▶ In this video, I explore the concept of territories that could potentially join neighboring countries due to cultural, historical, or geopolitical reasons. Starting with Galicia in Spain, noting its cultural connections to Portugal, particularly in language and historical ties. Moving on to the Orkney Islands in the United Kingdom, which once belonged to Norway and where there is a historical backdrop and local wish that could lead to potential reunification. Northern Ireland is then discussed, with the increasing likelihood of reunification with Ireland, considering the changing demographics and sentiments. Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) in Azerbaijan is a complex situation, being internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but having a predominantly Armenian population, leading to ongoing conflicts. Transylvania in Romania, originally part of Hungary, still hosts a Hungarian minority, prompting occasional calls for reunification. Istria in Croatia, once under Italian rule, has a small Italian-speaking community. Corsica, although part of France, has historical ties to Italy, and some Corsicans express desires for independence or autonomy.

@@manotenkerian Because Zionists are prejudice to Armenians, especially the Armenian Christian who are native to the Levant and reside in Jerusalem and Lebanon. The hatred is so solid that Israel sends weapons to Azerbaijan so that they can more easily build up a military presence on the Armenian border. This is in order to eventually annex the south of Armenia all the way up to just North of Yerevan as many Azerbaijani claim this area as theirs.

Artsakh doesn't exist anymore as of the time this vid is published. 80% of the population fled to Armenia since the start of the current conflict and I guess it will officially be a part of Azerbajan soon. Also to be fair Istria was under Venetian rule for several centuries so Italian influence goes back a lot longer too.

Galicia and Portugal were the same nation once. The house of Burgundy wasn't the first to rule Portugal, they were simply the first to obtain the rank of kings. The first ruler of Portugal was... Vímara Peres, and his descendants. One of them was defeated, which left the door open for the Galician monarch to declare himself king of Galicia AND Portugal.

As an Italian, I think I can give some more info that you left out about Istria, Corsica and South Tyrol (not mentioned in the video): Istria was Latin for most of its history, first with the Romans, then with Venice, but for for various reasons it has been slavicized several times. At least today Italian is still recognized as a language in both Slovenia and Croatia and it seems fair enough to me. Corsica has always been linked to the rest of Italy by language, culture and traditions and their father of fatherland Pasquale Paoli has always supported the idea of being recognized as Italians with equal rights as others. Unfortunately, this awareness has only remained with some older corsican, because by now the majority no longer feel this brotherhood. What in my opinion they don't realize is that with Italy they could make their identity even stronger (obtaining the status of Autonomous Region, with the recognition and protection of Language and Culture, and if necessary, having as official language both French than Italian, as already happens in Valle d'Aosta). Many Italians identify themselves in their Region and by doing so they are emphasizing the fact of being even more Italian (obviously if it is done in a peaceful way, and not ignorantly and aggressively)... and for Corsica it would be the same: consciously identifying themselves as Corsican, they would confirm the fact of being Italian, instead they are "exploited" by France. Having said that, it is only up to them to decide what to be, and I will certainly not be the one who wants to impose my ideas on this wonderful people, who I hope can achieve their objectives whatever they may be. South Tyrol is the northern part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region and has a German majority. In the past there have been separatist movements, including terrorist ones, but now it's all over and the majority of the population is no longer in favor of separation, also because with the status they have in Italy I think it is more economically convenient to stay there (it is a territory that has one of the best provincial autonomies in the world, and their culture is protected) . However, if one day they separate or join Austria, I wouldn't see anything wrong with it.

