There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

Sorry for being a pedantic nerd for a moment: Conan the Cimmerian comes from Cimmeria, not Hyperborea which does exist as another country in Robert E. Howard's setting he named the Hyborean Age. It's all a bit confusing and really not important at all but I wanted to mention it.

Ok i don't know how you talk about Bulwer-Lytton for *any* length of time without mentioning his single most important literary acheivement: he's the guy who gave us *the* most infamous opening line in English literature: "It was a dark and stormy night..." There's an annual contest in his name where writers compete to produce the "worst possible opening sentences to novels never written".

A few years ago I read this book finding Atlantis about a Scandinavian Renaissance man, olaf rudbeck, who went insane trying to find Atlantis. He theorized it was in Scandinavia and also the Jason and the argonots ended up in Sweden (I think Sweden it's been about 10-15 yrs and I loaned the book to someone who lost it). It's weird that olaf rudbeck is about is responsible for things like scientific experimentation, modern surgery and models of the human body, idea of dating items based on where they are on levels of the crust, air pollution, but SOOOOOO WRONG ABOUT his findings. Like he proved items underneath other object, but because he based the age of the earth from the creation of eden and saying the earth is only 6000 years old, estimated the age of items completely wrong. The book is "Finding atlantis: a true story of genius, madness, and an extraordinary quest for a lost word"

@@marocat4749 I wouldn't say the worst, he did a lot of good and based on when he was in history, he just went a little insane once he started fixating on Atlantis. You do have to remember at this time the mere idea that the earth was billions of years old and not 6000 years old was not just unheard of but unthinkable. And he figured out the model of the human circulatory system and what the purpose of veins and arteries, so there is that. The book is very well written.

I actually might have a family connection to this cook because my great-great-great-grandfather was a fairly prominent Indian theosophist at this time which probably personally knew her. That being said, his legacy is relatively positive because he helped found a school that still exists and is considered elite and a couple of his daughters engaged in inter-faith and interracial marriages in the 30s with his support. Every account I've heard of him and other Indian theosophists paint them as pretty based for the time.

I believe the reason they placed Atlantis up north rather than Africa is not about eclypses, but the Polar Night, when the sun literally disappears for some days during the winter. Of course, this reinforcing what we would recognize as white supremacist ideas to a bunch of white folks did also play a role, though imo at first it was more of a lucky coincidence and then it snowballs.
