That's so true. One of my favorite characters in fiction is Dalinar from The Stormlight Archive. He's a middle-aged man who's infamous for being a brutal & fearsome warrior. He struggles with being a good leader while also not neglecting his responsibilities as a father and husband, protecting his people, maneuvering political alliances, & leaving his dark past behind. I'm a 20 y/o female uni student who'd describe herself as rather pacifistic & the only thing I'm currently struggling with is trying not to have a mental breakdown whenever I step into an exam room.

That’s very true. I think people may be confusing relating to a character with caring. I usually can’t get into a book if I do not care for a character. Plots don’t even need to be there for me but characters have to be solid. So if I don’t care about the characters it’s a no go. But totally agree you do not need to relate. That’s the beauty of reading, reading different experiences and perspectives from our own

About the youtubers who dont read diversely, ive noticed that i have started to pull away from those content creators once diversifying my reading became more important to me. There is a specific youtuber who i love but noticed that every time they read a diverse book there where all these issues that were normally not mentioned in reviews of books where the author was white. I found myself making excuses in my head for them like well maybe that book really does have those issues but when i started reading more and noticed that they didnt mention the same issues for the white books and it rubbed me the wrong way. Like i get not mentioning every lil pet peeve but if you had your grown up pants to critique it on a book that is written by a bipoc author than i wanna see the same energy for the white counterparts. Im just sooo tired of people saying well ive read that before or it seems a bit tired but then turn around and read another book with the same old tropes and not a peep of the creator once the author is white. Like i get it same old same old but then why point it out at all if the author/book is diverse 🙄

In terms of a stack of books with spines hidden - I get why it's done, but I find it makes it much harder to find people with similar taste to you! It'd be a lot easier to see if we have similar reading tastes and thus how well I'd vibe with someone's content. Also - makes it much harder to find opinions about a specific book if I've just read it and want to hear other's opinions!

I prefer to see the book titles in the thumbnail. A lot of the booktubers I follow I will watch all their content regardless whether I'm interested in the books or not. I often end up interested in books that I previously hadn't thought much about. Another reason I prefer the book shown in thumbnails is if I want to go back and hear their thoughts on a particular book and it takes forever to figure out which wrap up it's in, especially a book they might have read years ago. Thumbnails make it easier to go back and find specific books.

resellers in general are an issue in most collector communities. I also collect records and bots/scalpers are a huge problem there as well. There's an event every year called Record Store Day where they release a lot of special/limited edition vinyl and people will try to get there super early to buy all the good stuff up and resell it for like 5x the price. It's frustrating to wait in line for over an hour and then the one thing you want is long gone due to resellers.

The big problem with problematic authors is not everyone hears about what they did at the same time. I've seen booktubers mentioning they're no longer reading an author and that's the first time I've heard anything about them doing something. (And they don't always say what, which can make finding out what it was hit or miss.)

I don't have facebook, I'm not very active on Twitter and I don't see many people who I follow on Instagram talking about author/ booktube drama. I can't even count how many times I saw a booktuber unhauling books by a certain author, saying, "Well, I don't want to show my support of this author anymore after what they've done" or showing a book in a haul, saying, "I bought this book before the things this author did came out. I wouldn't have bought it if I had known earlier what they did." or something similar to that. Every time. And I mean EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I'm so confused, thinking, "Wait what??! What happened? What did they do?". The booktubers usually never mention it in their videos, so I have to search through the darkest depths of the internet find out about it. I've almost never noticed author/ booktube drama while it was at its height of activity on social media. The only time I noticed drama while it was still unfolding was the whole JKR drama. Even that, though, I only really noticed after it has already been a hot topic of discussion for a while.

In regards to the authors not owing people books, it was actually a big thing a while back in the JLA group. There was some people saying she should finish writing/ release the final book in the Origin series, and stop getting "distracted" and "sidetracked" with the FBAA world. They were saying that in a group in which JLA was a part of, and she read that and responded that she hasn't been able to finish the final Origin book because there's a pandemic aspect (the series was before COVID), and writing in it now puts her in a bad headspace since we're currently in a pandemic IRL. The audacity of people who demand and try to tell authors what to write, basically to their faces, is unimaginable to me. It's one thing to be like "I can't wait, I'm so excited" or "please continue the series, I love it and need to know what's going to happen" but some people take it way too far.

