pfSense makes the most sense. I wonder which OS you decided.

Well, I moved to pfSense on my router boxes 5+ years ago. Twin cheap SSDs in a ZFS mirror for redundancy, and never looked back. My main concern has always been to avoid the massive headache of having my main router fail. Not a box I'd use for experiments basically.

I think using something like OmniOS as host and router (or Tribblix) would be interesting, there are not many pages or videos describing how to set that up as a straightforward home router.

NetBSD with NPF and Unbound DNS. IPfire is another option. Hope you do a video about your adventure

I have exact same HW. If 2 nics on card + the network port on motherboard is enough for your needs then its a fine firewall. I needed 4+ Nic ports so had to move to other HW for my pfsense home firewall. Usb2Rj45 adapters to expand the Nic ports is non viable as they top up at slow 45Mb/s for network traffic... Happened to me .. hence I repurposed mine as a Proxmox Virtualization host for 2-3 VMs. Works fine with Proxmox for me.

OpnSense? :)

OPNSense...the better pfSense ;)

I have no experience using any of those choices for the purpose of a router, but I would like to do the same eventually (consumer-grade networking equipment is always garbage in my experience). Due to my personal interest in it I think I would opt for illumos, assuming I didn't' run into any massive caveats.

If it is not critical, I would vote for the more interesting way of virtualization!

I’m pfSense on proxmox vm and running tplink Omada in a second vm to manage the Wi-Fi. Massive overkill for one house but it was interesting 😂

I'd put Linux or FreeBSD on it, those are more performant and energy efficient but that's just me. You said you don't care about performance so there are no wrong choices here.

In your shoes, I'd probably just put OpenBSD on it, copy my pf.conf across and call it - "do one thing and do it well", as the saying goes. But as a viewer of your channel, I confess I'd be more interested to watch you replicate the functionality in any of the "exotic" (in comparison) configs you described.

Servers get the best SSDs. Kingston is all right, but they do fail.

i'd just put linux on it, probably FreeBSD or OpenBSD
