I love this idea. My question is did you try to fluff the washed milkweed tester square in the dryer before you opened it up? Maybe it would fluff back up if you dried it fully in the dryer? Also if you use wool on the outside of the bag it could potentially become more non flammable. You could even make a woolen “over bag that could be laundered separately based on wool’s specific washing instructions and that would protect the inner bag from burning. This could also double the insulative powers of the original bag in really cold weather.
@TrekSquad7 күн бұрын
I just air dried it. It’s possible that it would fluff back up in the dryer I need to experiment with it some more. More and thicker fabric would definitely help make it more fiber proof.

I am curious, if it would be risk of decaying like mold or mildew if it gotten wet. It seems like it retains the moisture by how much it bunched to the corner. It would be nearly impossible to get it completely dry in a bag if it was rained on or if it had snow that melted and got in the fabric.
@boxypunkchick33579 күн бұрын
Maybe try using a hydrophobic spray for fabrics on the cloth that holds the milkweed?
@TrekSquad8 күн бұрын
Great question. It would be hard to get fully dry if it got wet. I’ve considered scotch guard spray to protect it.

@@TrekSquadWith other sorts of fiber fluff, you put it in the clothes dryer and also put in a tennis shoe or those dryer balls to keep massaging it as it dries. Then it doesn't clump so much.

@@shethra77 most people don't have dryers when camping. Some people like myself camp for a weekend to a week.

@@boxypunkchick3357 True, yeah. I don't know what to do if you wash it or dry it outside.

@TaraBaby26c4u27 күн бұрын
Maybe you could make little pouches and use it as fire starters
@TrekSquad7 күн бұрын
I actually already do that. You just use the little boats that the milk weed floss grows in and add some wax. It’s a great fire starter!

Honestly, I think you’d be find to run it through the wash if you quilted the fabric a bit more with a few more passes of the sewing machine. Completely understandable that that would be more than a bit labor intensive tho.
@TrekSquad2 күн бұрын
I agree, a few more passes would definitely help with the stability.

there are different kinds of milkweed, which one did you find and use ?
@shethra778 күн бұрын
Looked like he used Asclepius syriaca, common milkweed. It grows very happily here in Pennsylvania, and clearly grows happily where he is as well.