Obviously there are a few with mainstream fame (or infamy) like JK Rowling that I know about, but most authors I don't know a single thing about who they are. I pick up books that sound interesting to me without knowing anything about who wrote it and after finding/purchasing a book, I often couldn't even tell you the author's name. If I LOVED a book and it's my new favorite thing, I'll recall the name probably, but I still don't go look into who the author is outside of seeing what else they've written. This probably doesn't lead to the most diverse reading because I'm not intentionally seeking anyone or anything out, but it is peaceful.

Those stepbacks on paperbacks drive me crazy, I try to avoid those at all cost, but sometimes I can't. The last one is annoying and it's not only books, but sometimes it's clothing or Funko Pops or random stuff from my childhood like a She-Ra castle that my mom threw out behind my back which really pissed me off because that was my childhood idol...lol. I am on Pangobooks where I like to buy and sell books. I don't like to price gouge because if I am selling these books it's because I no longer have an interest in that book, I DNFed it, I was on the fence about the book and then saw reviews that changed my mind, or in the one case I got a deluxe version and didn't need the one volume anymore. I think the highest I sold anything I priced at $10 because it was like new and it was a chunker of a book. I usually price things between $1-$6 because I want people to buy and afford these books, wish I could help on the shipping cost, but that's up to the app I suppose. I have seen on Pangobooks a few people price gouging books that aren't that hard to find for more that they paid for and some aren't even new books. It's disgusting and I don't like swindling my fellow book dragons out of their hard earned coin. I just want these books out of here to make more room for my new books that come in.

For the one about letting other people choose to read (or not read) certain authors, and letting others make their own decisions... Like, yes, but if you do choose to share "problematic" content, you have to be ok with people calling that author out in your comments. For example: The House on the Cerulean Sea. I personally loved that book, but am completely aware of the reasons people choose not to read it. If you mention that book, people WILL talk about the link to residential schools; even if just to make sure everyone is aware of the link and can make an informed decision, which I think is good. Listen to Indigenous people when they say something is unacceptable! If you don't want to have a discussion about residential schools in your comments, then don't talk about that book, you know? You can't have your cake and eat it too, aka read "problematic" authors and not talk about their "problematic" behaviors. Same thing for JKR; you can't heap praise on the HP franchise and then get upset when trans people and trans allies talk about JKR's transphobia in your comments. You have the freedom to make your own choices about the books you read, but people also have the freedom to comment their opinions of those books (respectfully). ("Problematic" in quotes throughout because I'm not sure it's the right word to use in this context, but couldn't think of a better one.)

i definitely agree. people will pile praise onto books with problematic content and/or authors and get annoyed with comments discussing the problematic elements. even if you like a book you can acknowledge its faults! personally i was obsessed with harry potter as a kid and still enjoy content from it occasionally BUT i can acknowledge that looking at the series now its filled w/ JKR’s views and prejudices. a lot of ppl don’t know how to do that and choose to be blind to any problems to maintain their image of their favorite book/series.

What I find annoying about the whole "you have to be diverse in your reading" is that there are specific diverse groups that you SHOULD read and if you don't you're not diverse enough. I've seen many booktubers gushing over LGBTQ+ books, regardless if they're meh or 5 stars for them. And be like "ew this books is too straight for me" for heterosexual books. Or "this is too white". A good book is a good book regardless of race and sexuality. Of course having diverse characters is a good thing, given they're not just stereotypes or a check list to fulfill. But what I find annoying is putting down other groups to uplift others. It's a cycle I see everywhere with the media. I'm Latina btw and straight, I'm not gonna read books only about Latin American stories, I'll read whatever I find interesting

It hurts me to dislike a book when it’s an own voices book. I just can’t say I loved it just because of the diversity though, it’s not a “good” book by default just because it’s own voices. 🤷🏼♀️
@sabrina.lnd952 жыл бұрын
I feel like as long as the problem doesn't lie with the "own voices" part then I think it's fair game. Just because it's from a non-white, non-straight etc. author doesn't automatically mean it's a good book. There was a discussion about this on *I think* Heather's channel where they said "bipoc authors are allowed to be mediocre" (not a direct quote) so I feel we should definitely review them as we would books from white people and not walk on eggshells while talking about issues you had with the book.

about the very first one: excuse me everyone complaining about it but it just makes more sense to order the books in the "wrong" way, there's a beauty to the particular flow of the overall sequence of the text itself while it sits on the shelf why should the beginning of the first book on a series sit so close to the end of the of the second part when you can have the end of the first book sit right next to the beginning of the second? would you also stack a series with the first book at the bottom? obviously this only applies to traditional western books with the spine on the left side of the front cover, manga you would order as 1-2-3 since the spine is on the left (unless is one of those ancient editions where they mirrored the whole thing because marketing) so Jess, you are right and i do exactly the same!

