In this video I will be sharing how I applied powder coating to the Ru-Mer Super fishing reel. I chose powder coating over spray paint because it's a highly effective method of applying a protective and decorative finish to a wide range of materials, primarily metal, but it can also be used on plastics (so I have heard) and some composites. Basically, there are many spray paint options out there, but powder coating is known for its durability. Once cured, it forms a hard finish that is tougher and more resistant to scratches, chipping, fading, and corrosion compared to traditional paints. This makes it ideal for applications exposed to harsh environments or heavy wear and tear.
It is also worth noting that unlike traditional liquid paints, powder coating does not contain harmful solvents and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it more environmentally friendly. Over sprayed powder can be collected and reused, minimizing waste and, compared to paints, it produces fewer hazardous by-products. Although the initial equipment and setup costs for powder coating may be higher compared to traditional painting methods, the long-term cost benefits often outweigh the initial investment. In the past few years many cheaper home options have become available. I purchased mine locally at Harbor Freight, but there are other options out there such as www.eastwood.com and thepowdercoats.... I have also added some Amazon links below. The durability of powder coating means less frequent re-coating or maintenance, reducing overall costs over time.
Another nice thing about powder coating is that it provides a uniform and consistent finish, free from drips, runs, or sags commonly associated with liquid paints. This ensures a high-quality appearance across the entire surface of the coated object. Powder coating offers a wide range of color options and finishes, including gloss, matte, satin, metallic, and textured finishes. This allows for customization to meet specific aesthetic preferences and design requirements. Also, the curing process for powder coating is typically faster than drying times for traditional liquid paints. This helps improve production efficiency and reduces turnaround times.
It is incredibly durable, powder coatings offers excellent resistance to chemicals, including solvents, acids, and detergents, depending on the specific formulation used. This makes them suitable for applications in industries such as automotive, aerospace, appliances, and more. Overall, powder coating is considered a superior finishing method due to its durability, versatility, environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and aesthetic appeal. It has become increasingly popular across various industries for both functional and decorative applications.
Unfortunately, I lost some of the footage of the process, but here's a brief overview of the powder coating steps:
1. Ensure that the surface to be coated is clean and free of any dirt, oil, rust, or old paint. This can be done through methods like sandblasting, chemical cleaning, or mechanical abrasion.
2. The powder coating material is electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the surface using a powder coating gun. The electrostatic charge helps the powder adhere uniformly to the metal surface.
3. After the powder is applied, the coated object is placed in an oven or a curing booth. The heat causes the powder particles to melt and form a smooth, continuous film. The curing temperature and time depend on the type of powder being used, but typically range from 300 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (150 to 230 degrees Celsius) for 10 to 30 minutes.
4. Once the curing process is complete, allow the coated object to cool down to room temperature before handling.
5. Cleanup: Properly clean the powder coating equipment and workspace to ensure that it is ready for future use.
Remember, safety is always important. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and a respirator to protect yourself from inhaling powder particles or harmful fumes. Thanks for watching. Hope this has helped, I will try to give a more concise explanation of the process in another video, but for now be sure to check out the step by step videos I will be adding this week, feel free to ask any questions-wishing you the best! 1💙
