treat kids like idiots? There is nothing damaging about the truth! I want my child to know there are crazy people out there! What’s wrong with clear backpacks? A few years from now those kids will have to bring clear bags to concerts and sports arenas-why are we parents afraid to let their kids know we have to use clear bags because there are crazy people who try and bring guns to school??? I’d rather my child be aware and cautious than believe they are 100% safe at school. Your kids aren’t safe anywhere but home and they need to know that so they can build a healthy relationship with reality. These sheltering parents aggravate me so much! Like what sort of fragile bubble child can’t handle a discussion about real threats?