A little bit late answer to this as Corsican. Of course we are sharing many links with Italy, the language being just an old Tuscan dialect, the still strong catholicism but no one ever consider being Italian to be honest. I got your point and it wouldn't shocked me if Corsica belonged to Italy. But the struggle is more about the differences with France than the similarities with Italy. The idea is really either to become independent or geta real autonomous status as in Italy or Spain for example but staying in France. The french influence is too strong I think to just get rid of and go to another country like this, furthermore due to the fact that Italy didn't exist as a whole at the time of the French annexion of Corsica

Thank you for another great video featuring a few regions I’ve already visited, it brings back good memories and breathtaking views I enjoyed there. Commenting on the content, I think the so called Republic of Artsakh no longer exists, so it’s no longer possible that region may join Armenia in future. Switching to the beautiful island of Corsica, I don’t think we can say all Corsicans are French. They are of course French citizens and speak French, but my impression is they consider themselves as separate ethnic group. One thing I remember from my Corsica holiday is very few French flags were present in the public space, but Corsican colours were present everywhere. I don’t think there many people who would like Istria to join Italy, but there are two autonomous regions in Italy that in my opinion could have been included in this video. First - South Tirol (Trentino-Alto Adige in Italian, Südtirol in German) with a significant group of German native speakers. Second - Aosta Valley with two official languages, Italian and French. Another region that probably missing is Alsace, but I’m not aware if there are any people there who would prefer to be part of Germany instead of belonging to France. Finally, apart from Transylvania, Hungarian minorities exists in both Slovakia and Vojvodina, as both were under Hungarian rule up until the Treaty of Trianon in 1920.

As a spanish speaker, I can understand galician 100%, every single word, yet I can't do that with portuguese. Under your rules, Galician would be an inbetween in the iberian-romance dialectal continuum, while portuguese and castilian would not be different languages, but merely different dialects. Since it's a stupid thing to say, and one no one would want, I suggest we simply accept galician as its own distinct languages, and we drop the stupid linguistic ethnonationalism.

@@akai4942 you may be a spanish speaker, i am both a spanish speaker and a portuguese speaker, and also a linguist, so... :/ fallacies apart, there is an unbroken continuum from galicia to portugal linguistically speaking, southern galician and northern portuguese are identical, exactly the same, word by word. There are more linguistic differences between the spanish of cantabria and the spanish of cadiz than between galician and portuguese. If you claim galician and portuguese are different languages, that's fair, but then spanish is not one language either and should be broken up into different languages too. This is the same debate that happens with catalan-valencian, for some reason it is always the minority languages that are broken up into small tiny pockets, almost as if that was a previous step to then call them "regional" and "small" and "useless". People deny galician and portuguese are the same language because if they do admit that, then the argument "galician is a language only to be spoken to cows" often used becomes useless.

I went there (Bayern) for vacations and went to the Zugspitze and the neighbouring mountains, and realized that the bavarian's accent is pretty similar to the austrian one and they also share cultural similarities. At the mountain people say hi to each other and austrian and bayern people would say "servus", while any other german would say hallo/moin. I dont know if austria should join germany or bayern should join austria, but the latter sounds more fitting. Dont think it would happen anyway, but just curious and would like see a video about it?

That's true, Bayern (Bavaria) has more in common with Austria than with the rest of Germany. It has historical reasons. Btw. Bavaria is considered the "Texas of Germany" 😃 On the other hand, I wouldn't say other Germans dislike Bayern (maybe because of the politics.. their leader always wants to differ and disagree with everything that the rest of Germany wants). For sure, the language is different too and can be annoying if the Bavarian people refuse to speak "proper" German that you can actually understand, but I know many Germans who often go for holiday there and love it. To be honest, indeed the most beautiful part of Germany - I myself was there last year and the people are way more friendly and preserve their culture more than here in North-Germany for example. And yes, you don't really realise once you cross the border to Austria 😃 Maybe only the prices...

