@@unrealone1 I worked on keeping the cost down with this design so I don't think you could go much larger than A3 in landscape orientation. The side to side axis can be increased substantially but the back and fourth in it's current design is not suitable for extending much.

Just finished a diy cnc pen plotter. I 3D printed my parts based loosely on Mr. Innovatives design. It was a lot of work to get everything dialed in. Your software instruction are the best. Although when using inkscape I had to use a scaling factor even though I was using mm units.

Thanks for the well made tutorial! Any thoughts on how to make this plotter without the need for a base, it would allow to write on bigger and thicker surface. Also are the motor strong enough to write vertical? For example I set up the machine on a wall and it can draw. My daughter room's need some more artwork :)
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Loïc. Goo question about making it without a base. I suppose for what you're suggesting you could attach it to a wooden frame instead of the board, but have the frame sit on the the topside of the printed 'feet' and screw in from below. This would then make the surface of the wall level with he drawing plane. Motor wise, I think it should be OK. Slow the movements down when you export the GCODE - that should help prevent any slipping of the timing belts. Most of the weight (the two stepper motors) is very central to the main machine linear rail on purpose to keep the weight on the extending arm to a minimum.

@BlackGeare
@BlackGeare 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I wanted to congratulate you on the project ... it's really crazy! I scrupulously followed the step-by-step video instructions, but I encountered 3 "problems": 1) Right / left swing of the pen (slight, but prevents small details); 2) Up / down swing of the Y when the servo clicks or in extension beyond 50%; 3) Using the square procedure only about half of the effective area is covered (225x250mm). The $ H procedure is successful. I wanted to understand if the first 2 points are normal or not and how to solve point 3. Thanks a lot and congratulations again.
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words BlackGeare, I'm glad to hear you managed to follow my instructions. :) To answer your points: 1) This can be reduced by having less distance between the 3D printed pen slider and the mount it is on. Though too closes and it will not slide freely. A better solution is to mount the pen slider on two small steel rods. This would almost eliminate it but I one of my main design goals was to limit cost and this would have required more steel rod and an additional linear bearing. 2) This is something that has become more apparent to me since I published the design. Where the teeth catch the the main slider you could take the 90 degree edge of with some sand paper and make it more of a radius. As for the extension, this is another cost management choice. Ideally we would have to linear rails - one each side of the print area but this would certainly be a much bigger cost. To make up for this movement at full extension I designed the pen part so it can rise and fall by itself to compensate for this. A slight trade of win accuracy for a big cost saving. 3) To increase the printable area of the machine if it physically is able to travel further on each axis just create a larger document size in Inkscape. I hope these points help. Lewis
@BlackGeare
@BlackGeare 3 жыл бұрын
@@DIYMachines Thanks a lot for the answer. I fully understand the need to reduce costs and believe that the project itself is still great. To mitigate point 2 I have reduced the angle to 35 degrees, but I think the main problem is due to the "speed" of the servo movement (too lightning-fast click). For point 3 is it better to have the origin in the corner (from $ H) or in the center of the print area?

Hi everybody, I built (thanks to this amazing tutorial, a big thank you!), this machine. The machine works, I could test it with drawings in .gcode format but the problem is that the Inkscape extension to generate this famous gcode does not work. After many attempts, python updates and other manipulations, this extension of Inkscape does not work because the lxml is not up to date and it is impossible for me to update it. - Do you know what other software could replace Inkscape? - Or if by any chance it is possible that the machine works with another file type than gcode? I am using an iPad Pro to create the drawings and vectorise them. I was thinking of creating the drawings on ipad and then sending them to a mac book pro in inkscape to change the file type but maybe there is an app that allows saving to the correct format directly from an ipad? If you have any clues it would be a great relief for me. I think I've reached the end of my skills in this area... I thank you in advance for your precious help. I wish you a lovely evening, L.M

Hi, great videos. I’m nearly done building this but have a couple of issues. 1 noisy steppers and 2 I have had to set the grbl configuration to $100=5.00 x, step/mm) $101=5.00 (y, step/mm) to stop the x and y trying to go outside the limits of the drawing area, they just fly off at speed! Got to be a config issue but not sure where to start. I have 1.8degree 200step motors.

Hello, and thank you. First question, which stepper motor drivers are you using? You are correct to adjust $100 and $101 based on your machine. Ideally have it draw a 10cm square and adjust this values up or down until what it draws is actually 10cm's square. Are you zeroing out your axis after homing the machine - if not this is like to cause it fly of at speed and make an uncomfortable noise. Check here in the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqTGfH9-r5xqgsk. After zeroing out the co-ordinates in the top right of Chillipeppr should all read 0.

@@DIYMachines many thanks for the reply. I’m zeroing manually at the moment as I don’t have the end stops installed yet. I’m zeroing. In the correct place though! I’m using DRV8825 and the CNC shield Is set to full step (no jumpers) if that is relevant. I’m drawing a box and it is just about the correct size. This appear to be working ok , just the steppers are noisy and I’m Puzzled why I need to change the vales in the config file. (I’m using UGS btw)

So be grateful for your tutorial. The question is how to make a multicolored painting, change the pen after one layer finished?
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly that. I also recommend rehoming after changing the pen between layers jut in case you may have jogged any of the axis whilst changing the pen. Rehoming is very quick one-click action. :)

Hi, now I made some drawings on that machine. Some comments what I notieced: Drawing in incscape is difficult for me. Did use a wacom tablet to copy a printed drawing to incscape. When I draw not only a single stroke but more back and forth with the pen then sometimes the GBRL extension makes a round circle out of it. Have to find a workaround. Or do only single strokes. Some odd pehenomena is, that I draw some freehand lines and the machine via Gcode does exactly like I did with the pen. Same slow downs. But have to experiment a bit to confirm that behaviour. Maybe I have to write a simple programme to feed the gcode to the machine. Then I can feed line after line under my control and when I want to change the pen then I can simply stop the drawing and change pen. Or redraw some lines. In case the pen did not work.

Couldn't get it to work because it kept slamming into the side with the X axis motor. Then it occurred to me that the build plane is wrong. At 12:39 you say to set the width and height to 225 and 250 (in millimeter) respectfully. However the physical print area it only 30x30. Once adjusted it was fine.

Could you design one that is modular? As in, be able to draw on larger surface areas?
@DIYMachines

You can increase the width without too much trouble, but the axis which holds the pen was never designed to be much longer. A big goal of this project was to keep costs down. I may make a larger version in the future but could not say when. Sorry.
