Worked solution for Question 1, Chapter 5 (available as free download at www.particles....) in Fundamentals of Particle Technology. This covers what is called Free Settling, and the Terminal Settling Velocity of a particle within a fluid (liquid or gas). The Stokes settling equation can be used under conditions of minimal degree of turbulence in the fluid, but at higher turbulence (Particle Reynolds Number) the alternative approach due to Heywood is illustrated. This approach is valid for all Reynolds Numbers and uses the Heywood Tables, which are freely available from the particles.org.uk web site.
