One of the worst things that happened with Lucha Underground (aside from their grossly unfair contract situation) was when they took a huge, months long hiatus in the middle of season 3 that just killed whatever momentum they'd built up. Then a bunch of people left in Season 4, although at least some of them filmed stuff to resolve their stories. The end of Prince Puma, with him walking away shamed and defeated, was particularly unexpectedly sad. That, plus the negative stuff about wrestlers suing to get out of their contracts, and the suits constantly wanting to slash the budget, all combined to just completely handcuff the show creatively and kill it. The revelation of the shadowy cabal of criminal and supernatural forces manipulating events behind the scenes with Stu Bennett as Mr. Big was promising, but ending Season 4 with Jake Strong (Jake Hager/Jack Swagger) as champion and possessing the Gauntlet Of The Gods probably didn't help. I know some of those characters are running around MLW under altered names in something called Azteca Underground, but that show is just completely off my radar. Can anybody tell me, is it good? The Azteca stuff, specifically. I don't know if I could get used to referring to Dario Cueto as Cesar Duran.
@GrownUpKid942 жыл бұрын
Azteca is ok. It’s not cinematic but Dario is basically going by an alias. There’s a lot of references to “a fight club in Boyle heights”. He’s kind of the head of MLW tho so it works well.

I loved the feel about an underground wrestling show. The setting was great, and Dario was perfect as an authority figure, like a hispanic Vince. I think the super natural stuff kinda kills it for me personally. The matches and some of the cinematic promos in the back were great. It falls apart to me in season 3 with the push of Sexy Star. I was baffled that they had a lot of great talent, and they decided to push her. She wasn't bad, but damn kinda killed it big time.

Defenders of this stance often will say it is respecting Lucha Libre traditions in which many masked luchadors don't mix their personal lives with their wrestling lives, and under Quack's philosophy this is why you shouldn't ask or care. The opposite opinion states that, while it is often true that many luchadors don't give their real names unless they lose a lucha de apuestas match, most of the time when they change their name or gimmick moving to a new promotion that is information they rarely conceal. I have a friend who works in finance. The day after the Raw with the limo explosion, at around lunch time, he gave me a call and said "Did something happen on Raw last night?" I told him how the story went down and he just went "Oh, that explains it." Apparently WWE stock had started to go way down, because plenty of people invest in the company without following wrestling or knowing much about it. At the time it was a decent investment, so why not? So, those sort of people heard "Mr. McMahon was killed" and thought it meant the real Vince McMahon rather then the Mr. McMahon character and they ditched their stock assuming the company was going to collapse. WWE ended up having to issue a statement to financial outlets to clarify that this was a storyline.

Kayfabe, Bearer had too much control over The Undertaker, being the only man to have influence enough to be able to force Taker to do things through the "Magic Urn" phylactery AND to have enough social influence over Taker based on their history to also influence Taker's actions without the urn. Taker saw a moment to get rid of that influence, who frequently interfered with what he wanted to do and took away autonomy, by seizing the opportunity to remove that threat of control and loss of autonomy. Other wrestlers have used the urn to exert some control over Taker since, but it is usually fleeting and more of a Monkey's Paw situation that quickly backfires, not the complete surrendered obedience Bearer exerted on Taker. It might have been handled better, I don't recall how effective the storytelling was at conveying all this information, at the time (and in the run up to the swerve) - I'm pretty sure it was not great. But in the commentary and promos and references to that moment, it was Kayfabed as the reason.
@todd19282 жыл бұрын
@@Samael1113 I understand that was the reason but Undertaker and Bearer had returned as faces only three months before hand at WrestleMania. Bearer wasn't manipulating him to do anything. It's just really weird to end a show with one of your biggest faces in the company killing their father figure/manager when he could have just sent him home. Just....just weird.
@Samael11132 жыл бұрын
@@todd1928 Yeah, that's on creative and how they wanted to tell the story and write Bearer off the show. WWE Creative has rarely been...amazing or, perhaps more importantly, consistent - Particularly with long-form story-telling. They definitely prefer 3-6 month cycles. But honestly, Taker IMO, rarely worked well as a pure Face (Gods I hated American Badass Taker so much). He was a Force of Nature at his best. And a very good heel when needed. Maybe Creative realized that and just took the opportunity to force the change back early, however lazy it was, when they had a few months to set it up and could have told a story that made more sense for Undertaker to make that decision. Or at least gave a few story beats in the 2 weeks before the PPV and after the match, before the lever pull, to remind everyone of Bearer's influence, and Taker's forced subservience, so the cement bath made more sense. IDK. But that was the kayfabe reason for Bearer's kayfabe death at the time, which was the question asked. And it makes sense for the overarching character and story even if the micro story and role at the time was in conflict with how it played out /shrug
