12:00 It's funny how he mentioned two things just a sentence or two apart that I had a question or knowledge with. Hot pink works great for finding tools on the ground. As a telephone line repairman and fiber optic technician I would paint ALL my tools with a splotch of hot pink. Nobody ever stole them and if I dropped them in any sort of brush they were always really easy to locate. The question I've been wondering about is how do bees react when a lawnmower is used in close proximity to their hive? Do they get angry and attack?

Dr. Z says: Honey bees don't necessarily react to loud noises, but may be disturbed by vibrations from excessive use if equipment in their vicinity. Using a push mower near bees has the potential to disturb them (making them defensive). Use common sense to minimize disturbing your bee colonies. Be sure the discharge chute if facing away from the hive on each pass, rather than blowing air and cut grass towards the hive entrance. Mow late in the afternoon when there are fewer bees flying in and out, rather than more active times in late morning on warm days. Depending on the particular apiary arrangement, mow in several quick passes, getting as close as you dare, and come back with a weed eater while wearing your bee veil, just in case. You might also consider putting down a neat layer of layer mulch or pine needles under and around the hives to keep grass from growing up where it is difficult to mow close to the hives.

@@AginArk Thank you. That helps alot. This will be my first year and I already have two NUCS ordered. My hives and stands are built and placed and just waiting for the NUCS to arrive. I like the mulch idea and I think I will do it. Thank you again from the Oregon coast.
