This is Part 3 of our 3 Part series. The major take away here is the experimental presprout method in Part 2 was a resounding success. These corms were ready to plant in half the time in 8-10 days!
In this video we discuss how we planted the pre-sprouted anemone corms in our crate system. We also discuss how we fertilize and what spacing we use on the corms.

I've used this method and it works brilliantly. Isn't it great to share growing tips across the world! I think the clever grower who sent you this method was Cel Robertson of Forever Green Flower Co over here in the UK. Cel is a member of Flowers From The Farm [our ASCFG equivalent] and we're so lucky to have her, and other knowledgeable members, sharing their knowledge. Thank you Bare Mountain for your generosity with help ... flower farmers are such nice people.

Thanks for the kind words. It was indeed a tip from Forever Green Flower Co. We certainly believe in open access to ever improving techniques and are much appreciative of Cel's post on Instagram that tipped us off to this technique

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge. Your channel is my new favorite youtube channel, and I am loving your videos. They are very informative, and I am learning a lot, since we plan to have a farm, hopefully in a few years, and I need to start learning as much as I can about the cut flower industry. I think your videos are great, because not only are they informative as mentioned before, but you have a great way to explain what you do, what has worked for you, and tips. Thank you again, and may your crops be amazing in the next season.

I appreciate the info. Just getting started into cut flowers as a hobby grower, but we have a little acreage we could expand if there is a market and my skills can deliver results. This channel is helping me learn more to be better prepared! I ordered dahlias and ranunculus for the first time. Starting small but hopeful! We are in Eastern Oregon.

What is the benefit to pre-sprouting them in a different tray, as opposed to just sprouting them in the crate, and removing the step of transplanting them?

How did the anemones that were left in the crates perform? Do you pull and reuse corms? If so, how long will they continue producing? (PS - thanks for all this info…so helpful to new farmers 🌸💗)

Hi @Elaine Elmore Old anemone corms left in the crates are sort of a hit or miss in terms of performance in the next year. We have tried numerous times to see if we could reuse corms from a prior season and have found that its better to buy new. Reused corms sometimes hide bacterial or fungal infections that surface after the corms germinate and the plants for the most part fail to thrive and have disease problems. Clean stock every year gives more consistent results. would have loved to be able to keep using the same planting stock but it just wasn't worth it.

You’re videos are FABULOUS! Thank you! I’m on zone 9b and just received my 1st order of anemones...I’m reading in Armitages book to vernalize them for 4-6 hrs post 4hr soak pre presprout... Curious your opinion?!?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Elaine Elmore I went back to look at that. It seems the vernalization period is at a temp between 41-50F for 4-5 weeks. We achieve this by planting our Anemones in late October keeping them cool in this range as they vegetatively grow and begin blooming for us in late January. So if the timing is right with winter nature takes care of it for us. However zone 9B sounds like San Diego😉 so perhaps chilling them for this period may be the right thing to do.

Curious if you’re still soaking anemones 12hrs? Also still same presprout method? Also are both ranunculus and anemone 20/21 per crate? How did the overwinter trial work out?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Elaine Elmore We no longer soak anemones that long. we typically soak using an aquarium bubbler for 2-4 hrs until plump. we have dropped the density of anemones to 15 per crate (3 rows of 5). This gives us better airflow and the chance to get more growth in the plants. We have never planted ranunculus in the crates. You can , but we aren't sure how many per crate and the type of ranunculus Hanoi versus La Belle may change the density significantly. To make a guess for La Belle types I would use density of maybe 10, larger corms I would think would lower the number. Some of these plants can get large and you need to take that into account. You can catch our most recent video on Anemones at kzbin.info/www/bejne/ravYon2woJapjbs and use the time stamp in the description to get to your question on pre-soaking.

Can I grow my ranunculus in crates like you do with your anemones? I live in zone 3 and can't plant them outside early enough. Thank you for all your wonder tips!
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can. We have not done it personally but have seen others grow them in crates. Don't crowd them, maybe 10 corms per crate. They need good air circulation. Good luck 🤞 Thanks for watching ☺️

Your video has been a great help. My first attempt and have had success so far with 3-4" plants. Wondering if some basic Miracle grow would be beneficial at this point. They are growing in decent potting soil.

Hi Michelle, We are using organic practices and tend to fertilize using 1 tsp of fish hydroslate and 1 tsp sea kelp extract per gal of water weekly until blooms start. I'm not sure but the nitrogen/phosphorous levels might be too high and encourage too much rapid vegetative growth. This can look great but will encourage aphids or other types of critters. Try to keep the NPK low dosage but more frequent.

Thank you so much for these videos! Do you put cardboard or newspaper in the bottom of the crate?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @EM Elbers Years ago we used to use a layer of newspaper in the crates. As time as gone on we have found that keeping the crates with at least 25% good compost by volume keeps enough biology in them that very little soil is lost through the bottoms or sides so we stopped lining them. However, the paper or cardboard certainly works well if you want to be double certain.

How deep are your crates? Is there a minimum depth? Thank you
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 2 жыл бұрын
The Crate dimensions are 9" Deep, 16" wide, 22" Long. We use the 9" instead of the more common 6" depth for better root growth.

Any reason why you couldn't use a cooler? Is it too cold? Or do they dry out too quickly? We don't have a root cellar, so just wondering about alternatives to this for pre-sprouting
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 6 жыл бұрын
Jig-Bee Flower Farm We tried the cooler one year set at 40F and we found the presprout process was way slower. I think you can use the cooler with a temp closer to 50-55F and get great results.

If not dug when summer temp starts to rise . would it rot the corms of anemone
@BareMtnFarm

We let the corms and crates dry out which puts the corm into dormancy. we do get some rot but not too much.

So I am curious... how did the anemones on the left work out? did you have them blooming in december?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Katie; Ok, sorry for being tardy on the response. Our experience this year has led us to conclude that saving the corms and replanting(or leaving them in place) didn't increase yields. In fact we had more corm losses due to poor germination on the saved corms. I think form this point forward we will be purchasing new corms. Its worth the money in saved time and consistent yields.
