Instead of 1x1 between the plastic totes. I think I would have used angle iron, would have given more of a lip to slide on. Just a thought
@built46254 жыл бұрын
Calimesacox good call. I think I actually mentioned that in a comment somewhere on here. If I would have bought the metal to make this project I would have used angle iron instead for sure. Look for a new rendition of this storage rack in the future
@olivertaylor47794 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing watching the video, this would also give it 'sides' so the boxes don't slide out sideways, it would probably be cheaper too if you were buying the metal just for this rack.
@calimesacox4 жыл бұрын
@@olivertaylor4779 I didn't even thenk about it going oy the side, buy your right. And he would have gained a lot of room. Would have got two more of the thin organizers. I am thinking about making one. Seen where a guy put in the middle a pull out tray. So he could set and open the box..
@olivertaylor47794 жыл бұрын
@@calimesacox The pull out tray is a great idea and it saves room on a bench, I would have a bar/tube in a l_l shape and this would go into tube on each side, 8mm rebar is nice n cheap for this and strong too.

That's a lot of tubing. Some components of that build could easily be cheaper angle iron and strap iron.
@CheetoTheCat4 жыл бұрын
The finished product looks super nice, and professionally done. The red looks awesome. I do have one question; why did you use square tube for the drawer supports? It seems like the square tube is using up a lot of vertical space and maybe using angle instead would have allowed you to fit more trays. Just asking. Other than that detail, I intend to totally copy this. I also love the fact that you used good quality trays. The Stanley trays are WAY better than HF's and worth the extra $$. Two thumbs up! Edit to add: I see a lot of other folks have said the same thing and I see your responses. Excellent project anyway.

Awesome rack. Do you think it would of been cheaper to use angle iron for the shelf sliders? Or do you think tubing is better to hold the boxes straight?
@built46256 жыл бұрын
Jason angle iron would have been a better choice for sure. I just had a ton of this 1x1" box tubing laying around so i used that. If i woukd have bought the materials, i would have used 2x2x 1/8" angle iron i think
@rrf4820125 жыл бұрын
I use those exact same totes for screws...etc. I was wondering how I was going to build my rack for mine. Very nice job and looks great. My only issue is that my rack will be built for installation into a 7'x16' trailer. I would have to make modifications to it for that kind of environment....:) I was wondering why you didn't use 1"x1" angle iron for the supports.....just curious is all. My unit will not be mobile within the trailer....screwed to the wall for sure. The other thing is that I did not even know that they made a smaller tote.....gonna look into that as well. Thanks for the great video.
@built46255 жыл бұрын
Russell Freer thanks for the love! I would have definitely used angle iron if I had it available at the time. I made this whole rack out of metal I had laying around that was left over from other projects. If I had to buy the materials I would for sure go with angle iron for the parts that the totes actually sit on.

That looked go, it was a finished project. The caps were a nice touch, the sortemo idea is a very valid project for a home shop, where space is always a premium. Mine uses a steel shelveing unit with extra shelves to hold 16 trays two on each shelve, the blue steel and plastic part holders are where I started but just to small. Never saw hockey pucks used that way. I use one as a pin block to punch out pins in firearms, and getting a big box means they are cheap unfortunately pucks are not available anywhere near me and I picked mine up in Vancouver coming back from Alaska. Imagine pucks not being available in the desert? Don't allow your shop to become other people's warehouse.

Nice Rack! Planning to do something similar this year with the harbor freight bins. Because well, I'm cheap, I already have some, and they've been holding up well enough for me. The part I want to know is where did you get that sick thread checker? I've got a couple from trade shows, but nothing that nice. - nevermind, saw it in the description! BTW prep, prime, and paint is my least favorite part too.

Terry Pullen haha I’m sure they look fine. I know how you feel though. I always see better ways to make projects after I finish them. Like for example, I would have used L- angles instead of box tubing for the drawer slides if I had to do it again. I probably would have been able to fit a good deal more totes with all the extra space.

@@built4625 I caught Harbor Freight having a sale on the thinner boxes so I purchased 8 (they had a limit of 9 but I was thinking even numbers in case I wanted to do side by side. I also bought 2 of the thicker cases and 4 of the half width cases and they also had some odd shaped cases (18.5"Lx6.75"Wx3.5H) I bough 4 of those. So my question is when I left the store I was kicking myself thinking I had bought to many of the "thin" boxes (16.5"Wx13Dx2.25"D) and needed more of the "thick" (16.5"Wx13Dx4.5"D). BUT once I got them back to the garage and began the sorting in the round(picture me as Def Leppard and the sorting boxes as the audience) I discovered I really did not like the "thick" very much because the bins are too large too deep and too few, yes I had a few items that they were ideal for but it was only a few. I dig the "frame" method of building the rack, but I am not capable of welding at this time so I'm going with wood. I watched this video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnWzl6lujbCmprM )after yours which also used welded tube frame but he also used wood panels. Obviously his wood panels were for aesthetics, but if the frame were made of wood as mine will be the wood panels become integral structure. Thanks for the inspiration and happy new year
@SeanRWisner5 жыл бұрын
I should have said I mention this because: 1) you mentioned getting more cases in by using angle 2) I notice you have a lot of the thick cases Perhaps your storage needs are vastly different then mine (and they may be) but that seems like an awful lot of those thick cases to me
