I find Michael Levin's take on collective consciousness of cells helpful and more approachable than a pure panpsychist approach. The difference between (brains or bodies) and (tables or chairs) is that brains are made of functioning cells, which share a virtual membrane of subjectivity that is responsive to nuanced environmental influences at the biological layer, while tables and chairs are typically made of non-biological matter that only responds to blunt environmental influences at the physics layer. Carlos Farias's interview with Levin on the Computational Boundary of the Self is a really good overview of this notion.

Galen brilliance, combination problem solved, if it is all one endless field vibing, combining is no longer the right metaphor Richard! 🤪

I guess Richard's problem is that he can't conceive of anything physical that goes beyond billiard balls bobbing into each other. Although I am not a fan of the 'Panpsychism' terminology, which I find rather confused at times, I find Strawson's main argument that there is no good reason to believe that conscious experience is not real/not a physical phenomenon quite convincing. He also rightly points out the absurd position of people who when faced with the failure of mechanistic accounts of consciousness deny the existence of conscious experience, presumably because it clashes with their preferred conception of physical reality.

I may have a lot of problems, but that is definitely not one of them!

OK maybe the billiard balls were a bit below the belt😅- but the point stands@@onemorebrown

Every expert on consciousness says "conchiness" at some point, some of them frequently, gotcha Galen.

Why don't panpsychists ever talk about Schopenhauer when trying to find a solution to the combination problem? Something like nature is fundamentally made of this blind arbitrary will manifesting as matter, and when the matter is combined in ways that represent other things the will is channelled into what we call consciousness.

I am really concerned about Dennett's insistence on trying to ignore the suffering caused by Putin's war crimes, this illusionism about mind needs to stop now!
