There is more to this 1. What if you don’t sell all the parts of a set that you have parted out? 2. You need drawers, shelves or bags if you part out. 3. Time spend parting out and selling individual parts takes more time than selling sets. Time that if you send that at a job is income lost. 4. LEGO might release new versions of a set (Y-Wing) and so previous versions might not increase much or even drop in price on a now release.

Might do a follow up as these are valid points 1) that's why you should price accordingly. I had sealed sets that set on shelves forever. Get more regular sales with parts vs sealed sets 2) yes you do - it's an upfront cost. Infrastructure. It's not a reoccurring cost 3) time saved picking orders. Only takes minutes to pick and pack and ship most orders. My wife can do it or anyone else can be trained. Don't have to worry about having boxes, peanuts, or tons of bubble wrap stored to ship the sealed sets. 4) I've never understood that argument. Not sure what how a new release can affect the value of a discontinued set other than if actual rare parts were reprinted.

The issue with parting them out, is you have to sell every part to get the most. You sell the set and one shot you are done. I think I would part everything out unless I found sets that were all ready retired and good sets.
@oh-totoro
@oh-totoro 6 жыл бұрын
And you don't even have to keep a sealed set for that long. These days it's easy to ascertain when a current LEGO set is going to be discontinued, so you can pick them up during the clearance sales and then just wait as little as a year and sell them off at a profit. There's always sets just about to be discontinued.

GREAT VIDEO - so informative! Thank you so much. I don't sell now but may when I retire in a few years. #BAT has anything changed over the last few years, or do the lessons in this video still hold true? Has any set really surprised you since this video was filmed?

the 1st proper polybag with complete is on from happy meal from mcdonalds it was in 1983. The previous polybags is hard to name polybags as of 2015 year. like a toy. In 1977 it was only spare parts.

Yes in the long run you will get more money. But it is 1. Much harder to sell thousands of pieces like that. 2. It will take years to sell that many pieces unlike selling sealed sets where you leave it on bricklink for a month and then its sold.

With the rising popularity of bricklink over the last decade it’s way better to part out sets rather than holding onto dead stock for 5+ years. The joker bumper car from 2015 was the first polybag. *its the same*. I go into a department store looking for LEGO and I’m thinking oo I could sell that

In 1983 4 Polybags came out as McDonald / Lego promotional pieces. 1919-1 , 1918-1 , 1917-2 and 1916-2. these are what I could find at least.

Hey Brick Tsar, how/where are you finding those part out values from? Thanks!
@TheKiltyONeal
@TheKiltyONeal 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for putting this video together. A couple of observations ... 1) When you list the part out value, aren't you assuming that all the pieces will sell? I've seen large Bricklink stores claim that half their inventory is effectively dead inventory that won't sell unless discounted. How are you guaranteed that 100% of the parts will sell? 2) Parting out sets and filling orders is a very labor intensive process. Shouldn't you consider this when doing the comparison?
@BrickTsar
@BrickTsar 9 жыл бұрын
+Kilty O'Neal All good points. Good for an update. Sometimes parts do sit a while. I was actually surprised to see that most of the higher value parts from the set we parted out on video last week have already sold. If the price is right the higher value items could sell very quickly. But yes you can have slow selling or dead stock. Who buys friction pins? Planet spheres? Often those are penny items though. So I agree some additional clarification is needed. But I will say that I have more sales now with parts than I ever did with sealed sets, and I sold some classics over the last 15 years.

What do you use as a Part Out value? I can only get this price on BrickLink by creating a wanted list with the parts from the set and then Buy All, but that only gives me the current part out price, not the average from 6 months you seem to be using. Thanks for putting out all those videos with so much helpful information.
@BrickTsar
@BrickTsar 5 жыл бұрын
The price guide has the current average price and last 6 month average for all parts and pieces that are in the inventory. You don’t have to put it in a wanted list to see it. Just look up your part or set. Bookmark the link www.bricklink.com/catalogPG.asp

i have no clue what the 1st PolyBag was, but i'd assume it was probably some type of little seasonal set that they either sold around Christmas time 1 year or a promotional item they gave away if you spent a certain amount of money on other LEGO items.

I would say #1121 was the first lego in a bag set back in 77, it was a service pack. The purpose of polybags are for promotion so I think the service packs do not qualify as I personally do not think that was their purpose. I would actually say the first promotional polybag is actually the one you showed #1912 from the year I was born :-D I have been back into Lego for a year so I have no idea if I am even close to the right answer but that is my thoughts. Thanks for this video, really helps!

+BrickTsar LEGO® Collector do you sometimes buy the friends sets and part out for the death star and the star destroyer , to see how, in 10 years time when you part it out for that, 30 year anniversary of lego star wars , and everyone is asking , oh, brickstar has 30 death star sets all made out of friends lego hauls lol, but, people won't want the minfigures because they can buy them from others to build a super dooper 30 death star, sort, ( 4x2 and 2x3, and 2x1 and inverted slopes and roof tiles, - wen I think about the deathstar and the idea people build it for the prizoner cells and the space part and the throne room, and the galactic meeting, town hall meeting debates. . for a proper death star it is like building a large city. it has assembly areas, and a person building 3 death stars in 2019, will want to be able to do 3 at least. from just friends lego . or. the proper death star.. 100 stories tall with enough room to land the mellenuim falcon, proper dimentions would be 10 feet by 10 feet in a garage shed build www.hexapolis.com/2015/02/16/gargantuan-13-ft-high-lego-death-star-set-unveiled-legoland/ , actually, the first lego polybag would be the Japanese ones that you did . because in 1970, macdonalds did them, the 2 piece plane, the 3 piece boat, the 10 piece car

@BrickTsar

What people list stuff for sale and what it actually sells for are two distinct things. The people on Amazon, eBay, and even Bricklink often test the waters to see if people will bite on a high price. That's why you need to look at last 6 months sales average. Of course with a limited supply the price will go up. I once did a video of a vintage model maker set and so many people liked the car that they went to eBay and Bricklink and started buying them. This raised the price of the set. This is why I use watch lists. I had been trying to get Bau Mit for years - finally somebody listed it at a reasonable price. Same with many items. But it may indeed be hard to find it for the $215 now. Even the individual parts may be hard to find too though

the pet shop modular is still being sold at approx $150 on the Lego store as of 10/31/2015. it had a few shortages from Lego this year along with the Palace Cinema that could have caused the rise in the eBay price or sellers that think the set is out of production when it is still in production I've seen this with a few sealed Lego train sets along with a few other sets while they are still in production and in stock. shop.lego.com/en-US/Pet-Shop-10218

Have you made any videos on minifigure prices? The value inside a sealed set vs loose figures? On eBay, Clone Trooper minifigures are always a hot commodity! An example would be the 501st Clone Trooper set 75280. I was going to buy that set for $30 and then I decided to go to eBay and buy a box of used Lego for $30. Inside that box of used Lego on eBay for $30 turn out to be the AT-AT 4483(no minifigures). I'm glad I didn't give in to my lust for those Clone Troopers at the Meijer store!

Well, if you know one that is older, than you know the oldest. That's a trick, isn't it? Thanks to you, I know of service packs but I have no idea how old they are, and I don't think I would consider them a poly bag, because they were not sets. So I am going with that McDonalds bag you had because I remember getting that from McDonalds back in the good ole days.
