There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

Concrete example of the influence of history on cyberpunk you mentioned: a huge influence on AKIRA was the Japanese protests of the 60's you mentioned on another episode.

I thought the same as the guest, as Hardspace: Shipbreaker has some of this too... You're working to pay off astronomical debt while buying all your supplies from the company youxre indebted to. It's also present in Subnautica, as well as Warframe's _Solaris_ town on Venus. Even there, the song Solaris United sings is "We All Lift Together," and the corporate board are literally money-worshipping profits.

The suggestion to make Amazon a public utility was fucking genius. It's terrible that this literal war is not more widely known or understood. We need a blockbuster movie about it. Pedro Pascal should play Governor Haymaker. How appropriate that Solidarity Forever was written about this second Civil War when the tune is based on the Battlehym of the Republic from the first Civil War.

Wait, so they *did* get the 8 hour work week by non-militant striking and not with an armed revolt
@geraintthomas4343
@geraintthomas4343 10 ай бұрын
Striking is by definition militant. The situation of the near armed revolt worried the rest of the ruling clas about the possibility of revolt spreading, hence the senate getting involved.

@@geraintthomas4343 Not the first thing that comes to mind with the term but fair enough. Still puzzled with the conclusion of part two being, "The eight hour work day was entirely gained by polite people with signs protesting that's why that's why we have a weekend not the men who charged machine gun nests and sniped it corporate guards". It comes off as a stretch to arrive at a foregone conclusion

@@thenippleextractor true, terms change, my party was cqlled the militant tendency back in the 70s then had to change name in the late 90s thanks to people thinking we were a militia or something because of the name.

@@thenippleextractor it was told dripping with sarcasm. If you look into labor history you realize all the benefits we have been earned in blood. He has covered plenty of examples of corporations straight up killing people to save money. Edit: I wrote this comment when they got to the line. Robert explicitly calls out the white washing of labor history. We will show the strikes, but we aren't going to talk about when a corporation had help from the state to engage in a military operation against American workers.
@BlindErephon
@BlindErephon 8 күн бұрын
@@thenippleextractor The reason part two ends like that is because people tend to forget or overlook the fact that both violent and non violent militancy is necessary to achieve anything. Eight hour work days wouldn't have happened if people hadn't been willing to literally fight about it. The mine bosses were perfectly willing to simply massacre their workforce and bring in a new one. Non violent action is great and if the subject is reasonable or you have public opinion on your side, all you need. But when they hire a legion of thugs, set up barbed wire and machine guns, or DRIVE AN ARMORED TRAIN THRU YOUR TOWN, you cant just go "Welp. Non violence, guess I cant do anything.", because that makes you weak and easy to ignore and be spun. Its not new, just take any modern protest movement as an example. People get shot, beaten, gassed, and then people who weren't there but would love to not think about it or change anything say "Well they had it coming."
