Sorry, I am unable to answer all of your questions regarding the ICOCA card or about transportation in Japan. Because I do not understand those services in detail and my information is probably the same as what you can get from a Google search. Also, such information may be updated, so I don't want to leave it in the comments section. There are often staff at the ticket machines in Kyoto station who can explain things to you. And if you follow the directions of the ticket machine, it is not difficult to make a purchase; with an ICOCA card, you can take any major transportation system in Japan, especially in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, and you can also use SUICA or PASMO bought in other areas in Kyoto without any problem. Don't worry too much and relax.

Thank you for the information. My wife and I will be traveling to Japan in December and this helps us tremendously. One question though, can the Icoca card be used in Tokyo, Kanazawa and Osaka? Many videos aren’t that clear as to the overall coverage of these IC cards and I just want to make sure.

Yes, ICOCA card can be used in Tokyo and Osaka. About Kanazawa, I think if you are t taking buses in the city, it may not be supported. It depends on the bus company. Please bring some coins for just in case!

i wish japan had more unity... one card for everything. why 5? and why are some cards not working in some places? the thing that scares me most about traveling through japan... from north to south at least, is what card is working for me? do i need to buy a ticket? is the card alone sufficient? earlier people hyped the JR pass but then again even the JR pass which is now way overpriced is not valid for every vehicle. but i guess those are tourists-only troubles... native japanese will probably not have those issues as they're using primarily the same route and move in the same region where regional cards and tickets will always be valid .... maybe...
