You do not need to mark the 2 pieces for "alignment". I know Raj has put that in his instructions but someone that has spoken with him in person has confirmed it is not necessary.
@50sKid3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I didn’t think it was really necessary either as I didn’t see balance marks on the inner piston

So one of the two vanos I took apart without marking The other one I have not taken apart yet I am understanding that this should not be a problem.

I didnt bother marking them. Its easy to see how the system works. And its obvious that the alignment of the outer and inner units doesnt make any difference.

Dude!! this is awesome!! the only other video i have seen anyone rebuilding this system was a guy who spent about an hour cleaning oil and didn't explain anything in a way that makes sense. I am super happy you did this. I have all my parts but the chains, and I feel really confident rebuilding the vanos now. Thank you Thank you!!

Nice to see you still doing informative BMW videos. We all highly appreciate the amount of time, dedication, and effort you put into these videos! You and NathansDIY have helped me immensely with my BMW’s and sparked my hatred for them even more which is leading to me buying more of them 😆 Also, this is the best and most comprehensive guide on M62 VANOS on KZbin. Congrats. Thank you for running through how easy it is to keep M62’s up and going

I'm knee deep into an E38/M62 restoration myself. Went and bought 2 more used vanos sprockets just in case I screwed up repacking the first set. Been stockpiling parts for that car all winter.

Thank you for this guide. It was perfect. I just completed this. I did manage to damage one of the silicone rings (at the bend). A few things that helped me with the Vanos rebuild: I stuffed a short piece of 1/4" rubber tubing under the washer which kept the piston extended and freed up my hand to work on the rings. I cut some pieces of 14 GA insulated wire and bent it into about 1" u-shapes which I used to hold the o-ring and silicone ring in place as I worked it into and around the groove. I filed the sides of my picks down which improved working them within the narrow slot. I also filed the sharp pick points slightly to reduce the risk of tearing the rings. I bent and filed a small paper clip to carefully pull up on the rings. Lastly I found I didn't need to fold the silicone ring but was able to work most of it into the groove and then carefully work the bottom of the ring with my thumb and the flat side of a small screwdriver to get it to go in.

Thanks 50sKid for adding this video. This is so much more involved than I could imagine. Nothing like the E46 duel vanos.

Thank you for deciphering the convoluted instructions and crating this video. The combination of the obscure photo placement and diction on the website caused me to give up and just scroll through the photos alone. Using the term “extra” to describe the instructions is putting it lightly 🤣

15:20 "Guide it into the groove while you're putting it in. And that's the real key, that's the trick to this whole job. Remember to keep this piston up, like this, and we just start feeding it into the groove..... because that's the best way.... that I found to do this." LOL

@@50sKid I just did the vanos rebuild on my 2000 540 6spd last sept noisy vanos and sluggish below 3k rpm. Did it with your videos and also skipped the distribution block and it’s seals as that is for pre99/09 cars. went alright, noise was gone but still slow on the low end, now after winter I decided to replace vanos solenoid check valves with hopes of improvement and when undoing bank 2 solenoid 10mm of the threads on the distribution block snapped off and came out with the solenoid ruining the distr block So I now have to do this all again! BUT LOW AND BEHOLD! Just made clear that my car was made 99/07 200k miles witch makes sense why it was still sluggish if I did not fix those seals Now I’ll just get the coated housings and do all guides and remaining seals and finally get to enjoy the torque it’s supposed to have It actually feels good just to have figured my problem out even tho I could have prevented doing it all all over again

Any concern with the Teflon seal getting pushed down/ unseated when pushing the piston back in? Just got mine pushed in and wondering if I should take it back out to confirm it’s still seated or just run it.

Do you to take everything appart to do the vanos rebuild only? Or is it just sufficient to pull the top timing covers only?
@mike325ci2 жыл бұрын
Just the upper timing cover will give you sufficient access to the vanos units if that's all you are doing - no need to remove the lower timing cover (which requires removal of A LOT more things and accessories attached to block). He is doing it along with the whole timing chain and guide job, and doing the VANOS rebuild since he's "already in there."

Hey 50 s kid my e46 got code for p1083 , my pcv house cracked and I slide a large hose that snug in and held the line in place didn’t notice any leaks besides oil around the area . I’m guessing that why my car throws on that code ? I have replaced top intake boot and lower one looks okay 👌 no tears. Any advice would be helpful thanks 😊

I’m looking at getting the vanos rebuilt on my X5 4.4. They are making a knocking noise (all my research leads me to believe that’s the cause anyway) when the engine gets warm. I’m tempted to do the job myself but I need to get the GAS timing tool as I don’t fancy using the China tool.. Did this help make the engine run really quiet?

Do you have a good oil filter, with a check valve in it? It sounds like your oil pressure drains back when it sits. Use a Mahle, Bosch or like, not Phram

is the VANOS rebuild a "one-time" fix, as we are permanently deforming the timing wheel? In other words, can I redo this entire procedure after it already had it done before? Much appreciated.

Hey 50’s kid. Love your videos. I rebuilt my n42 following your n46 instructions a while back. I’m wondering if there is a kit to rebuild the vanos on the n62 and if it is worth doing while I replace guides and valve stem seals? I’m getting codes for exhaust camshaft position sensors on bank one and two bit have replaced all four sensors. Also I replaced eccentric shaft sensors, crankshaft sensor and vanos seals. Car is misfiring and only wants to start when cold. I’m being told timing has likely jumped by people in the forums so I will have to go back in and look.
@LynxStarAuto2 жыл бұрын
The VANOS on N62's are not as problematic. On those what fails most is the solenoids. It has 4 of them (one for each sprocket), and they are super easy to replace, but pricey. Easiest test you can do is swap them around and see if the fault follows the solenoid.
@preachercharleshadeniii37642 жыл бұрын
@@LynxStarAuto Will a bad VANOS let the CAM turn and cause the car jump out of time? The VANOS CAM on the passenger's side jumps ahead of the other CAM while the CAMs on the driver's side stay in time with each other.
