I usually top up to the exact fare needed for my last trip in country so I minimise having money in the digital Suica. I had been using since 2017.

You topped up with exact fare through Apple Pay? It looks like 1000 yen minimum to load the mobile Suica with Apple Pay and then after that you can manually enter say 150 yen or 122 yen?

@@thomasgee7675 yes you can top up small amounts. That's what I could do.

@@thomasgee7675 1000 yen min if you're adding the card to the wallet for the first time. After that you can add any amount even just 1 yen. I've also added the exact fare amount from what Google Maps showed me for my last train trip to Haneda Airport.

When your phone runs out of battery power, it goes into this very low power sleep state. It keeps very basic functions working, including certain “Find My” functions and transit cards. That way, you don’t get stranded and someone can locate your device if you’re lost and out of power. If you power it fully down, then it doesn’t leave those functions running.

Thanks for the video! Can you use your digital Suica card for multiple passengers on the same journey? If I was traveling with my child can I tap the card twice in the same entry stall for us to both enter using the same card? Or does each passenger need their own suica card? Thank you!

You’ll need a different fare for every passenger - whether that be a different IC card, digital IC card, or physical ticket purchased at the station

Why not just use the JR pass for the whole trip? Whats the different between JR Pass and Suica card. As I know JR pass provide unlimited trip.
@LudicrousFeed8 ай бұрын
The JR pass only covers certain train lines and some metro lines … but not the numerous other subway lines. Hence this is where the Suica or Pasmo or other cash cards come in handy. Good also for buying food and drink from selected stores and vending machines that accept them
@jashsu4 ай бұрын
Ever since the nationwide rail pass price increased in Oct 2023 it has generally not been very cost effective unless you plan on taking multiple roundtrip shinkansen rides on your trip. Most tourists don't do this (probably at most a single roundtrip Kanto Kansai). Having to take time out of your trip to do pass conversion and handle paper tickets is also annoying. Finally as Ludicrous mentioned, subways and non-JR lines are not covered by rail pass.

What did you do to your right thumb Tom? Looks like it was hit by a hammer, doing some home renos recently? Good to know about the best way to purchase stuff with is to use the credit card plus means you don't get stuck with an IC card when you return with money you can't get returned as some people may not go back either ever or perhaps for a very long time.

I think i fucked up by putting my pasmo and suica on the same phone. Anyone have any experience with this and does it affect using the trains? I can't imagine how it can tell which card to use when tapping in/out etc.
@LudicrousFeed5 ай бұрын
Hmm you’d have to ensure you have the same IC card showing for the trip on entry/exit … 🤔

Only one e-money transit card (Suica, Pasmo, icoca) can be set as the Express Mode card. That will be the one that is used if you tap your phone without unlocking.

it works only if your phone dies off not if u turn it off and only for a few hours after it died off also you have to have an Iphone 12 or newer if i remember well.
@archie4oz11 ай бұрын
It’s iPhone 11 or later (basically any iPhone with Secure Enclave 2.0), and the power reserve is 5 hours. Many Android phones will work powered off (I’ve done I with Galaxy and Xperia phones), as the secure element runs independently from the application OS, and can be powered by the ticket gate (just like a physical card).
@mr.jellyfish55447 ай бұрын
But there is a difference between a phone getting purposely turned off and out of battery. If the phones battery is depleted, there is still enough juice for it to work while battery is depleted. There are a;ready videos on KZbin proving this. Just look up “Suica Power reserve” videos on this.
