This was one of my favorite episodes when it came out on the podcast. I will never forget where exactly I was in Chicago Union Station when I heard the part at the end where Robert described one of Hitler's bunker companions journaling about the sound of the Fuhrer's constipated diarrhea shits as the Soviets closed in on Berlin.

Will Farrell is indeed an incredibly lovely man, my in-laws here in Sweden own a holiday home in the same place he does, so during the summer we get to see him in the tennis tournament. Last summer my brother in-law clocked Will in the family jewels with a tennis serve and despite the obvious pain Will remained polite and civil about the accident.

Honestly, too much of our history excludes the likely presence of drugs. Like, someday people will look back on the past 40+ years of UK politics, and they'll figure out that there's just a huge amount of cocaine involved, or it'll make no sense at all.

I remember listening to that episode about everyday Nazis, and hearing those accounts from them about how basically exhausting and overwhelming it was to live under the Third Reich, did kind of remind me a lot of what I remember about untreated ADHD and unmedicated depression. So it kind of makes a weird amount of sense that the Nazis depended so much on amphetamines.

When Stalin came to power , he started them up again. upd: apparently Tsar forbade drinking alcohol in 1914, learn something new every day

The Russians are medieval people, only normal people back in medieval times didn't have hard liquor and barely had wine. It was beer, mainly. But Russians have not progressed socially or intellectually etc., but they have access to modern distilled spirits (and know how to distill their own) so needless to say, they're a lot of staggering drunks.

wtf are you on about, the Russians are some of the best chest players in the world and put the first man made satellite on orbit. Most university access is free. It was all free during the USSR. They were sending our astronauts in space until recently. They were the first to legalise abortions and gave voting rights to women before western countries. Me, a person with (technically undiagnosed but almost definite) ADHD, who's on methylphenidate,* listening to the description of everyone in the Third Reich as being on amphetamines: "wow, look at all the executive functioning, everyone must have been getting so much stuff done!" *I know methylphenidate is not an amphetamine, although Adderall is (although I'm not on Adderall and haven't tried it or any other form of speed).

Germans didn't invent blitzkrieg. The British were pioneering mechanized warfare decades earlier, they were just slower to adopt it across all branches (cavalry was very bogged down with a stodgy, inbred, traditionalist officer class) and early German victories were more about mistakes made by their opponents than any astonishing revelation in their "brilliant Bavarian tactical genius". Having indomitable meth soldiers is useful for those early pushes but they don't last long and make logistical blunders that will turn the tides from early war to late war. Regarding mechanized warfare, Germany benefitted from a "clean slate" from being demilitarized by the old colonial powers after ww1 in not so different a way that pearl harbor gave the Americans an excuse to update and modernize their whole fleet and war machine. They had a lot of what I'll call "industrial momentum" as a result of having to recover so rapidly and desperately. The nazis stuffy old ww1 generation were just as stupid and silly in how war was supposed to work as the other European powers but they didn't have the victory of the "old ways working" so they were more receptive to committing to mobile warfare.

This is an old comment so I don't recall every bit of context here but I'll answer the question asked. If japan didn't knock out some of our old fleet we weren't likely to have replaced them with newer, better ships that narrowly made the difference in the pacific campaign. If pearl harbor didn't happen then our pacific fleet would have not been as modernized as it was and the pacific theater would have been more of a slog or even lost. Much of what was lost at pearl harbor was eventually recovered, later in the war. What was repaired was also renovated. Do you argue that had those ships not have been incapacitated that the US would have taken the initiative to upgrade them proactively? Prior to Japans attack it wasn't easy to push funding for military modernization.