As far as spines in thumbnails I usually don’t care for the people I already follow but it is kind of annoying when going through the backlist videos of a new to me channel bc I sometimes want to find specific thoughts on a book rather than just listening to all the books they’ve read over the years!

I don't like how people are selling TOG and ACOTAR dust jackets for freaking $500 and over... right now Nerdy Ink has both of them for sale for $40!!!!!!!!! it's sad... omg I agree with this about book re-sellers selling limited edition things!!! or when people only have book box subscriptions to sell them!!! I am still on a damn waiting list (2 years) it's freaking dumb!!! ***$40 for each book series!!!***

There are a couple of content creators that give spoilers even when they specifically say they're doing spoiler free reviews. Then, they proceed to tell the entire story from beginning to end. Because I like the creator, I usually watch their videos if I know I have no intention of reading the books they're talking about. I end up giggling all the way through, but I feel sorry for those who watched not knowing they'd be getting spoilers the entire way through the video.

There's a creator who'll be like "I try not to give away too much about a book but if you don't know what this book is about it's a Tangled retelling about this princess who is locked in a tower by her family because she's ugly as hell and they're trying to con a prince to marry her without seeing her so they can secure the dowry before he reacts. But then a blind thief breaks into the tower and she tries to hide from him at first and he tells her he would rather face the people he is robbing. He overhears the family's plan and decides to con her into leaving the tower and they fall in love on their adventures."

I’ve seen that too. I came across one channel who thought “spoiler free” meant “I won’t tell you the ending, but I’ll tell you everything else that happened until the last 50 pages” like why? Why would anyone want that?

The trouble I run into with diverse reading is that I only like a very specific subgenre of political and heist fantasies so it’s hard to find some them in general and very few of the ones I’ve found that interest me are diverse and that sucks.
@Pharm2be2 жыл бұрын
Also! On book resellers. Like maybe you got a box and you didn’t like what was in it and now you’re out $80. I understand trying to get that money back but I literally don’t understand asking for maybe 20-50 more than what you paid originally. Literally everything else depreciates when it’s been bought. You expect 5x the original price for a used book? Crazy. Also it’s definitely a temporary market. In 5-10 years when the novelty is gone and people decide that having a book they don’t like isn’t worth keeping for the pretty covered these books are going to flood the market.

If a booktuber doesn't show the cover of the book in their book vlogs, I will not click on it. If your vlogs are not amusing on their own and you need my curiosity about the book to click on your video, you don't deserve my time anyway ;)

I had no idea it was called a stepback but I hate those. Agreed 100% with you! I agree, it is weird when people rate a book before they've read it. I want the last 2 books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series too! Oh yeah the character let out a breath they didn't know they were holding.. ugh. Ugh for dude bros fantasy saying a femme didn't understand a book when they didn't like it. True yeah people have to decide for themselves. People pronounced my name so often when I was a kid and teenager, ugh. I watch some TBR games too! I couldn't do it myself as I'm a huge mood reader (like you too), but I enjoy watching other people's videos of TBR games. Yeah I don't understand it either when people lower the rating of a book because they didn't relate to certain culture aspects. Oh ugh yeah for journalist reviewer being confused reading book 2 in a fantasy series, when she should have just read book one first. I try to start at the beginning too! Yeah lol don't start with Oathbringer what. Why do people sell their box that just arrived at $650, wth, I hate that too. Yeah that is frustrating and annoying. Great video!
@cynthialovesbooks2 жыл бұрын
I love your energy and humor! You need your own show. So, I am not stingy with my 5-star ratings, only because ratings are personal and kind of arbitrary (as in they are not standardized) and they are really important to indie authors (who are the ones I mostly read). For me, 5-star ratings are all about the experience. As to authors owing readers, this is a big issue in the indie romance community because a lot of indie romance authors tend to publish multiple books in one year and indie romance readers will read a lot of books. But I don't think authors owe readers anything. For George R. R. Martin, I do hope he finishes the series and fixes what HBO broke. He still has a chance to save that series and I am holding out hope. So as to your question about the blurred out thumbnail, I will click on any video from my favorite creators. If it's someone unknown to me, I may or may not and it will just depend on my mood that day. Have a great time in Norway!

THANK YOU- I think so too (that I deserve my own show 😆😆😆) but yes I really need George to give us a better ending 😫😫
