Something I remembered, it's probably for you, CHOMP is a Dark type attack move. Baby Pokes learn it at Level 1/2 at their first level up. It's dark because it's a defensive move because the baby poke was attacked and didn't learn it's elemental move naturally. This may be part of the MISSINGNO glitch that seems self Actuated ai-ish

Nothing so specific, fancy or intended. Just how programs work. When a program runs, it gets loaded into memory, or something similar. And everything from there is done by using references. Missingno (literally Missing number), in all games, is just and invalid reference to memory and the result is just dependent on how the developers coded the game to handle that invalid reference (hint, in the first games, there was no error checking for most things) In Gen 1 it was caused a invalid reference to a memory location when it attempted to grab the sprite to draw on screen (this is what caused the huge load time, messed up appearance and also an overwrite of hall of fame data, since that is stored in memory next to the image buffer and would get overwritten by the invalid sprite data) It was caused by any attempt to grab an ID not assigned a proper sprite memory location. There's actually many of these IDs in the games code, all assigned to pokedex num 0 and the same memory reference for the sprite. the other odd glitch pokemon functioned the same way, they're just leftover code but had memory IDs for sprites or pointed elsewhere and their name often contained something other than 'MISSINGNO.') In later gens, missingno is similar, it's still just an invalid reference resulting in weird memory access that causes strange things to appear on screen and be assigned weirdly. And the reason for most of what you see, like the rather consistent bulbasaur and other strange things like a giratina cry is just basic error handling.

I'm surprised that Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee didn't make it appear at all as a standard encounter. After all, every other gen just used a different sprite or default icon. Would have been amusing to see a floating pokeball icon approach you in the overworld, but thought it would just 'disguise' it as the sprite of a different pokemon.

Concerning the insanely low stats on later gen Missingnos: It looks like the base stats are defaulting to 0, resulting in HP as low as 10+Level, and other stats as low as 5*Nature. I'm assuming that the numbers are a little higher than minimum because the game still generates IVs for it on spawn like normal. It learns no moves because the game grabs the moveset list based on the Pokémon's index number, and that number has no programmed list.

I used an Action Replay way back when on my Diamond/Platinum games. When you use the "run anywhere" cheat and run on the water in certain areas it spawns a Missingno because the game doesn't know what to spawn. Could you eventually try to catch one of the USUM exclusive Ultra Beasts in SM, then send it over to USUM through Pokémon Bank? They're technically from the same generation, but do not exist in SM, would be interesting if it's something different or a repeat of the Rotom/Master Ball/Bulbasaur Gumshoos.

"An exception occured" This just screams C++ right there! :D Lovely. FYI: An exception is basically a programs way of letting the programmer now that something out of the norm happened - it could be an error, or it could be a malfunction. Ironically, you "catch" exceptions. In C++, this may look like this (simplified, because KZbin comments dont really do code...): try { someFunction(); } catch(exception e) { ... } "e" is just a placeholder for the variable holding your exception - it could have any name. The preceeding "exception" is just the basic type of exception and programs may develop their own exceptions. To cause one of your own, you throw them: throw exception("error message or details"); So... this game probably had no idea how to handle entry 0, which also can be treated as a NULL pointer, thus possibly pointing out of bounds in an array of pokemon, making the programm end up trying to access data thats simply not there. Since the animation plays, I am expecting that the program was trying to generate an encounter off some basic information about Pokemon #0 - but since there was no data found as a base to use, an exception was thrown instead. And since this specific case was never intended to happen, the programmers never actually implemented a failsafe/sanity check. So it just falls right through, the exception is not caught and the game crashes. MissingNo once again does what MissingNo does =)