Is not closely related. The celtic substrate of romance language is the same in Spanish, Galician, Asturian and even Basque has some influence. Galician and Spanish share most of the words of celtic origin and both of then have just a testimonial amount of those celtic words. Also, some of those celtic origin words in Spanish and Galician come from the celtic substrate in French, Occitan or Italian, not particullary from autoctonous celtic words (there were lots of celtic languages in Spain, even within the different tribes they may have different languages). Is like saying Spanish or Galician are semitic languages or closely related with semitic or mixed with it because both languages have lots of loanwords from Arabic. There is no evidence on were the romanization ended, but Asturias and the north of Castille and Leon were conquered lately. Romanization was unstopable. The cultural connection is still strong and there are many similar communties in Norway today. Norway will not step on the UK's toes and demand the islands back, the UK is a too important trade partner and ally to risk over such an "unimportant" issue. Norfolk Island is _fully_ part of Australia, despite false claims by some of the Pitcairner-descended population that Queen Victoria "gave them" the island. It was an external territory of Britain from 1774, and by an Act of the British Parliament became an external territory of Australia in 1914. A limited form of self-governance was granted in 1979, but had to be repealed by the 2010s because of financial mismanagement. Norfolk Island has _always_ been subsidised by the Commonweath (in the range of tens of millions of AUD annually, at present). It can't _afford_ independence, and if NZ wants the burden, well, good luck to them... it would make up for all the dole bludgers they dumped on us.

9:30 I think 40% is a bit of a stretch ... 30 to 35% yes and mostly on the coast. Inland Istria was mostly Slavic for a long time also the percentages of Italian population today is 7 to 10 % ... although that's also a conundrum because a good part of them are Istriots which a re a romance people but their language developed separate from Italian even if Italians generally regard it as a dialect (Kinda like Rusyn is a recognized language but Ukrainians claim it's a Dialect of Ukrainian ) Lastly I believe the expulsion Yugoslav government commuted was targeting families that settled here after 1919 ... and yes a lot of people also fled and some were victims of mass shootings. Yugoslavia did manage to unite Istria with the rest of Croatia but I try not looking at it trough tinted glasses

Exactly! In my unbiased opinion, I think neither Hungary nor Romania can govern it without the other (Hungarians from Romania and vice versa) wanting to secede, the region is far too diverse. This would solve a lot of the existing tensions.

You really missed the timing of events in Azerbaijan. Artsakh is no more and will never be an Armenian populated region again. And rather than Nakhchivan being absorbed by Armenia, it is more likely that Azerbaijan will force a land corridor to stop it from being an exclave.
@AVV_Beats
@AVV_Beats 4 ай бұрын
True. At the time the Soviets took control of it, Nakhchivan had a 40% Armenian population, and a simple look at a map would dictate that it should have been made part of Armenia. The Soviets were real bastards for effectively laying inter-ethnic conflict time bombs.

The reality in NI RE a united ireland isn't black and white. Lots of people wrongly believe that most Catholics in NI want to be part of One Ireland so they get all excited when a census shows more Catholics than Protestants. Whereas you can safely say the vast majority of protestants don't want a united ireland, it's not true the other way round. They are as likely to remember the horrors of the Catholic Church in the republic as they are the troubles. Anyway the governance and institutions of NI aren't easily comparable with the Rep. Healthcare being one of them.

One azerbaijan man even bragging to me (Indonesian) about how good their military is to be able to defeat armenia and able to deffend their artzakh claim. Then this man started to mocking indonesia for losing east timor and 2 islands in northern borneo province I then decided to give him a reality check Firstly, indonesia lost all those 3 teritories from legal procedures through UN instead of ethnic cleansing, unlike what azerbaijan did Secondly, unlike azerbaijan who keep attacking weaker armenia again and again, indonesia have history of getting in war against multiple countries, all at once and come as the winner (dutch, ausie, nz, uk and gurkha forces) I also told him that, if he want to bragging about his country and at the same time looking down at my country, his country first atleast have to challenge iran militarily and come as the winner He turn silent

Except Indonesia didn't defeat the Dutch, UK, etc. militarily. It was successfully re-occupied after WW2, only to be granted independence after international pressure from the US and the UN. There is nothing "inevitable" about NI joining the Republic. Until recently (namely Brexit) support for unification had been declining for 10 years, and even at its height it was always a minority position (and still is, despite the right-wing Brexit madness in the UK). A large proportion of Catholics also did not want unification. And even if it did become a majority position you are going to be taking a significant minority of people who feel very strongly that they don't want unification. It's annoying to see blanket statements like "it is inevitable" for issues that are obviously very complex.
