I worked at a truck shop years ago and we rebuilt starters and alternators in-house. Each unit was run-in on a test bench prior to installation and we were able to mitigate any component failures. Starters were tested for locked and running current draw and alternators were tested for full output, ripple and regulated voltage if applicable.

Did you do any tests at that shop to show if all the bushings were installed? As a meer teen I worked on my uncles Chevy and upon opening the starter that barely worked I discovered the remanufacturing shop did not put any bushing in one end. Oops Armature was dragging all over

Some auto parts chain stores have a quality control and passed inspection tag on the part but your experience calls that into question. You have a lot of patience for a situation like that. I check standing voltage on a battery before buying one and the.newest one on the rack. Always great videos!!

Rebuilt means they replaced the broken part and nothing more. Remanufactured means they go through the entire starter or alternator replacing all wear parts like brushes, bendix drives and internal regulators. Thats why you have 1yr, 2yr and 5 yr warranties. Often a Remanufactured dealer part is your best bet. 40 years ago I sold auto parts and the failure rate was 4 bad out of 5 units on the shelf. Crazy then crazy now.

Fix your old jack. I had the 3 ton version of your jack and got it about the same time you got yours (as a Christmas gift from dad I think). It stopped working like you describe yours as doing about 5 years ago. I love that jack so I kept it, thinking I would have it repaired. I finally got around to googling for repair parts and found them. I think the seal kit was about $30. It was super easy to install the seals and now It works like new again.

Pine Hollow Diagnostics had a Hyundai vehicle that had repeated failures of alternators and it turned out to be high resistance in the negative cable where it meets the frame. He cleaned up all connections of the negative cable and it corrected the problem. Keep this in mind if you have repeated failures of the Alternator.

Way back in the last century (70's) I bought a rebuilt alternator from Checker Auto (don't think they exist any more). I was young and didn't have much money, so the rebuilt alternators fit my budget. Then took a long trip from Missouri to Arizona. On that trip I had to change that alternator 3 times before I got one that would last. It was a real 'pita'. I got where I could change that alternator in about 10 minutes, even in the dark sometimes. Lesson learned, I now tend to shy away from "rebuilt" auto parts. The extra $$ are well worth the time and aggravation from dealing with low cost replacement parts.

Don't forget Agnostic Front, Fear, and Dead Kennedy's on the punk side and Iron Maiden, Dio, Motorhead (RIP Lemmy), and Megadeth in the Metal lane.. Also love: The Cult, Killing Joke, Bad Brains, Love & Rockets, New Order, Front 242 in the Alternative genre. Intellifix tends to have better information on specific repairs than Alldata in my experience. Alternators are notorious for DOA and I always have them test the 'new' alt in the store if I'm not having it delivered.. It's actually amazing how high the failure rate is of parts from any of these parts chains. I'd say in the 30-40% range. South Main Auto? Eric O. is no they unless you are including Mrs. O - Vanessa - Queen of the front of the house! Eric O. is the reigning King of KZbin mechanical channels. Many have come and gone and some newer channels (Rainman Ray) are hitting it out of the park. But nobody can touch SMA for quality, quantity , and entertainment value. Although Kenny, you will be there with them (in numbers) very soon I believe! Keep on wrenching!

A couple years ago my daughter had a KIA RIO, the alternator went out. I started trying to remove it from the top, ended up removing from the bottom. I got it out the bottom after removing a few things and loosening and moving the Rack and pinion steering. When I got it out and the Autoparts store said it was a good alternator, I told my daughter if she doesn't want to get a new one she will have to take it to a shop. What testing I did told me it was bad. I put the new alternator in, she didn't have any more problems with it. I did the work on a hot day, on the ground in my front yard and it took about 3 hours to get it out and 45 minutes to put it in. She got another car about 2 years later and sold the RIO, I was kind of happy about that, I worked on the RIO several times. It ran well but seemed to keep having problems.

From Leo: Something has changed, we never had troubles like this in the past. It used to be a straight forward job. I never buy the cheap rebuilds, I get the best they have. Even spending a ton of extra money, I have been burned by alternators more and more. Now they are a 50/50 chance that you will lose money when you do it the 2nd time for free. Of course most customers think it is the mechanics fault, especially if they pay a tow charge.

My one battery charger was made by GE around 1950, but still is working, after a few repairs and updates to put charge control in it, to not cook batteries. 3A average charge current. Also go another smaller GE with 1A charge rate, that is fine to keep a battery charged all the time. Modified a welder to make a DC fast charge, up to 50A for 30s, which is enough to bring a battery up to something useful. Issue with the alternator is that the regulator is the wrong type, you have a few different ones that are used, from a plain dumb one that simply acts like an old 1980's alternator, to the more modern ones where the ECU is the thing that provides charge regulation, and varies a PWM signal to control voltage from the alternator, and battery charge. Yes been bitten by this as well, solution was to go to the dealership, and order the exactly right alternator, based on VIN of the vehicle, direct from Korea via the agents. They will give the right part, and i would say your daughter has a failed brush pack on the alternator, worn away. New brushes $1 by me, though for the one I needed a different brush, so bought the cheapest VAG clone, and ripped the brushes out of that.

Big fan of your channel and longtime subscribers to SMA! Just this past weekend my wife’s 2014 Acura RDX had same failures? Found the Acura shop manual says same thing just remove generator and replace? But it takes removal of motor mount to pull alternator from top? Make sure to check and clean any ground you can touch? Found two with Green and crusty connections! And the one thing I was amazed to find is that these recent Alternator/Generator, can only be tested in the vehicle? Even when rebuilt on a bench the CanBus system controls the charging system. And for the system to check itself it has to be under load at high idle and headlights and AC on to see system charge! I kept thinking the new alternator was bad? But when under load and lights on system charged normally?

A big part of he problem is that a large percentage of customers (including some shops) search around for the cheapest parts they can find. To be competitive the marked has responded with a lot of cheap low quality parts. I worked in the auto parts business for many years and I can tell you that it's gotten a lot worse over the last twenty years or so. It's stuff like this that doesn't make me miss the car business at all. If you are flat rate, it would drive you crazy because you only get paid to do the job once and you have to do it multiple times before being done with it. Parts quality should not be this bad, but as long as we keep Mexico and China happy, all is good right?

I had three bad ones in one day for my Acura. Fortunately all I had to do each time was pull the wheel, pop the ball joint, jack the engine, remove the axle, remove the alt and remove the bracket just to get the alt out of its hole and reverse procedure. Each time. As for your music LMAO, I get you. If I'm in the mood for some gospel, the group Lamb of God gets it done.🤣If you know you know. Like you, country is my only hell not unless it's the highly offensive Try That In A Small Town by Jason Aldean. Then we're good to go. Best to you.

When you took the Duralast alternator back to Autozone, did they test the new Alternator and did it for sure test bad? If so, did you just exchange the Alternator for another Duralast or get a refund and go somewhere else to get another new Alternator?

And another reason I hate front wheel drive vehicles. Everything is all crammed in there with no realistic method to service. Next the service manual will tell you to place vehicle in service mode before starting. Which will include removing fenders, grill, struts, wheel, drive axle, upper and lower control arms, and finally removing the wheel well with a death wheel on an angle grinder.

Today's country music isn't country music, and rap isn't any kind of music. I've "fixed" more than a few alternators by installing new brushes or brush holder assembles. A handy thing to have is a one of the plug into the cigarette lighter oh yeah "Power port" volt meters, you can tell a lot by watching the voltage on one of those.
