Part I: High-Res Images of Cities at Night (from ISS)

City lights broadcast our existence into the night of space. Imagine how the Earth will look to astronauts in a century's time or longer? These images are incredibly difficult to take from a spacecraft traveling along at almost 28,000 kilometers per hour. The images are held at NASA's Johnson Space Center in a special archive for astronaut photography. Watch for the great cities of Beijing, Istanbul, Melbourne, Montreal, London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Buenos Aires, Brasilia (one of our favorites), and more.

Dreamed of, until they, (some of whom are us) advanced enough to move out into space. Now "we, they, us" come to visit to make sure the idiots up the top at the moment don't kill us all.

The population figures are inconsistent. In some cases (like London or Istanbul), the metropolitan population was given, but in most cases only the population of the city proper was given, while the picture showed the whole or most of the metropolitan area. Buenos Aires, Los Angeles and Tokyo, for example, have far more people in the area shown than the figures on the screen. As for your favorite, Brasília, it's a very unusual city and the population given includes far-away "satellite cities" as they are called. The area shown has probably about 1 million people.

And why avoid sub-Saharan Africa? Cape Town looks incredible from space with Table Mountain in the middle, the Cape peninsula southwards and the indentation of False Bay. One of the more geographically contorted cities in the world.

on 00:23 France is written on the border of Belgium and Holland.. the only bright light from France is coming from Lille France the rest (brightest) is Belgium cause even the smallest roads are lightened when dark. that's why you can even see the contours of the country and it's a more orange light (streetlights)

i need to travel for a decent night sky. and here in munich most street lights illuminate anything and everything up to the 3rd floor, not just the streets, so not only can i not see many stars, i can also read newspaper at the window all night. getting a pellet gun to shoot them down is a thought that crosses my mind maybe once every week. i hope one day people will take light pollution seriously. also, making lighting more efficient and rational to save energy can be combined with it.

i think it looks beautiful! all those people complaining that it looks like a growing cancer should just remove themselves from being part of the problem. altho i agree that light-pollution is not favourable i must say it gives you the feeling that somebody is home. this place is inhabited by (more or less) intelligent beings. as long as it never looks like the vision at the end and you can still find dark places to gaze at the night sky, i am fine with it.

I hope that future astronauts do NOT see it like it was at the end there. I really hope that in that distant future we will have learned to utilize light better. And realize that shooting it up into the sky, everywhere like that, is pointless and detrimental to how we see our night sky. Light pollution really sucks when you live in or near a city.
