The Partially Examined Life

Күн бұрын

This is an excerpt from a prior episode of The Partially Examined Life podcast, discussing Maurice Merleau-Ponty's The World of Perception and The Primacy of Perception. You can find the entire unabridged Merleau-Ponty podcast, along with dozens of others discussing philosophers from Aristotle to Wittgenstein, at the Partially Examined Life website: www.partiallyex...
About PEL: The podcasters were all graduate students in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin back in the Clinton years. They all left the program at some point before getting their doctorates and have consequently since had time to get outside that whole weird world of academia and reflect on it and the various philosophical topics with a different, and probably much more lazy, perspective.

Thanks for this stimulating discussion! A riff on the argument about hypothesizing a theoretical entity that we cannot (yet) perceive to explain the perceptible: Semmelweis hypothesized that “death particles” explain why people died under the hands of physicians that did not disinfect in-between patients. He was onto something, but it was a conjecture foreign to his contemporaries, who rejected it until others later provided the modern germ theory of disease. As scholars like Wootton, in “bad medicine”, write about.

Almost but not quite-- this episode shows analytic philosophers trying to understand continental philosophy, and getting it wrong -- nevertheless its a really fascinating conversation among very smart people. :D

This comment reminds me of Searle accusing Derrida for this strategy called terrorism of obscurantism : ”you can hardly misread him, because he so so obscure”… ;D

No No No and No he's says that matter has form, has body and thus is determined by it. so to discuss body/ form is better rather than the thing

it's fine to pronounce it like that, we don't need to say everything with it's original inflection.
