Well thought out, concisely presented. Two iconic brands, Disney and Coca Cola have turned alot of collectors off with their politics. So even if your collectible stays culturally relevant, they can decrease in value based on a failing mothership.

I'm dipping my feet into silver coins.. coming from a high-end collectibles background. They have some 2020 MS70 silver dollars going for $50, not sure if these will go up in value.. but I like the idea of owning pure silver (or 90%).

Again. Great video with a great lesson. People shouldn't get into collecting things they aren't interested in. And I also believe a lot of today's collectibles aren't going to be as valuable in the future, because the driving force behind the value of most pop culture collectibles is nostalgia, and today the people who buys limited edition this and that are 20-30 year old people. And when three quarters of items bought remains sealed somewhere it's not gonna be hard to find in the future. Exactly why I don't understand how Funko collectors/investors don't see that Funko is whack.

Great video Shawn! I tried getting into coins but I find it too sophisticated and technical for my liking. However I have found a new love for Ancient Coin collecting. I feel that the historical significance of ancient legends, such as Julies Caesar and Alexander the Great, has more appeal to pop-culture collectors such as myself. It is also a more speculative market being new in the grading game (ie. less "boring") Ps. I'm looking forward to next week's video on CAC stickers on graded coins. This has a very similar controversy in the comic book grading realm with CVA stickers on CGC books. I would love to hear your opinion on the difference and/or similarities between CAC for coins and CVA comic books.

Looking forward to the video on vinyl records. It's not something I'd want to get into, but it's an interesting collecting category, fraught with all kinds of dangers (damaged/warped records, corners dinged in shipping, reissues that are better (or worse) than the originals, changes in musical tastes over time, etc.)

Hey there! Not sure if you'll see this comment but I was curious on your thoughts on graded limited edition modern coins? Obviously I'd assume that vintage and historical coins would hold a premium, but are modern limited edition high grade coins at all investable? I'm asking this as someone who honestly knows next to nothing about coins but recently purchased a few silver coins that were made recently (around 2017-2018). I was just curious if coins like these tend to at least hold their value? If not it's okay since I'm buying them as more of a collection piece just because I appreciate how they look, but I was just wondering if you had any opinions on this subject. Thanks!

Modern coins like what you are describing are best avoided for investment, unless you are getting them a little over spot price in relation to their previous metal content. Hope that helps answer your question.

Could you ever see very early first print white clamshell Disney VHS tapes becoming collectable like first edition books?

Absolutely not. Those values you see online are not accurate, they are the subject of numerous click bait articles. There is very little collectibility there.

Not that interested in coins and stanky old furniture (im one of them vidyagame people) but these little excursions on how different collector markets work are nonetheless interesting. Also now it seems obvious but i never really tought about the cultural relevance aspect (blinded by passion as you said), gotta thank you on educating me on that. Altho i do think current/last gen (as considered in 2020) stuff can potentially hold up abit better than Atari and such since its not just a bunch of bleeping and blooping abstract pixels and might still be playable/collectable in 20 years - but who knows :P Anyways thank you for making these videos :)

could it not be argued that the average age of coin collectors is 50+ and that as the next generation grows, they may have zero interest in these pieces, and with that, we could see a down turn on the prices. Especially as the serious die hard collectors die off and we see the markets get flooded with product. Would love your thoughts.
@ReservedInvestments
@ReservedInvestments 4 жыл бұрын
Nope, because coin collecting is growing, not dying. Collectors are discovering it at a later age because the cost and barrier to entry is very high.

@@ReservedInvestments would you be open to making a video outlining coins a new collector myself should consider for putting away for 10-20-30 years. Maybe where the price point could be more accessible now but have larger long term potential?? Do you feel the antique market, comic market, stamp markets are growing or shrinking?? I run a reseller channel and would love your personal insight, thanks for responding, im workin my way through all of your videos,. Consider a patreon, id support you.

I think a lot of markets in the antiques and collectibles trade are in a state of change. Everyone thinks they can make money over the short term, which is what is driving up speculative markets like vintage video games, Pokemon, and MTG. Yet, slow and steady always wins the race. I know very few multimillionaires who are preserving wealth by investing in Pokemon cards, or graded video games. I know more than a few who are buying rare coins and high end art. The antiques and collectibles market is always in flux. Change is the only constant. Comic books published after 1975 are extremely speculative. If I hear one more person tell me that Amazing Spider-Man 300 is a great ‘investment’ I’m going to scream. Only third party grading can save the stamp collecting market, and luckily, market manipulators are making that happen. The antiques market much like coins, goes in cycles. Collectibles do not. If we were having this conversation in the 1980’s some would be arguing that Cabbage Patch Kids are going to be the next ‘big thing.’ Hope that helps clarify...

@@ReservedInvestments It definitely does. Id genuinely love to have you on my show sometime to talk about investing, you seem to be a wealth of knowledge. I see speculative investing the same way i see day trading personally. I think if you are willing to put in the work, and run many short term gains one after the next after the next, you can get similar if not far larger gains over time, however in exchange for more work. Thanks again for the time. Cheers

Over 4000 is a lot to pay for a coin with a pop of 93 coins at that grade, CAC or not. There are MUCH better valuations in the foreign coin market. For example, my last big purchase was a coin with a pop of 2, and none higher, it's 155 years older than that 1920-S, it's gold, and I paid over 1000 dollars less than you did, even after my cost of getting it graded. I realize supply is only half the equation, but I think you're missing the opportunity cost here. Good video, though.
