Part 4 of our South African dream: Virginia Airport Durban FAVG to Bethlehem Airport FABM

This is the forth video in a series of 9 videos about our flying adventure in South Africa. We rented a Sling 2 at the Johannesburg Flying Academy (JFA) at Panorama airfield and flew around South Africa in 12 days. It was an unforgettable experience.
This video will start were number 3 ended: Virginia Airport Durban. Due to bad weather over Durban we got stuck there for 2 days. We found a "gap" of 2 hours to escape the bad weather. We took off at Virginia Airport Durban, located under the TMA of King Shaka Durban International Airport. ATC voice recording has been added to this video. Due to low cloud ceiling we had to contact King Shaka to fly through their TMA. Then we had a long climb to 11.500ft to cross the great escarpment. Because of a lot of head winds and density altitude the climb out took much longer than planned.
We stayed at the Cheetau Lodge in Bethlehem.

Lange vlucht vol uitdagingen, de zwaarste van de hele trip! De lodge was hierna een welgekomen plaats om te relaxen!

That was quite a challenging flight. Well done. More great views of your departure from Virginia. I assume that you had to land on the grass runway because of the wind direction? I have never visited Bethlehem, but the accommodation and the wildlife were probably just what you both needed.

This was the most challenging flight of the entire trip. Getting away from Durban due to low clouds and on the other hand the strong head wind and downdrafts to pass the Great Escarpment. The lodge was a nice place to rest after this challenging flight. Not planned and not many opportunities in Bethlehem but certainly enjoyed our stay there!
