Ah, OK! I get sin⁻¹(4/5) for that first part using the equation derived in the video. From there on you can resolve the velocity into components and treat it as a projectile. Next video is already recorded and should be posted tomorrow.

Could have went straight to the condition of 0 contact force at the top of the loop (when theta = 0).

Indeed, I've taken that shortcut in the follow-up video I mentioned, but wanted to justify mathematically why that works at least once!

I don't see how there is a normal reaction when there is no force acting against the surface

There is a force acting on the surface, equal and opposite to N by Newton's third law! We don't usually bother to draw this on the diagram as we only care about the forces on the particle.
